@margarita25 my friend has been having problems with her sons wearing masks. She asked me what could be a good incentive for this behavior. I asked her, if her husband wears a mask. The answer, was a slow..."no".

Well, then forget about getting the kids to wear one, if their own Father won't wear one.

I'm in Dallas where things are growing worse each day. Actually the entire state's numbers are headed in the wrong direction. I've followed this subject since the threads were started and because of that I was able to prepare before we were officially shut down. My questions is what are you all doing to prepare from this point? Are you looking at your preparations differently than you did in March? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Well. I live in a place that did really well at first. Now, we have faster rates than projected.

ANYWAY. I'm staying home. My vigilance is way way more than in mid-April, because my community already has so many more cases active than at any time before.

I estimate that 1 in 1000 people in my city has active CV virus. I may be too optimistic. But that's way plenty for it to be 1 in 500 in three days. I do not want to be one of those, not yet. I have a gene (I hate to mention it because not everyone wants to know) that is associated with greater seriousness of CV-19.

OTOH, I have a blood type that is protective. But living this way (weighing decisions against some life or death scale) is not what I signed on for. I am quite bummed.

I think I likely saw Covid literally being transmitted before my eyes the other day.

It seemed a friend had come to visit the college aged girl across the street. They sat down in the yard very close to together, face to face, I’d say about a foot or two from each other, if that.

They weren’t wearing masks. Well, one started coughing uncontrollably for what seemed like five minutes straight. The other girl just sat there but finally got up and walked away. I actually stood up, cleared my throat loudly and gave them the glare from hell. I was just about to say something along the lines of “Nice, no mask and coughing in her face...you both are probably going to need a Covid test”, but they quickly went inside after they saw my glare.

I can’t handle selfish society right now. I’d rather stay in my bubble because I know myself and I have NO FILTER and will GO OFF. I have little self control when it comes to things like this.

Is it my business? Damn right it is. This virus should be “everyone’s business”, as Doc T says.

I realize that incident was private property, but if they’re not wearing masks or practicing social distancing, and one has no problem coughing in one’s face for 5 minutes straight without getting up, while the other just sits there, this is an indication of how they may conduct themselves out in public, and how seriously they take this virus, IMO.

Well in my family, I am the only one taking this virus seriously and it is frustrating. My 80 year old MIL is having yard sales, going to thrift stores, farmers markets. I can understand farmers markets but yard sales and thrift stores!!!! She is a bargain hunter and extremely active on Ebay. Here I am hiding out at home only venturing out once a week to get groceries and I am terrified. My spouse thinks I am insane and has no mercy. I am terrified.

Not sure about the 6% but this link mentions 20.4%. Agriculture and fishing is even larger than that.

Quick Facts & Figures

It's including internal tourism and internal trade, as far as I can tell.

My advice to any nation would be to continue to make up the (small)percentage of foreign trade or tourism if they can. By eschewing things they really don't need from another island or continent, and living as far as possible with what they, themselves, produce.

You're including what NZers themselves consume. Think about it. It's not about exports. It's now about having enough at home.

Many more NZers than UKers or USAers are proportionately involved in occupations that give basic sustenance to their own place, in a time of world crisis.

For UK and USA, the loss of tourism and exports of certain items is much more damaging.

That’s awesome. I would feel much more confident in a restaurant run by someone like your husband!

I think businesses like yours should be able to get government funding for supplies and equipment used to contend with COVID. It’s hard for people to be able to afford all of that with the closures we’ve had.

Is business getting better?

ITA. If only government could act quickly and specifically enough.

Thank you....yes BC is pretty...I was born and raised here....and we have felt blessed to have a pretty view to look at during our isolation......but Ontario is lovely too And interesting. Ive spent a bit of time there on business trips,,,in Kingston, Cornwall and Ottawa. I’ve never seen Toronto though. I also have spent some bits of time in Montreal....but not Quebec City. So here’s to getting through all this and taking a cross country vacation.

Yes. I think our saving grace is a large garden patio we built. It has a rock waterfall and Koi pond (now filled with large goldfish, as heavy rains a while back flushed out and killed the Koi) and a large lion head water Fountain).
It's very green and lush. We did tons of wedding rehearsals, business parties and other gatherings because it's great for photos.
All catering though has come to a screeching halt.
That definitely is hurting us.
We want to sell the restaurant. We are done with California.
Interviewing a broker now. Hopefully, our patio will be an attraction fof a buyer.

