actually a pandemic has been expected by epidemiologists for quite a while. That is why there was a playbook left by prior administrations for all subsequent administrations, so they would be prepared: there was also a Pandemic task force (or whatever they were called) which was disbanded by Trump- this is NOT A POLITICAL MESSAGE: just a fact. I will leave it at that.
Do you have a link to the pandemic playbook. It would be interesting to see what it says if it is a fact.

You know which masks are great and comfortable in a summer? Real silk masks. People who are complaining they can't breathe in masks should really just try them. Silk is good for skin and is very breathable.
Apparently they might be good as covid protection too. So instead of doing ridiculous things like wearing a mesh or a lace mask, just use a real silk mask.
"The researchers found that when used for protection of the face, silk is the most effective at preventing the penetration of droplets, and the least absorptive of water, because of its intensely hydrophobic character compared to the other fabrics tested. In short, the face coverings made of 100% washed silk repelled water just as effectively as masks, but are hydrophobic, unlike the latter, and can be made ready for immediate reuse by sterilization."
Silk useful as face mask and PPE in COVID-19

One school is consulting with the parents to see what they want to do.
I have blacked out the school's name for privacy reasons. A friend of mine posted the school's notice to parents.

(I haven't provided a link, for privacy reasons. Hope that is okay)

My county school corporation gave parents several options. They had to pick by a certain date so plans can be made.

Thanks for this perspective.

I think the Supreme Court would have to decide. Can you imagine how bogged down that would get.

Many people don’t understand federalism and the division of powers. The federal government cant’t force laws upon the states. It’s not that easy. Thus the pickle we are in.

Let’s not forget the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
It is that easy actually. During the next round of coronavirus relief package discussions this month, congress can simply invoke the Spending Clause and deny aid to states that do not meet certain conditions. A declared public health emergency certainly exceeds the threshold for "the general welfare of the country."

Dianne Feinstein has already written such an amendment to the next bailout bill. Easy peasy.

Calif. Sen. Feinstein wants to deny coronavirus money to states that don't require masks

My friend also expressed her fear for the teachers, even though she is not a teacher. In smaller communities, and grouped townships where the children attend the same school, I think many people personally know the teachers outside of school.

Yep, just earlier today I sent out support to the teachers that I know personally.

They are teachers, they are in their 30's and also have young children.

Most folks here, it seems the demographics sway to older as to the median age. So I'm not as exposed to their angst. (No kids, no grands) But I'm sure it's much more than mine as an older person iykwim.

I have my pity party by myself sometimes, but mostly My heart breaks for so many others, and I don't know what the answer is to any of this. Other than to continue to put on a false face and help others financially or be the old lady that gives flowers to folks in the hood daily to make them happy.

There is no good answer

MOO

Here’s what I would like to say to those politicians who don’t want to mandate the wearing of masks. Please tell your constituents the following: “The Covid-19 pandemic is real and many people are dying. If you are a good patriotic American who wants to do the right thing during a national crisis, you must wear a mask. I’m certain that all good Americans will find this a small price to pay in order to ensure the health and future prosperity of our great nation.” This is just my humble opinion and suggestion and MOO.

This is the least that those who run our government should do. It does not involve all that much. Let’s stop the wishy-washy, “It could be a good idea to wear a mask.” IMO

Also, this is not a mandate, just changing the narrative away from those who think only wimps wear masks.

@Bravo , is your PM still giving daily pressers on such?

Others, is Cuomo still giving pressers on such?

I followed and then went away from this for a month, and I don't even know. I followed daily for months...

I don't see links for such being posted anymore, so I assume have stopped. Such a shame if so that they aren't taking place.

Hi dixie. Not daily pressers anymore. A few times a week now and Premier Doug Ford (Ont.) speaks when information needs to be relayed.

Interesting revelation this morning. You can catch more bees with honey, as they say.

I'm absolutely not to going to call my fellow humans dumb, stupid, moron, cuss words, or whatever. I may think it lol.

Part of our problem I believe is we are so doggone inflexible and we've (as a society) got so proficient at virtue shaming we're obsessed with it.

I run a small outdoor market on Saturdays. I just showed up with bottles of hand sanitizer this morning. To anyone that didn't have hand sanitizer I just asked "would you mind displaying this prominently? We need to be understanding and considerate to everyone". Not one complaint. I could have said "hey you idiot put this out". It wouldn't have went over well.

