And what's going to happen is that folks won't see immediate results, as cases will likely continue to rise over the next three weeks while current infections become apparent. So they'll assume that masks aren't helpful and will start protesting, or stop wearing them, or Abbott will rescind the order. jmo

This is worrisome. He's 74 years old and a survivor of stage 4 colon cancer. It's a shame people didn't mask up and social distance at the rally to protect him and other vulnerable people in attendance. I hope he recovers.

It's really sad when you victimize people, especially the elderly, who are infected with COVID-19. And especially sad when people do so because of their politics. Did we say that Trudeau's wife took away treatment from essential workers, or Boris Johnson? Or the protesters? And if someone on here or their spouse gets infected because they take the risk to get their hair cut, or play golf, or have a backyard get together with their family, or other event that some deem as "non-essential", will we have the same victim blaming for them as well?

Prayers for Herman Cain and his family, hope to see him back on the trail soon.

One of the things that I liked about this blog post is that the blogger feels that the things one does for one's personal safety and one's public duty align 100% at this time. To stay safe, wash your hands, wear masks, and keep your distance. Stay home as much as your circumstances allow. Herman Cain, despite his publically known high-risk status, chose to do something very risky that was not essential. Now he is in a hospital, taking up resources that could have been used for an essential worker like a firefighter, health care worker, or grocery store associate.

Is he actually in a hospital? I thought it just said he tested positive. Also, if healthcare is private, do CV patients pay for their treatment? How do you deny treatment if the patient is a paying customer?

ETA. Ah I see he is in an Atlanta hospital and he is stable and not on a ventilator. Here's hoping for a full recovery.

I personally know some who believe this is a hoax just to obtain political goals. Yep, you’re right. These people scoff right in my face when I refuse to not wear masks and they laughed at me when I started to prep in January when I saw this mess coming (although the degree has shocked me). I have people I love very much who have worked “ground zero” in this horror. The things they saw wrecked them emotionally. And the conspiracy theorists I know had the audacity to respond that “maybe we imported bodies to make it look like a lot of death”. I can’t. I just can’t. I am very passionate about this and I can get snippy and judgmental when I see or read people acting (IMO) the fool. And I won’t apologize for my incredulity because it wouldn’t be a sincere “sorry”. I feel like I’m surrounded by dolts where I live.

I think most of us in this forum feel the same way.

It's hard to say what the scheme is, exactly. Some states seem to report county by county as the numbers come in, but others seem to report the entire state at once. I haven't found any real rhyme or reason as of yet.

Brilliant article! “Normal died” is basically what I emailed my daughter last night about a job-related move that’s been in the works for almost a year. I will send this to her.

I’m interested in the type of person who reaches the “acceptance” stage immediately and doesn’t try to “bargain” inwardly for an early resolution to the pandemic. I’m that accepting person, not to my credit...it’s just who I am. I didn’t have to work to get there. How do I differ from someone who rails against the unfairness of it all and is still in denial? It would be an interesting study.

I’m in denial. I think wearing masks will become more of a long term trend for many on things like trains, buses, even planes and in areas that are super crowded. Like in some Asian nations.

But I still feel very optimistic that this is going to get better, either through running it’s course to some degree, herd immunity through contagion and vaccines, better treatments and more targeted tracing and isolation of break outs, in the future.

I do feel positive. As long as we start to try to get on board and be a community, no matter what, I think we can weather the storm until things get better. I do believe things will get better, and not years from now, either.

Humans are very adaptable and we have a ton of smart, committed, experts working on this.

Somewhat pertinent, and pandemic related:

In order to help support Colorado restaurants during the pandemic, they are now allowed to sell alcohol to go. Previously, alcohol had to be bought at liquor stores (or grocery stores, but they were limited in how strong the alcohol could be.) When I first heard this, I thought "that's nice."

Last week, I had to run an errand to near where I used to live, which was one block away from one a restaurant which is a favorite of my friend and I. We would get lunch there and we would each have a margarita every couple of months. I asked my friend if she would like me to pick up takeout so we could have lunch together (six feet apart) on her deck. I called in our order of a chicken quesadilla and chicken enchilada. When I got there to pick it up I asked if I could get two margaritas on the rocks to go. The restaurant worker looked at my gray hair and said "sure" and added two margaritas in plastic to-go cups.

I don't believe I have ever before driven with open alcohol in the car in my life but I figured that I could point to the time on the receipt and the full cups if I got pulled over. My friend lived about twenty minutes away so the food was still warm and the margaritas were still cold. Best d**** margarita in my entire life.

And that is absolutely true. My Facebook feed is so curated at this point that it is an occasional post by sane family and friends as well as posts from craft groups. When I check a wider area, I almost always regret it.
