US and UK are bottom of the pile in rankings of governments' handling of coronavirus pandemic

Americans rank dead last -- by a long way -- among citizens of more than a dozen countries who were asked whether their nation is more united now than it was before the coronavirus pandemic, according to a survey released Thursday.

And they come in a statistical joint last place with the British on whether their country has handled the pandemic well, the poll finds.

In the United States, fewer than two in 10 people (18%) said the country is more united now.

That's a full 21 percentage points below the next lowest-ranking countries, Germany and France, where just under four in 10 (39%) respondents expressed that opinion.

Denmark had the highest percentage saying their country was more united now, with more than seven in 10 (72%) giving that answer.

It might not be that simple. There could be threats of funding cuts, or firings, as we have seen many times and places before. The CDC may be simply trying to survive. I wouldn't be surprised that the administration is in complete shock at the manner in which this pandemic is being handled by partisan forces, rather than the scientific health experts.

Good post. I agree with your take on the situation.

My husband has the Covid Test this morning- bless his heart: i called around a lot of places: some charged over 200.00 for the test--- some had a waiting time of 8-10 days. The one we chose is in Farmington Hills Michigan. You drive up behind the Millenium Building and the test is done in your car. they get your insurance info, do the test and you are good to go. No real waiting time: My husband said the test was kinda yucky- they give you a sheet with info including their web site: the sheet states the test takes from 2-5 days to get results. A friend of mine had the test there and said it takes 3 days: that seems reasonable to me. I would be surprised if he tested positive but you just never know.

Hey lovewings, I'm having a Covid test done in a couple of hours. Perhaps we can compare notes. I'm in N. ON, so there will be no cost or insurance info, but they probably will scan my health card, and I'll likely get a sheet that will give me a link to where I will find my results. I'll report back after the test.

Let me know how it goes!!!! it all went well for hubby- I am kind of squeamish about having that swab going down my nose- i haven't had the test myself----

Ooo Have you been sick ? Were you exposed?
Good luck to you both !

(Not been tested...yet. Surely before this is all over. I Figure the swab can’t be worse than childbirth. I tend to Be even less confident of the short swab “easier“ version)

Hubby was exposed by virtue of being on a golf league where one of the guys (he is younger than us- in his 50's and overweight i am told), is hospitalized on ICU: though my husband had no contact with him while playing, i think it is wise for him to get the test, so he did it.

YAY! I'm so glad - you will sleep better once results are in (he's probable fine - they were outdoors). But better safe than sorry.

New Evidence Suggests Young Children Spread Covid-19 More Efficiently Than Adults

Two new studies, though from different parts of the world, have arrived at the same conclusion: that young children not only transmit SARS-CoV-2 efficiently, but may be major drivers of the pandemic as well.

Unfortunately, the JAMA article didn't go all the way to that conclusion - because the swab data wasn't enough. While the kids have tons of CoVid in their noses, other studies show that CoVid doesn't take root in children's lungs (I don't know about the age group specifics). I can see how the reporter thought it stood to reason, though.

Since it really is the lungs that are expelling when we shout, breathe, sing and talk, that needs to be known. And since kids have less powerful lungs (and not much CoVId in them in the first place, apparently), they do not seem to propel as many virions and certainly not as far.

Interestingly, there are studies showing that kids' noses take on new viruses very well, so that the lung thing doesn't happen - but also, apparently kids' lungs do not have the same structure as older lungs, so that CoVId isn't causing the body-wide disease nor is it causing much lung damage in kids.

There are definitely exceptions - and bigger kids (I've read any kid 10 and over) would have the ability to propel out of their lungs (if it got there). But the studies show that it's the 3-5 year olds (more or less) who have so many virions in their lungs, and yet, we have almost no pre-school outbreaks so far. It's really weird, but I'm guessing more study is needed about the lungs.

Thing is, the techniques used to find out how much virus is in the lungs are very invasive and cannot be done on children merely for diagnostic purposes. MRI is used for imaging in adults. Not all adults get CoVid in their lungs either, but those who do range from moderately to severely ill.

So sneezing would be the way kids transmit CoVid, I would think. Not so much coughing. Before this pandemic I would have said that surely most parents would keep their kids home if they were sneezing - but I know longer believe that. Also, allergies are constant in the classroom, so a kid with lots of CoVId who is sneezing for some other reason..would still spread it.

Kids would also get it on their hands a lot, I'd think.

Scientists found coronavirus in a long-vacant apartment. A possible spreader? ‘Fecal aerosol plumes’ – Fortune

The discovery of coronavirus in the bathroom of an unoccupied apartment in Guangzhou, China, suggests the airborne pathogen may have wafted upwards through drain pipes, an echo of a large SARS outbreak in Hong Kong 17 years ago.

Traces of SARS-CoV-2 were detected in February on the sink, faucet and shower handle of a long-vacant apartment, researchers at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said in a study published this month in Environment International. The contaminated bathroom was directly above the home of five people confirmed a week earlier to have COVID-19.

The scientists conducted “an on-site tracer simulation experiment” to see whether the virus could be spread through waste pipes via tiny airborne particles that can be created by the force of a toilet flush. They found such particles, called aerosols, in bathrooms 10 and 12 levels above the COVID-19 cases. Two cases were confirmed on each of those floors in early February, raising concern that SARS-CoV-2-laden particles from stool had drifted into their homes via plumbing.

Whoa. WHOA. This is an amazing find, JerseyGirl.

I wonder how often that happened in apartment buildings in the US? It would certainly help explain the rapid spread in dense urban areas as well as the mysterious "but I didn't go anywhere! How did I get CoVid?" stories.

Thank you for your initial response- it reinforced for me that my husband needed a test ASAP---- hoping he will be negative!!!!!
