Why can't the teachers wear the masks? Their doesn't seem to be much evidence kids are a risk to each other. But I could have missed that evidence.
The main function of the kind of mask the public wears is to prevent passing our germs on to others. So mask-wearers are still at risk around those who are not wearing masks. I mean, it helps to be wearing a mask, but the real benefit happens when all are wearing them in an enclosed space.

ETA - the teachers and staff would not be protected then.

Suns out!! Feeing much better and special thanks to @CSIDreamer , @zecats (so glad you shared), @The Night Watchman and @Lady L. Listened and took advice, doggo will be welcomed (because he’s an adorable foxdingo lol) all the places :)

This whole situation is hitting me like the grief I experienced after son passed suddenly a few years ago. In waves. I probably need more breaks from the bad news articles and learn not to be so depressed, angry and cranky on those days.

Anyway thank you all for being here and engaging in rational discussion and up to the minute news. You give me hope for the future.

I am trying to figure out people who have parents, spouses, in Long Term Care facilities. They have not been able to visit their family since mid March.

Is this "lock down" just going to go on forever?
Until good vaccine is available, I suppose. Because the number of infections aren't going down in most states, and are going up in some states. Yet some people seem to think it's all over because lockdowns are being lifted.

I am sure where kids do go back to school it will be acceptable to keep your children off if you have doubts. That is what they have said in the UK, because you would get fined and could go to court normally.
Exactly. Each to their own. Thankfully, my government (USA) cannot force me to send my child to an institutional setting for school (public or private). Until more is known I have chosen to follow the CDC guidelines, irrespective of what the government says.

For universities in Ohio, faculty and staff have to wear masks once the universities open in August for the fall semester. But so far, there is no requirement for students to wear a mask, even though it is highly recommended. Universities are looking into enforcement issues regarding requirements for students to wear a mask. How could they enforce this, etc. Still to be determined.

More research on masks:

"In countries with cultural norms or government policies supporting public mask-wearing, per-capita coronavirus mortality increased on average by just 5.4% each week, as compared with 48% each week in remaining countries. In the multivariable analysis, lockdowns tended to be associated with less mortality (p=0.31), and per-capita testing with higher reported mortality (p=0.26), though neither association was statistically significant. Conclusions. Societal norms and government policies supporting the wearing of masks by the public are independently associated with less mortality from COVID-19."

Well, the private ones can enforce anything they want. But really, if public universities can enforce rules like students must be wearing shirts, then I don’t see why they can’t require masks,

Nurse Shares COVID-19 Before-and-After Photos to Prove It's Not Just the 'Sick and Elderly' at Risk

He shared before-and-after photos to illustrate just how serious COVID-19 can be. The photo on the left was taken about a month before he was hospitalized, and the one on the right in a recovery ward. He told BuzzFeed just standing up to take the photo took a lot of effort.

I wanted to show everyone how badly being sedated for 6 weeks on a ventilator or intubated can be. Amongst other things, covid19 reduced my lung capacity with pneumonia. — Mike Schultz

I have been very confused lately. I had to go have a second COVID test which also turned out Neg. (Symptoms: headache, metallic taste in mouth, no appetite, abdominal pain, extreme fatigue/malaise)
About 5 days after the test, I had bad pain in my left calf, swelling, hardened vein, and feeling like there was a knot in it, also purplish discoloration around the spot. Pain got really bad so went to ER, where they did an ultrasound. It showed no large vein clots or DVT, but Dr. said "I bet you had COVID", you have a small blood clot and "thrombophlebitis" in leg and this is COVID-related.

Talked to nurse at my primary care Dr's offc today, she said radiology notes from ER showed no blood clots (which is technically true--they were looking for large vein clots) yet they want me to isolate AGAIN even after 2 Neg COVID tests. I am so very confused. Any advice from others who've had clots, are medical people, or just have some input? I'll see my dr. virtually tomorrow and don't even know where to begin. I am really frustrated and angry.

