Unbelievable really. Anyone know what test they use? What company/brand?

Well, we’ll see what the deal is with the testing. There’s much talk out there about this.

The White House currently relies on a portable coronavirus test made by Abbott Laboratories, which produces results in five minutes and can be conducted in-house by medical unit employees.
As Trump downplays Covid-19 testing, White House begins requiring it.

Within the White House, the rapid test they use is the Abbott's ID Now test.

The White House relied on a rapid test, but used it in a way it was not intended.

But one product they use, Abbott’s ID Now, was never intended for that purpose and is known to deliver incorrect results. In issuing an emergency use authorization, the Food and Drug Administration said the test was only to be used by a health care provider “within the first seven days of symptoms.”

The ID Now has several qualities in its favor: It’s portable, doesn’t need skilled technicians to operate and delivers results in 15 minutes. Used to evaluate someone with symptoms, the test can quickly and easily diagnose Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

But in people who are infected but not yet showing symptoms, the test is much less accurate, missing as many as one in three cases.

Ah Ok. Hmmm. That is quite new isn't it?

This is from the White House speech by POTUS and others about introducing these new tests. It is dated 28th September. Is this when they started using them? Very long so I won't copy pasta but this is a bit too coincidental for me.

Remarks by President Trump in an Update on the Nation's Coronavirus Testing Strategy | The White House

They have been using them at the White House since at least mid-May ... if not since March.

A rapid coronavirus test used by the White House to screen its staff could miss infections up to 48 percent of the time, according to a study by researchers at N.Y.U. Langone Health. The study, which has not yet been peer reviewed, evaluated the accuracy of the test, Abbott ID Now, a machine about the size of a toaster oven that can yield results in five to 13 minutes. The product, which was given emergency authorization by the Food and Drug Administration in late March, has been enthusiastically promoted by President Trump — it was even used as a prop during at least one news conference. Mr. Trump has said the tests are “highly accurate.”

That is a big deal and a major misuse where this could lead to false sense of security all around. JMO

Solomon Islands reports first confirmed case of Covid-19

Solomon Islands, previously one of a handful of countries that had remained Covid-free throughout this global pandemic, has reported its first case.

Dorothy Wickham reports from Honiara:

The Solomon Islands prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has just confirmed in a nationally televised address that one Solomon Islands student repatriated from the Philippines late last month has tested positive for Covid-19.

“It pains me to say we have lost our Covid-19 free status, despite our collective efforts to prevent the pandemic from entering our country.”

The student is in quarantine but is asymptomatic. He had been tested before leaving Manila – returning a negative result – but tested positive later in Honiara.

I think this is a good teaching/learning opportunity (unfortunately) to show that a negative (especially a rapid one) test does NOT negate all the things that should be done at this time in the pandemic - which is what the science has been trying to scream from the rooftops MOO. It doesn't obviate taking the same precautions... wear a mask if you cannot socially distance. MOO. Don't do large crowds etc etc etc etc.

It's gonna be interesting how this is followed up by his team, and his inner circle scientists.... MOO and the media and others.

Those are Judge Barrett’s kids.

None of them are wearing a mask. The whole thing is insanity. As if wearing a mask was just for the "non elite". Which, if you ask me, from what I have seen, most of the "elite", were the "super spreaders".

Abbott said this. I got curious and went to their website.

Abbott Statement on First Family COVID-19 Diagnosis

Citing data from the flawed and debunked NYU study is careless and irresponsible. Science matters. The small NYU study on ID NOW was rife with limitations, including testing methods, poor sample collection, and the inclusion of many patients who were weeks after having reported symptoms.

One of the sons also took pics with Sen. Tillis
Barrett had it in the Summer maybe the kids had it also.

I forgot my kids mask yesterday and he accused me of trying to give him the virus.

Are we the only country using these tests? Anyone know?

Yeah we can talk about China all day. Problem is our’s right now. You/we can sit here and blame China all day long, what good does that do? It’s OUR problem now.
You were just previously saying it was global, so that's why I bring up China.
We don't have to blame anyone but we know what happened with China. They delayed reporting it, they cleaned up the source with no swabs taken they delayed reporting it and grabbed all the PPE for themselves.
Now it seems the testing at the WH is useless. Questions have to be asked.

As Margarita says, you can blame China all day, but gives us NOTHING for our future. China also tried to help other countries, including the US.

