We have a constitution, too.

And our states are responsible for their own decisions. Hence the closing of some states to other states. No-one told them to do that. It is their own directive.

However, what we are doing right .... all state leaders have been consulting together in National Cabinet (phone call meetings/online meetings/physical meetings when it is safe) where they plan strategy, work out their differences, and get on the same page.

This provides good cohesive leadership for us all to follow. It helps us reach a mutual goal that is good for the country.

Please remember that Australia is geographically as big as the US. People from different areas think in different ways, approach things in different ways, BUT cohesive leadership from all states are pulling the nation's approach together.

Interesting statement with no reference to health: "... some health experts argue children are better off in classrooms for their development, and also to allow parents to return to work."

Yep. Let's think last of the fact your child could become seriously ill or die.
U.S. divided over mask wearing and schools reopening as coronavirus cases surge

Next is my opinion. Wake up, People. I'm tired of this "better for their development stuff." Home schooled children do as well, if not better, academically as kids who attend regular schools. Try the National Spelling Bee, as an example. Try this website:
30 Successful People Who Were Homeschooled

Sports: Home schooled athletes... Try Serena Williams or Tim Tebow...
The Most Famous Homeschooled Athletes
But parents need to be able to go to work, or work from home, and neither is easily done when homeschooling children full time.

I feel like this will sound like a child is asking, so apologies for my lack of knowledge... But does the President have the power/authority to mandate for instance that across the whole of the US, masks must be worn in shops?

ETA just saw Rocco's post 221.

Looks like that's a "no" then

This has all changed me. I wonder if I'm still the glass half full person I've always been.
I need the company of people, I think that's what been missing and the phone etc is not really a long term substitute.
I actually felt so down a week or so back that I gave myself a hug LOL
I just hate to think of others out there, and how much their life has changed.

I thought I would enjoy being alone but you can have too much of it before you really do need to be with other people.

Noooo dont say that, we're looking to you for light!

We can sidestep this however we want. The Queen is not a ruler here. Not such a big difference.

The fact of the matter is ... cohesion among the state leaders is essential. Especially when interstate travel is not restricted.

I really wish more people had a basic grasp of constitutional law in the US. This is spot on. Yet we continue to hear the media spin how terrible it is we don’t have a national plan. God forbid the powers that be tried to implement a national plan either. We would hear all about how it’s unconstitutional.

I’d be fine with some basic leadership and messages of unity. Or even grief.

Hang in there. Your not alone. One day we will all look back on this nightmare and maybe find something positive in that change.

If its any consolation, I think many people are feeling a bit "low mood-ish" right now. I think it has to do with coming to terms with our new normal, and maybe the horror of the situation sinking in. Its really good that you went out for coffee. Sometimes a day at a time is the best way

In Memoriam: Fallen NYSNA Nurses

IN MEMORIAM: FALLEN NYSNA NURSES

Thank you so much for posting this.

That was hard to read. :( I feel it in my gut.

No words. :(

Eta:

This is what we need to see on the front page headlines every day. This is what I want to hear more discussion about from our leaders, emphasis on health workers’ protection.

Grocery shopping this morning. Sign at the door stating that masks are mandatory, must cover nose, mouth and chin. It's a municipal bylaw. Two men did their shopping wearing their mask under their nose. And they were not shopping alone, when the store policy is one person per household. People can be such jerks sometimes.
Home Depot where masks are mandatory - one man had no mask and no respect for 6 feet either - I ran around him

Thanks HongKongPhooey. Maybe my coffee will be the beginning of the return of the unscared me coming back. I miss her LOL
Coffee still to go, hmmm I could still back out, there is time :)
No I'll face my fear and do it anyway, so fears be gone! Poof!

I'm having a moment. How many states do you have? 6?

We have 6 very large states, one very large territory, and one smaller territory. Containing big city concentrations as well as very spread apart populations. Large areas to administer and keep on the same page during this crisis.

Yes, it may be easier for 8 leaders to confer. But it is not impossible for 50 states to confer. I see it as sidestepping an obvious action to get some cohesive approach in the US.

Queensland is three times bigger than Texas - seven times bigger than the UK.
Northern Territory is twice the size of Texas - six times bigger than the UK.
South Australia is 1½ times bigger than Texas - five times bigger than the UK.
Western Australia is four times bigger than Texas - twenty times bigger than the UK.
New South Wales is about the same size as Texas - four times bigger than the UK.
Victoria is ½ the size of California - and about the same size as the UK.
Tasmania is about the size of Missouri - and 1/4 of the size of the UK.
Australian Capital Territory is about 1/3 of the size of Rhode Island.