I was also shamed, so it goes both ways ha ha. A natural healing place told me a thing or two about the fact (after a discussion) I'll be first in line for a covid vaccine. Followed up with "children that are vaccinated are abused". My reply "you do realize these are my grandchildren in my arms? They look abused?". Literally all that stopped my mouth at that point was (a) grandchildren and (b) I'm a professional market manager. Her I know it all attitude soured me.

That's half the issue with this country. Everyone is so busy virtue shaming based on their beliefs they can't just state their routine calmly and let it go. I really think it would win more people over if we would all tamp it down.

My morning observations. :)

All jmo

I don't think that denying aid during a pandemic is a good idea because it will harm innocent people who are following the recommedations along with the ones who are not.

In the present study, simulated sunlight rapidly inactivated SARS-CoV-2 suspended in either simulated saliva or culture media and dried on stainless steel coupons. Ninety percent of infectious virus was inactivated every 6.8 minutes in simulated saliva and every 14.3 minutes in culture media when exposed to simulated sunlight representative of the summer solstice at 40°N latitude at sea level on a clear day. Significant inactivation also occurred, albeit at a slower rate, under lower simulated sunlight levels.

The Journal of Infectious Diseases, Volume 222, Issue 2, 15 July 2020, Pages 214–222, Simulated Sunlight Rapidly Inactivates SARS-CoV-2 on Surfaces

The present study provides the first evidence that sunlight may rapidly inactivate SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces, suggesting that persistence, and subsequently exposure risk, may vary significantly between indoor and outdoor environments. Additionally, these data indicate that natural sunlight may be effective as a disinfectant for contaminated nonporous materials.

I agree - I understand the intent to get these governors to do what's right, but if they cared about their people more than politics, they would have done it sooner. I doubt they'll change, and their people will suffer more. I've got zero problem with class action suits against them if that's an option, though.

Not sure if this information has been posted yet . . .
Israeli Data Show School Openings Were a Disaster That Wiped Out Lockdown Gains

Of 1,400 Israelis diagnosed with COVID-19 last month, 657 (47 percent) were infected in schools. Now 2,026 students, teachers, and staff have it, and 28,147 are quarantined.

JERUSALEM—Israel’s unchecked resurgence of COVID-19 was propelled by the abrupt May 17 decision to reopen all schools, medical and public-health officials have told The Daily Beast.

“We know Israelis have terrible discipline, but now, it’s the leadership. ”
— Galia Rahav, Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv
The assessment of Israel’s trajectory has direct bearing on the heated debate underway in the United States between President Donald Trump, who is demanding a nationwide reopening of schools for what appear to be largely political reasons, and health authorities who caution it could put the wider population at risk.
Israeli Data Show School Openings Were a Disaster That Wiped Out Lockdown Gains

Thanks for this update on Israel. Last story I saw was at least a month ago and they had just that one school with something like 170 people (staff and students) infected.

Obviously, the schools became a big vector in their new situation. I keep seeing people posting that "Israel opened its schools" so we should too. They need to read this.

So here's a snapshot from my NY town, which is getting ready to bring back college kids.

Last week, it felt delightful to go shopping and see the Starbucks reopened in the store. People wearing masks, distancing, all that. This week, same good behaviors, but WAY more people, and the mall is open now.

Husband and I visited local restaurant to eat outside. We did see the indoor dining space - lots of plastic partitioning. It all should "feel" normal, but it's really a sense of dread.

Kiddo tells me about customers scoffing more and more about masks in the store. It's like we are victims of our own "success" in that our county has few cases. So people think it's not a problem, that it's all hype. What people fail to understand is exponential growth - you start slow and low, but when you get careless, it will skyrocket. All they see is the success. Then reality hits, seemingly out of nowhere. This seems to be happening in parts of CA right now. It will happen to us, too, I am sure.

So I bought some powdered milk and a little extra toilet paper and food while I was out. We have to be in this for the long haul, and plan for success (progress + safety) every step of the way.

And as it was known about since April apparently. Presumably Dr. Fauci and other CDC knew it was coming down since April IMO. Also, the hospitals can report to the state and they upload the data as far as it was explained on the last thread. Not sure who or if the ball was dropped but I thought this was all resolved. Apparently not ?

HHS directed and posted on the CDC site, yesterday. The links in the last thread, will try to find. But its up and running with the same data.

Certain information was never, nor do I see being available to the public. Like number of Covid pts, drugs on hand inventory, ICU capacity..that's considered proprietary information and won't be released. Can you imagine if it was, folks would be hospital shopping.
