Perhaps the store could implement the mask mandate much like our local airline handles the requirement to have luggage xrayed and submit to random xray checks and drug residue checks. A sign reads that you don't need to consent, but if you do, line up HERE. If you choose to not consent, line up in THIS LINE. The non-consent line takes you back outside. Heh!

Simply deem the non-wearers "vulnerable" and allow them set times to shop, like they did (in the UK) for the elderly/vulnerable and NHS staff.

BBM. The blackout rules in WW2 were not legally passed as laws either, but they were strictly enforced.
You do not have to force someone to wear a mask just as you do not force people to wear a shirt. You just refuse them entry.
I think they were and they had ARP wardens to enforce it. Also there are public spaces like shops, libraries etc and private alcohol/age licences places like nightclubs requiring an entry fee. These operate under different laws and they risk losing their alcohol and club licences if they do not have bouncers for troublemakers. There are no laws for mask and mask enforcement AFAICS.

In South Australia we cope by only allowing a certain number of people per seating. Whatever our state covid rules allow at the time (it changes and/or depends on the size of the resaurant).
Restaurants usually have two or three seatings a night. For example, 5-7pm, 7-9pm, 9-11pm .... some don't have the late seating.

Once reservations for the seatings are full, or the restaurant seating becomes full without reservations, people are politely turned away after being offered a reservation at another time.

A couple of fitness chains are being allowed to re-open by adopting exactly that scheme. Members will make reservations and total allowed in at any one time will be strictly limited.

And then the essential retail workers are being exposed to all of the "vulnerable" at once. It wouldn't work anyway, as you could never tell somebody who won't wear a mask that they can't shop anytime they please.

Oh my! In BC Canada we now have 4311 cases,,,with previous low numbers now rising between 70 and 80 a day. It’s being blamed on young people who won’t stop partying, but vacationers might be just as bad in our lakeside community towns. Our town is full of vacationing Albertans who have four times our numbers in their province. On the August long weekend I counted 50 people and 10 dogs crammed onto a 60 foot wide end of a road beach access between 10 am and 3:00 pm. That is directly beside our lakefront home. In the meantime, I spoke by email yesterday to our usual summer neighbours who live in Texas and can’t get up through the border. I wanted to tell them that we have been watching their empty house pretty carefully and all is well. It turns out one of their employees has Covid and is in quarantine so they they themselves are in isolation. They are well in their 80’s. Then to top off our day, my husband got an email from his son. Son was on a rant about this all being a hoax to force microchipping etc. to start another world war etc. What the heck! I was upset but husband was appalled and emailed back simply stating,,I am your father....I don’t share your views and I do not want to discuss politics and conspiracies with you. In other words just talk to us about normal things like the grandkids. Husband suspects sons company is running into serious trouble with the virus. Anyway,,,all the fears, concerns and craziness seems to be getting closer and closer to home. Not happy!

And make them use self checkout. :)

BBM. People are not taking responsibility though, so it does have to be enforced.
They are where I live. We all know where we must wear a mask and where we don't have to. If you don't want to wear a mask, dont travel on public transport, visit your doctor or hairdresser.

And that, to me, is just making excuses for the stores not taking responsibility for the safety of all customers and staff.

When a country's resistors are resisting compliance of common-sense measures, you do something about it. imo
Well that to me makes you mistaken, because I'm not making excuses for anything. My country doesn't require masks in shops but i am commenting in general as I am entitled to, based on the trouble it has caused in other countries.

So sorry Black Widow to read this. I have every hope your Province will get this back under control. My City numbers have jumped up as well here in Ontario. Vast number are from our Rural Low German Speaking Community. Then we had the group of folks who went to some boating gig and I believe 12 came back infected. Then we have Labour Day Holiday in a few weeks :(

The vast majority seem to be complying where I live, too. I didn’t see a single person without one in M&S the other day, and only two people (a couple) in a massive supermarket. However, tomorrow I have to go to a few shops in an out-of-town shopping centre, it will be interesting to see how many are not wearing them there.

I sometimes wonder if there is a cultural issue in some of our countries.

I noticed in our news yesterday that we are setting up a covid testing station for our Afghan community members at a local college. This will involve leadership from that community speaking with their own and getting them involved in being tested and with compliance of safety measures. It is a joint initiative.

Yes our Local Health Unit is working with communities hard hit.

The stores pay for employees. What is the cost of customer/staff safety, health and welfare?

People here look for answers, but when they are given there is always but .. but .. but.

These things can be done, and probably should be done. Don't let the stores off the hook by giving them excuses. imo
Exactly! I’ll shop online instead of support your store if customer safety is not a priority

Simply deem the non-wearers "vulnerable" and allow them set times to shop, like they did (in the UK) for the elderly/vulnerable and NHS staff.

The stores would likely then have to go through and re-sanitise before allowing masked customers in. Unless they let the non-masked customers in as their last customers for the day and sanitise at night closure.
As well as have volunteer staff work the store while the non-maskers are there.

I think that in Canada, we're pretty lucky to have the Public Health Units. Even our little village, population 400 has a Public Health Unit. When I see that some people have to pay for Covid testing and medical treatment, and that contact tracing seems so disorganised in some places, and that safety regulations seem left up to inept government leaders, and that the public receives confusing or mixed messages, then I say a word of thanks that we have specialised public health services that are managing the pandemic. I am very thankful.

I guess some things in Victoria are still really important to do despite a mandated and enforced travel restriction.

.... and one man was fined after travelling from Torquay to Castle Cove, a distance of over 140km, to surf because there were “no waves on the east side”.
Live: Daniel Andrews details new coronavirus cases, extends state of emergency

On the good side, Victoria has pulled down its new daily cases to below 300 now - 279 new cases yesterday.

Probably because they didn't want us all to panic buy them (à la toilet paper) and leave none for the medics who really were in the midst of it!

I don't care why they said no masks they made a huge mistake. it was wrong - and has caused chaos with respect to masking to the present time. They could have said something like we should use face coverings- that they would prefer masks but those were needed for front line workers; they could have said that face coverings could be made from items we have in our homes. Instead they said masks were not necessary nor effective. Some transparency would have been nice instead of lies