Hospital workers have been wearing masks for hours for decades? Surgical teams wear masks for an hour or two during surgery or MEs during an autopsy. Doctors and nurses wear them when treating an infectious patient. Except for now, medical personnel have never worn them for 6 hours a day, everyday.

From your link under the heading of BOTTOM LINE:

''Keep in mind, you shouldn't be wearing these for prolonged periods anyways''

I absolutely agree, children should be wearing them now when out in public for a couple of hours. I'm pleased to see that happening a lot in my city. I see a children with masks accompanied by a parents with a masks and I also see parents with no masks but their children have them on.

But IMO, children with developing brains, should not be wearing them for 6 hrs a day, 5 days a week.

Many surgeries last way longer than "an hour or two." If one has a tumor, it can easily be a 6 hour surgery, brain surgeries can go longer Sometimes physicians work in shifts, but it's not due to mask wearing. Patients, too, have been asked to wear them 12 hours a day (in infectious disease wards), except for eating. Here's a study where they developed a method for measuring viral load in a tuberculosis ward:

https://www.atsjournals.org/doi/full/10.1164/rccm.201107-1190oc

Masks were not completely effective, of course, but did provide some protection to staff.

I really don't think kids are going back to school for 6-7 hours a day in the fall - or even next spring. It'll be half that, so that there can also be social distancing. With a little supervision, younger kids without underlying conditions should be fine without masks when they are outdoors.

You definitely need days away. We all do. That's just normal. And so very sorry about your son. That's a tough one. No wonder you're extra sad.

I find breathing exercises help me a lot. I have some meditation apps on my phone that also include breathing for stress, for sleep, for extra energy. Some of my favs are HeadSpace, Oak, Insight Timer and Relax Melodies. I do follow some meditation on them as well and they all have free content (and more if you want to pay).

Hope you don't think me pushy. I don't mean to intrude and tell you what to do. I just know what works for me and like to share advice with everyone and anyone. (Married to a psychologist as well so I'm used to receiving advice too.)

Stay well ...and smile. It triggers lots of health benefits. :)

"HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. -- A church in Mississippi was destroyed by a suspected arson fire, about a month after its pastor filed a lawsuit challenging the city of Holly Springs on gathering restrictions amid the coronavirus outbreak.

First Pentecostal Church in Holly Springs, Mississippi, burned down Wednesday morning, news outlets reported. When investigators from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office got to the scene, they found graffiti in the church parking lot that read: “Bet you stay home now you hypokrites.”

I was talking TYPICAL----not exceptions that are true with anything.
The typical time it takes for a surgical procedure is 1-2 hours. Naturally, depending on the surgery, it can take longer. Are you telling me neurosurgeons perform 6 hour surgeries every day, Monday through Friday---and that's typical? Surgeons do not stand there and perform routine surgeries on patients, one after the other, for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. Or even one surgery a day that takes 6 hours, and do that 5 days a week. The surgical team members also do not stand there for 6 hours straight assisting, with their masks on, five days a week.
If people have no problem with their kids wearing masks at school for 6 hours a day, five days a week, because they think it's not harmful to a child, then each to their own.
ETA----Your comparison to patients who are infectious makes no sense, unless you're claiming patients with an infectious disease usually stay in the hospital for 9 months--- a typical school year.

Did they advise/prescribe any medications like aspirin or warfarin? I am not a medical person but aspirin has been prescribed for some COVID symptoms. Can you call your doctor today?

Taking daily aspirin to prevent blood clots in case you get coronavirus is dangerous idea, doctors say

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article242833706.html?

This is really disturbing, about the "Covid-19" effects on children.

And merits more discussion in regards to school starting back up, especially for children who are medically fragile. Especially in regards to schools being held liable for children getting the disease at school.

This also has ramifications for teachers. If a teacher comes down with Coronavirus, would that teacher be eligible for workers comp benefits? Presumption that the teacher was exposed at work.
