“Top public health officials in Donald Trump’s coronavirus taskforce warned the US president about holding a mass public rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this weekend because of the health risks of the coronavirus, it has been reported.

NBC News said that both Dr Anthony Fauci, America’s top infectious disease expert, and the taskforce’s response coordinator, Dr Deborah Birx, had raised concerns about the wisdom of such a large event in the middle of a pandemic that remains undefeated.

The TV network reported the two experts had “both vocalized concerns internally” in the past week – but to no avail.“

Coronavirus taskforce officials advised against Trump's Tulsa rally – report

—-

“The state Supreme Court on Friday denied a request to require a Tulsa judge order BOK Center management follow COVID-19 “mandatory social distancing guidelines” during President Donald Trump’s campaign rally this weekend.“

[...]

“Tulsa Health Department Executive Director Bruce Dart has said he wants the Trump rally to be postponed since the city is in the midst of a major resurgence in new COVID-19 cases.

Two attorneys representing the parties filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Tulsa District Court, claiming the rally amounted to a “super spreader event,” of COVID-19 cases unless masks were required and other social distancing measures implemented.“

[...]

““The only winner today is the virus. The virus won. Our lawsuit didn’t fail. Our elected officials failed us. With COVID-19 cases skyrocketing in our beloved City, nobody stood up for the health of our community, except for our courageous plaintiffs. Their courage will be long remembered," said plaintiffs' attorney Paul DeMuro in a statement.

"Prayer is our only recourse," he said.”

Sunlight in summer and hump seasons deactivates CoVid virions quickly.

Study simulated summer at middle latitudes, but also winter, fall and spring. At the sunniest times, the virions were deactivated in 6 minutes. With no sun at all and spraying the same amount of aerosolized virions into the experiment...they lasted 2 hours.

This is very helpful to those of us who want to disinfect various items and is finally an actual study of the mechanism by which outdoor daytime events are so much safer than indoor ones.

I walk thru a cloud of Lysol in my front hall, I'm on my 10th and last bottle and very upset about it , I also strip and put clothes in dryer on anti bacterial setting .

Be careful about breathing all that Lysol in. At least let the cloud clear a bit before you walk through it... :) moo

Worth consideration ...

My area reopened today and I am sad to have no intentions of going out to a bar or restaurant anytime soon. And here is my reason:

The COVID-19 is transmitted via respiratory droplets. We exhale about 100,000 microscopic droplets per minute.

In my many years of healthcare experience, I've known that patients with airborne transmitted infections were admitted to negative pressure respiratory isolation rooms. Upon entry, we gowned, gloved and put on a mask. And upon exit, those items were disposed of at the door.

All of that said, it's unlikely these establishments will resist the temptation of earning a larger profit and abide by strict social distancing practice, and adequately sanitize the area between patrons. And, I don't even want to think about the possibility of infectious droplets making their way through HVAC systems.

Sources:
Negative pressure room
Droplets in exhaled breath

I would love to go out to eat, but my knowledge and my gut is telling me that it is too much of a risk. So I am open to any information that points to the contrary.

eta: oops grammar

I agree
And in addition I think there is a lack of understanding among the general public about transmission characteristics and a lack of embracing the concepts of civic duty, and for the greater good
My view/opinion/experience

My final appeal.

If anybody reads this, it’s not too late to change your mind. You still have time to alter the course of the future. Ask yourself if it’s really worth it, to never see your grandkids again, or infect and kill someone else. Or be hooked up to a ventilator gasping to breathe. Or suffering any other terrible affliction that this disease can cause. You just don’t know how it will affect you. You could be asymptomatic, or only suffer mild symptoms, or you could be in for the fight for your life.

How risky is it to attend a Trump campaign rally during a pandemic? - CNN

End of useless appeal, but at least I did my best, once AGAIN, to help warn people.

OK, you convinced me not to go. Does it count if I wasn't going to begin with?

I have a solution to the rally. Lock them all in for weeks until all test negative.

I feel bad for the middle part of the nation if this becomes a super-spreader event. Nationwide, of people tested, just under 10% had/have CoVid-19. In many places, like Oklahoma, it's mostly people with symptoms who are getting tested (whereas in some places, workers are being asked to get tested by their workplaces, even though asymptomatic).

When the virus first gets lift-off (R0 rate above 1.0), it's dramatic and scary for the people who haven't had that happen in their area, yet. In Oklahoma, only about 5% of people tested are positive. That's really good. But it's projected to climb. IOW, right now, a much higher percent of people being tested in OK are positive. That's because people are worried, symptoms are real, CoVid is real, and people are hurrying to get tested.

The graph here is small, but it still tells the story in OK - where CoVid just went exponential after them holding it at bay since March:

Coronavirus in the U.S.: Latest Map and Case Count

COVID-19 | Oklahoma State Department of Health | (better graph)

That's why their public health people and the Mayor of Tulsa are begging the conventioneers not to do it.

Can you imagine the anxious state that the health care workers must be in? They will be expected to risk their lives for those who don't give a twit about them.

BRAVO. BRAVO,

In the words of my BFF is a respiratory therapist who has been on the front lines since the very beginning (and held people’s hands and said a prayer with them as they pass away), “Thanks Guys”.

True story. Yesterday a Nissan Versa all but parked in the cart corral lol. Pulled up as far as they could, blocked the corral, and went shopping.
Because they 'knew' that no one returns carts to the corral!

Yes, I am sorta kinda kidding.

Sorry for the OT post, you and margarita25 provided some much needed levity during this stressful day. Thank you!

So I assume in order to get into this rally it's first come first serve? Due to the fact folks are camping out for days? The fact that they are camping out for days is a major concern itself. Virus could be circulating even before these folks get inside. Asshats!

Yes, I read it is first come first serve.

(“You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave“....)

I’m looking at some projections re: the rally already starting to come out based on R Naught, etc. As we know these are just models, but very scary. I’ll post them later. I have a friend coming over and we’re going to sit in a field with masks on woot woot.

Dryers have antibacterial setting? Can't think of a better dryer to have then. Learn something new every day!

My final appeal.

Ok, in February I advised anyone who was heading to Mardi Gras in N’awlins or Carnival in Brazil to turn back around if you were already enroute (seriously, I did). We saw how BADLY those two events turned out. People DIED.

I had several things/places on my list for this year, MG was one of them.
I bailed on MG pretty early lol.
That list is in the trash.

THIS !!!
I have spent my entire career in healthcare, no longer clinical but now on the business side of things. Everytime someone begins with "their right" to be careless - I think of not only their friends and family they are putting at risk, but the doctors and nurses and resp therapists and all others that will have to take care of them.
Most clinicians choose healthcare because they genuinely have a desire to help others. The general public often dismisses that fact to the job security and money they make. I can tell you that clinicians encounter the most vile, nastiest situations you can imagine and no amount of money makes that worthwhile. It's the desire to help your fellow human being that keeps you going.
So when this first full blown pandemic of our lifetime becomes a reality and the healthcare professionals find themselves at risk and taking that risk home to their families and loved ones - I wonder how many doctors and nurses and others we'll lose before this is over. Not only in death - but those that have reached their breaking point in dedicating their lives when all these selfish, arrogant, Covidiots unnecessarily put them in harm's way.