A revolt against wearing masks creates a new coronavirus danger as California reopens

A revolt against wearing masks creates a new coronavirus danger as California reopens

“But a mask rebellion is underway in some parts of the state, with residents pushing back on mandatory face-covering rules even with coronavirus cases on the rise and as more businesses open their doors and some people yearn to return to old routines.

The potency of mask politics became clear this week in Orange County, where the health officer resigned after weeks of attacks — and a death threat — over her mandatory mask rules. Her replacement on Thursday rescinded the rules amid intense pressure from the Board of Supervisors.“

Nice. (NOT)

Sigh.

If you don’t want to wear a mask, stay home!! JMO

—-

Also from the above link:

“Other counties have also buckled to public pressure. Fresno County had a face mask rule for less than a day before it was pulled back. Riverside and San Bernardinopulled their orders after blowback. Stockton’s mayor, Michael Tubbs, proposed face covering rules but failed to get any support from the City Council this week.”

[...]

“Health experts expressed alarm at Orange County’s actions and the large rebellion about masks, saying it will make it harder to prevent new outbreaks of coronavirus.

“It’s the only way we get back to work — it’s to mask,” said Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, UC San Francisco chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. “All of the data tells us ... it’s pretty clear that masking is the element that changes the trajectories of the COVID pandemic.”“

China reports 57 new virus cases, highest daily count since April

...
China reported 57 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, the highest daily figure since April, as concerns grow about a resurgence of the disease.

The domestic outbreak in China had been brought largely under control through strict lockdowns that were imposed early this year -- but a new outbreak has been linked to a meat and vegetable market in south Beijing.

The National Health Commission (NHC) said 36 of the new cases were domestic infections in the capital.
...
The new cluster of domestic infections has prompted fresh lockdowns with people ordered to stay home in 11 residential estates near to the market.

Worries have also grown about the safety of the food supply chain, with some other markets in the city also closed.

State-run media had reported that the virus was detected on chopping boards used to handle imported salmon, and that major supermarket chains had removed stocks of salmon.
Beijing's market supervision authorities ordered a city-wide food safety inspection focusing on fresh and frozen meat, poultry and fish in supermarkets, warehouses and catering services.

Up to 25,000 hospital patients sent to care homes untested at peak of outbreak

Up to 25,000 hospital patients sent to care homes untested at peak of outbreak

Patrick Daly & Jeremy Culley
...
The government has been accused of treating care homes as an "afterhought" after a report found up to 25,000 hospital patients were discharged at the peak of the coronavirus outbreak without being tested.

The damning report from the National Audit Office also revealed that the government ignored warnings to stockpile gowns and visors as part of PPE supplies.

Boris Johnson is now facing renewed questions over care homes after the findings of Whitehall's spending watchdog on Friday.
...
"It is not known how many had Covid-19 at the point of discharge," said the report.
...
The advice was changed on April 15 but the NAO noted that, as of May 17, one in three care homes had declared a coronavirus outbreak, with more than 1,000 homes dealing with positive cases during the peak of infections in April.

Despite virus surge, Arizona governor won’t require masks

“.... a truck driver in Phoenix, wears a mask as required for work but otherwise he goes about mask-free.

“I’m not worried about it,” Fowler said while waiting for a table Thursday at Snooze A.M. Eatery, where the patio was full and only employees were seen donning face masks.

Despite COVID-19 case numbers trending upward, Fowler has no plans to change.

“Everybody’s going to get COVID one way or the other eventually,” he said. “People are gonna do what they want to do regardless.””

Houston weighs another lockdown as coronavirus cases surge

In the video here, it states that Trump plans to do a rally in Jacksonville, FL in an indoor area with up to 15,000 people.

Covid will be the great leveller. Darwinism at it's best. Survival of the smartest, who stay at home, wear masks, and do not get exposed to 15,000 people at a time, all yelling, in a huge air conditioned box. Swirling the air particles all around for a few hours to be inhaled and exhaled, over and over.

It would be an amazing "Contact Tracing". I wonder how many people in attendance will be wearing masks?

It is evident that there are some of us here who DO care about this virus and are still committed to being a part of helping stop the spread. I do take some comfort in that, so thank you. At least we can convene here together with like minds and share our frustrations, and feel like we are not alone with our concerns about others not taking it seriously.