This article from Pew Research is a global view of the world. I wish more Americans would hear these messages. We have been groomed to be very selfish, and very isolated.
To me, until we embrace the world together the blame game just sets us back further.
Maybe, just maybe we will see a turn to listen to the CDC, WHO where we will be seen as a better partner in the international family. We all need to save the world..not just our own hides.

Many people believe the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak could have been mitigated in their country with more international cooperation

Majorities most consistently cite climate change, spread of infectious diseases as threats to their country; relatively few mention large-scale migration

People in most surveyed nations embrace cooperation with other countries when dealing with major international issues.

Views of the U.S. have declined in many countries over the past year. Positive views of the U.S. are at or near an all-time low in most countries for which trends are available.

President Donald Trump is generally seen more negatively than other major world leaders, with a median of 83% expressing no confidence in him on world affairs.

...respectively snipped for focus...

There are a multitude of pics on the internet showing Chinese villagers and officials stopping people from entering and leaving towns in the early days of this virus. They restricted movement.

True, China locked down in the early days quite hard, but not for very long, and their citizens have been back to work now for months while other nations languish in shutdowns.

The Chinese are (sometimes) wearing masks, but not a whole lot and now the Chinese government is advocating "revenge travel" to make sure their citizens travel all over, spend money and boost the economy.

Covid is still circling, so it's just downright odd that the Chinese have had such a tiny death toll. This photo was taken Oct 1, at the Great Wall in Beijing.

They also focus on under what circumstances the test is to be approved for in their release...

"We also know from our large post-authorization study that ID NOW demonstrates performance of 95% sensitivity and 98% specificity in people within 7 days post symptom onset."

The issue is that the test is approved to catch folks with symptoms/higher titers. Not asymptomatics or folks pre symptom who might have lower titers. MOO

The three science guys' channels have been shouting this for months. MOO (Dr. Campbell, Dr. Henson, Dr. Seheult's channels)

The West Wing started wearing masks on Friday.

At the White House, staff members were in various stages of shock and disbelief Friday, unsure how to respond to a situation that may have been predictable but that many of them had never taken seriously. Some aides stayed home Friday, and others who for months have generally gone without masks in the West Wing in deference to a president who scorned them almost universally covered their faces.

Yes, it's amazing and what scientists have been touting as to what a true lockdown combined with distance/masks/hygiene combined with aggressive testing and tracing and quarantine/isolation can do. Examples are China, South Korea (who had their first patient same day as US) and Australia (@SouthAussie kudos) .. and more. Fauci has even stated that it could be more effective than a vaccine trying to encourage folks to follow regime.

MOO

JMOO, but the lockdown in China was short-lived and it's people have been out and about--keep in mind they're packed like sardines in that nation--for months without seeing anywhere near the death toll of other nations.

These look really useful for testing people with symptoms, but not for the purposes used at the Rose Garden. From your link -

We also know from our large post-authorization study that ID NOW demonstrates performance of 95% sensitivity and 98% specificity in people within 7 days post symptom onset.
- but -

We know that a person with COVID-19 may be contagious 48 to 72 hours before starting to experience symptoms. Emerging research suggests that people may actually be most likely to spread the virus to others during the 48 hours before they start to experience symptoms.

I do agree that we have to follow these testing procedures more closely. Not just at the WH. They are being widely distributed right now, so are people in all these states potentially at risk. moo moo---> I thought I had heard some issues with Abbott earlier in the year.....but can't remember specifically.

Abbott-BinaxNOW-Ag-Card-rapid-test.jpeg

The Trump Administration is detailing the national distribution plan for the Abbott BinaxNOW Ag Card rapid test to assist Governors’ efforts to continue to safely reopen their states. BinaxNOW is a unique testing option to provide support to K-12 teachers and students, higher education, critical infrastructure, first responders, and other priorities as governors deem fit.

The BinaxNOW rapid test – the only U.S. Food and Drug Administration-authorized antigen rapid point-of-care test that does not require an instrument – is easy to use, will produce COVID-19 test results in 15 minutes, and costs $5.

“This distribution of tens of millions of rapid tests is the fruit of President Trump’s effective national testing strategy, which draws on the best of the public and private sectors,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar.

Yes, I have been keeping up with what is happening in China.
It is always of great interest to us in Australia ... something that we watch.
We are quite isolated down here among all these Asian countries.

I don't believe there is any scam there. They likely under-reported their casualties from the virus. They are easily offended. But they also have the capacity to lock down hard and fast, and their citizens do not question that. They do as they are told.

We have had journos there until a few weeks ago, when they quickly fled the country. I mentioned it here when it happened.
