Sounds like the Australian Defense Minister and others welcomed the US Marines to the Northwest Territory, and that US Marine arrivals would be subject to a 2-week quarantine period, anticipating that there would probably be positive COVID-19 cases.

NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner welcomed Ms Reynolds' announcement and said local businesses would get a "massive boost" by having the Marines in the Top End.

"That is exactly what we need right now," he said in a Facebook post.

He added: "We've also secured a number of guarantees to ensure the Territory remains the safest place in Australia."

His spokesman said these included health screening four days before they travel to Australia.

The US Marines were likely to undergo quarantine at Defence barracks in the Northern Territory, the spokesman said.

The ABC is seeking details about where US Marines would be treated if any were confirmed to have COVID-19.

Ms Reynolds said the annual rotation was important for the region.

"Hosting this key Alliance activity provides interoperability benefits as well as signals our firm joint commitment to regional security," she said.

The deployment of US Marines to Darwin was first announced in 2011 by the then US president Barack Obama and then Australian prime minister Julia Gillard.

Walmart's policy is:
Walmart will require customers to wear masks in its more than 5,000 stores in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus, the company announced Wednesday. Beginning July 20, the nation's largest retailer will mandate face coverings at all its stores, including Sam's Club

And yet I was there today and there were people shopping without masks. None of the employees noticed? Security didn't notice? The greeter at the door didn't notice? What good is a policy if a store isn't going to enforce it?

Southwest Airlines doesn't care if you have a medical reason as to why you can't wear a mask. You have to wear one or you can't fly on their airline.

"If a Customer is unable to wear a face covering or mask for any reason, Southwest regrets that we will be unable to transport the individual."

Walmart here has an elderly gentleman standing outside the entrance under a blue pop up tent. He tells each person that doesn’t have a mask that must have a mask. Or to wear it correctly. I heard one person refuse and a heated argument ensued. I had already entered the store and did not turn back to see the outcome. A few hours later there was a post on ND that he entered without a mask because the local police dept will not help with the issue because it is not enforceable.
It’s a mandate with no penalty.

I'm sorry. :(

Thank you. I mention it only because the number of deaths reported can feel like just a number. But in reality, they are people whose human connections are keenly felt far beyond Florida.

Oh crap. People can be such jerks. Perhaps Walmart needs to hire some of those hefty, out-of-work bouncers from the neighbourhood pubs.

I firmly believe it can be enforced as a trespassing issue. Tell them to leave and if they won't it's trespassing. Nothing to do with a mask mandate that way.

The other side of the coin is no one wants to be shot or attacked for enforcing store policy. Most police are also busy and stressed enough due to other shenanigans nowadays.

Tough call. Jmo

Thanks for that. I did know about that one and that it had been contained. The resurgence was from a quarantine hotel and not from the US, I understand, but SA mentioned countries (plural) so I am wondering which countries.

I can think of just one which is Japan.

With the situation on Okinawa, it is important to keep the context in mind when reading news reports. The Okinawan government leaders are fierce opponents of the US military bases in Okinawa, but the federal government let by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe supports this U.S. Japan security alliance and US military presence in Japan. Since WWII, this has been a complex relationship with the US military. So when we read news from Okinawa, we have to take this into consideration and how accounts of the COVID situation related to the military are reported in the media. It is important to separate the facts about COVID-19 in Okinawa from issues related to bilateral relations issues.

But then it becomes trespassing, and that’s when the cops can get involved. If you tell someone they cannot come on the property and they do... That’s how the cops are supposed to be handling it. I wonder if your chief of police is anti-mask. Because they didn’t do their job.

"With US military obviously falling sick ... as we have evidenced by US military bringing covid into our own countries and trying to cover it up. Indicating that there is perhaps rampant covid among the US-based military as well."

"This gives some kind of freedom to the US that it should be allowed to be spread by the US to other countries?"

"All in all there are numerous countries that had the virus brought to them from the US."

"The list is growing..."

"Don't forget that US marine that brought it to the Northern Territory which is in Australia."

"Because they were denying that it existed and were not testing."

These are the comments I disagree with that are insinuating US troops are infecting other countries and covering up. I have seen no links or proof of this so IMO accusations of cover ups and spread are false without such links. Yes, troops have been tested and have had positives but the countries that happened in already had the virus. If US troops in the UK tested positive I would not dream of accusing an ally, as we already have the virus here.

The one incident in the Northern Territories was detected on arrival.

"The new case brings the total number of coronavirus cases recorded in the Northern Territory to 32.

Ms Fyles said the case presented only a "very low risk" to the Northern Territory community.

"This is not someone who has been mixing in our community and this is not a case of community transmission," she said.

"This is an individual who arrived in Darwin on a charter flight, they went through the military side of Darwin airport and they have been in quarantine.

"So there is a very low risk to Territorians, but it is important for them to note that another case has been diagnosed in the Northern Territory." "

No cover up.

Thanks for the clarification. From all the news that I have read, the US military has a pre-travel screening process in place, and a quarantine process in place on all of its overseas' military bases. And let's not forget that the leaders of these countries where our military are serving overseas have invited us into their countries based on bilateral relations and security issues that do not go away during a pandemic.

Thank you for the clarification. I'm glad the US military was invited and seen as positive.

Quarantining incoming military is wise. Happy they provided a place for our troops to do this.

Moo...
