You know, we may not believe we have much power on our own. I may be a total Pollyanna complete with rose colored glasses but I think we can start to bring awareness.

We need to start asking at our own local levels - what happened? What can we do to level the playing field here? How can we help if/when the next wave comes in? (This is rhetorical).

The thing is these care homes thought they were doing the best thing by closing down to visitors and such. It's all went very wrong. We all know that.

But we need to keep asking. We need to keep caring.

For every voice that wants to devalue our marginalized citizens - homeless, elderly - another 100 voices need to rise up and drown them out.

Jmo
One thing I would like to know is why are the various countries following these procedures? Eg. Closing schools, banning visitors to care homes and stopping kids seeing over 70's etc. Who came up with this plan first? Was it China or Italy? Or WHO? And with Sweden choosing the herd immunity course, was that a completely independent choice or was this a recommended WHO strategy or what exactly? I was not on the thread until March so may have missed if this was explained or discussed previously.

The maintenance worker from our local nursing home spoke to my husband last week about possible ways to protect their residents. They'll be coming in for a meeting next week so he can demonstrate special UV lights and a peroxide filter system for the air handlers in their HVAC system.

Orangutans among thousands of animals at risk of starvation in Indonesian zoos under coronavirus lockdown, officials warn

Some 70,000 animals across Indonesia are at risk of starvation as zoos struggle financially due to social distancing restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A survey released by the Indonesian Zoo Association concluded that 92 per cent of its member zoos on the islands of Java, Bali, Sumatra, Lombok and Borneo had only enough supplies to feed their animals until mid-May.

Some 60 animal parks across the archipelago attract around 50 million visitors each year but, with most of them closed since mid-March, the body warned that thousands of animals are at risk, including endangered Sumatran tigers and Bornean orangutans.
...

"Not all zoos receive money from the government. Some are privately owned and rely on the revenue from ticket sales," said Indonesian Zoo Association spokesman Sulhan Syafi'i, as quoted by the Jakarta Post.

Do you know whether Oregon paid for them?
Don't know if it was state funds. Oregonians pay taxes. So do I, and I don't begrudge them a dime of federal funding. So sure, Oregon paid...so did NY...so did CA...so did MS...so did AK...and AR...and so did all the 50 nifty plus the District of Columbia. JMO :)

And now up to 81 positives  at the Walmart
Coronavirus cases among Worcester Walmart employees reach 81; A total of 391 employees have been tested
Dr. Eric Dickson, the CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care, said the testing at Walmart is a great opportunity to examine the prevalence of disease within a group. It’s also a chance to test asymptomatic people, something that has not typically been possible.

I haven’t caught up today and don’t know if I will. I’d like your advice, though, please.

My mom has been isolated, has not left the house once, since March 9th. She misses my dog and chickens. I live in the country. She’s thinking about coming out here tomorrow to spend time outside with the dog and chickens. I figured I would Clorox wipe and unlock the gates, set up clean chairs, and she could just come on in the yard alone, do her thing, have her spirits raised.

I think it’s low to no risk. But if there are risks I’m not considering, I’m pretty sure one of you will see them and point them out. And that’s what I need - for anyone who thinks this is a bad idea to tell me so, and why so I can make the best choice.

Thanks in advance, y’all.

I think it's a wonderful idea. Your doing it safely. You both could visit outside and 6 ft. apart. Enjoy your visit.

I think that your Mom needs to be with you. And you should give her a hug, and enjoy the day.

I have visited my daughter twice since this Pandemic started. She lives in an area with much higher rate of Coronavirus than where I live. And I see her, hug her, and we spend time together. It is important.

Awesome. Have a wonderful time at least 6 feet apart. Can she pack a lunch and drink? You could have a little picnic if you each prepared your own food and drinks.

You're a better, more generous person than I am. I don't like wasteful gov't spending. That said, it appears that Oregon just happened to buy the temporary hospital a couple of years ago. Which begs a whole 'nother set of questions. lol
_______
The Oregon Medical Station, a temporary hospital used in a medical crisis, was bought by the state a few years ago. It will be used to treat patients with COVID-19.

I've been visiting that way with my elderly parents and it has worked well - we set up chairs about 10-15 feet away (no hugging) and sit outside. I'd suggest you consider using face masks as they seem to be increasingly recommended. And of course take precautions with the way she will travel to see you. Have a nice visit!

Daily border crossings into Denmark are much higher. Norway and Sweden share a nearly unused border with Finland yes. Have you looked at maps that show population density? No one is worried about CoVid in the far north of either Sweden or Norway and virtually no one comes or goes into Norway or Sweden from Finland.

Neither Norway nor Sweden has many or any cases in those latitudes and near the border of Finland (which itself has very limited movement across its borders expect transit through airports by Aeroflot and a few others). Take a look at the map below - look where the population in Sweden actually lives.

That's why I also included St Petersburg in the discussion. Finland hooks up to Russia and Russia only. Russia does not have open borders into Europe and many geographers would not call Russia "Europe" (and Russians themselves would agree - they like the term Eurasia for their continental situation).

Europe is a cultural construct, not a geographical one. Unlike all the other continental designation, there are no firm geological boundaries to Europe and Asia. And Finland is closed off from the rest of Europe (if it's Europe and not Eurasia) by Russia and always will be. Finns also do not speak an Indo-European language - and do not consider themselves "European" by that standard.

Population density map of Sweden : europe

As you can probably guess, the deaths are mostly occurring in the red areas.

Interestingly, Finland is the least densely populated nation in Europe and so far only about 210 deaths there (no where near its border with Norway).

What I was trying to refer to is that trucks, trains, etc go from the rest of Europe (which has been hit very hard by this pandemic) to Denmark, so we'd expect (and do find) more cases than in Norway. Having water between the major CoVid pumps and one's own land is helpful. So Sweden thought it would have a different course.

It did not. So, since we've now established that there's no high CoVid rate in Northern Sweden - again, the question, is why is it so much higher?

They didn't shut schools, businesses or have any travel restrictions. We await antibody testing for their population, but I'm guessing we'll find that cryptic transmission occurred all over the place and that as many as 40% of Swedes will test positive for CoVid Ab by August. Including the children.
