Winter Park, Florida, 70 year old man attacked at gas station because he asked someone to move away from him because the guy wasn't wearing a mask. He got beat up and is now in the hospital with broken bones and other issues, they say serious condition.

Florida man beats, spits on 70-year-old man who asked him to social distance, police say

This is so awful and scary. Two young people attacked a 70-something French man on the Métro a couple of days ago, when he asked them to wear masks (there's a national mandate). He was left in similar condition.

I just don't get it, but it's scary knowing that there are younger people out there willing to attack older people who end up with broken bones. It should be charged as attempted murder, IMO.

There really needs to be more public announcements and education about "Contact Tracing". That response is not atypical.
That’s good to know!

Coronavirus cases soar by 3,497 in the UK in the highest Saturday rise in FOUR MONTHS | Daily Mail Online

Another DM link but this one has numerous pics and graphs and shows in the pics what the police in Cardiff have to deal with.

Looks like UK are in trouble with the case increases but so far, the deaths and hospitalisations have not increased. Interesting survey also included in the pics.

It will take 3+ weeks for the deaths to occur and hopefully, the percentage of deaths per new case will be lower than in the past (we're seeing that here). Instead of the death per case rate being 5-6% as when so many care homes had outbreaks, it should drop to 3%.

I know some people think 3% is insignificant, but of course, it's a massive number for a contagious disease and we'd find it completely unacceptable if, over a period of a month, 3% of pedestrians who ventured to cross a street were killed by oncoming cars.

There are several hundred of us active on this thread over time - it would be awful to lose even one person, but it would be 12-18 people if we all got CoVid.

Stay safe, this next phase has the difficulty of so many younger people being silent, asymptomatic carriers of CoVid.

This doesn't even make sense. Florida's leadership has seemingly done almost every single thing that is contradictory to common sense.

I don't even think that there is a statewide mandatory mask requirement.Despite DeSantis, Nearly One-Third Of Florida Counties Require Masks

That has been left up to local authorities. I guess that way there can be zero accountability. Perhaps, local government will step up again.

Great post. Florida appears to be aiming for the top level of the platform, by becoming #1 in per capita CoVid cases and deaths in the US.

I am sad to say I'm very disappointed in Disney.

Re: the 19th anniversary of 911 yesterday

I remember how it felt to me that the entire country bonded together during that time, and set differences aside, to help the nation heal
People who weren't even directly affected by 911 had compassion, empathy, and a great deal of care for those who were, and our country as a whole
I think that's still true about 911

Not so much with the COVID-19 pandemic

After backspacing alot, I'll leave it at that
It's just my view and experiences

I think so so many of us have the same comparisons flowing through our minds...but also through our heart and souls. I remember so much about the bonding around that time... we were America Strong, and we had friends around the world standing with us.

It was just so much easier when you know you are standing with allies and even some enemies (moo),

When I was in the UK a couple of years after 9/11... my friends there were still on that honorary allegiance of what we had gone through as a country....

My Opa used to live at Winter Park. :( How horrifying! I pray that the 70 yr old man will be well again soon, and that the man who beat him up would get the mental health care that he needs from a nice safe cell. Any word on charges yet?

My Mother's dog, "Dolly", is a rescue, and really doesn't like men. So, she was growling at my husband. The "bright" idea to help "Dolly" like men, was to have my husband give her hot dogs to make him seem more friendly.

Dogs are smart, Dolly realized every time she growled at my husband, she would get a hot dog! Yeah, not exactly what they wanted to happen.

So, don't give the dog treats to help her get over the fear of the mask.

Hehe! I thought you meant the hot dogs were females that were in heat! Oh my. Time for a nap.

That's both perfect and hilarious. Dogs ARE smart!

One of my rescues was terrified of men but loved women. The demographic of my house was me, husband, son who lived with us, son who didn't live with us but worked for us who came to work every day and worked from his old bedroom. Every morning we had a session where the menfolk sat on the floor and I petted them and then scared doggie, saying _____ is nice, Gilligan is nice, _____ is nice, Gilligan is nice. That worked great, except then all the men became part of his pack but I was everybody's pack leader and he would pee all over the house when I left it because he was afraid he wouldn't be taken care of. He's the only dog I ever had to get a trainer for, because he had soooo many issues I didn't know what to do.

My county has no mask mandate. The county next door does. I'm seeing more masks both places when I make my every-other-week run through the grocery store. But the bar thing scares me.

Sorry, must be a cultural thing. I suppose in Canada, "hot dogs" are "sausages"? Toad in a hole? :p

US coronavirus: Get tested if you socialized over Labor Day, Dr. Deborah Birx said - CNN

“People who let down their guard and got too close to others over Labor Day weekend should get tested for Covid-19, White House coronavirus task coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx said.

Much of the coronavirus spread by people who don't have symptoms is happening between and within families and in settings such as neighborhood parties, Birx said Thursday at a media briefing at the University of South Carolina.”

For the most part, I feel that most of us down here have felt "good" about Disney... kind of like "if anyone can do it right, it would be Disney". But the article in the OP does seem to indicate the Disney executives are working too closely with the governor, ---->to be non-transparent.

This additional article does show the economics are "luke warm", not robust.

I hope the man that beat him up gets punished for being the crappy jerk he is. Do you have evidence of a diagnosed mental condition that I missed? He was charged with aggravated battery on a person over 65 and kidnapping.

Let me just say that American students look longingly at Australia right now (as do we faculty) due to the awesome CoVid response. Unfortunately, it would take real effort to clear those same students for arrival in Australia - although it certainly could be done.

I suppose that Chinese students have constituted large numbers of the Australian international student community. That one will be quite the challenge to resolve. I also assume that Chinese students brought actual funds to pay tuition (probably provided by their government - but maybe not?)
Australian students get a student allowance. I dont think that Australia should have to give foreign students an allowance to live.
