Lockdown had the opposite affect in New Zealand with regard to suicides. I wonder what the differences are? Perhaps there is more nuance and other factors involved in those US statistics than one would think.

You guys have done such a good job with the Covid that perhaps few are in fear of contracting it and dying. JMO

Here's another article (from Nature) that perhaps is a little clearer on the rapid test issue. The upshot is that positives can be trusted, negatives cannot be trusted...

According to a statement by Dr. Jon Cohen, the executive chairman of BioReference labs, the false positives were, “caused by an isolated contamination during test preparation.” Cohen went on to say “possible causes and subsequent testing has indicated that the issue has been resolved. All individuals impacted have been confirmed negative and informed.”

But the other issues from your link, e.g. loneliness and isolation etc would still exist, more so with more stringent regulations I would think.

I don't know. Maybe fear of dying is a stronger emotion than having to stay inside your home. JMO

I guess we cant really measure that one. Mental illness is a complex beast.

March 20th for me. I know the date as it was the Friday before lockdown. Headache from hell hit me around 6am, pow.

Sometimes it gets me down. I think what has it done to me (and what might it still do)? And should I have the word "format" tattooed on my arm, in case I forget it again...?!

The fatigue days are the worst, frustrating. Mr HKP is concerned and sad, I hate to see that on his face.

New Zealand is such a low populated and sparsely populated country. I’d be shocked if they didn’t do a good job of covid to be honest. I think the same for Scotland; A population of 5 million? Sparsely populated and no major airport hub yet has one of the worst death rates in the world. It’s crazy.

It annoys me when people compare a country like NZ’s figures to the US or even the UK and try to imply it’s a leadership issue when actually they are not remotely comparable countries at all.

Dr. Leana Wen, an ER physician and CNN medical analyst, tweeted that if Trump were her patient, "in unstable condition + contagious illness, & he suddenly left the hospital to go for a car ride that endangers himself & others: I'd call security to restrain him then perform a psychiatric evaluation to examine his decision-making capacity."

But she's not a homeopath (I had one as my PCP for more than a decade - there's no way he ever told me to lose weight, even though my cholesterol was high; he recommended oatmeal and statins).

That didn't work. Losing weight did work. We talked about it. Neither he nor his staff wanted to "offend" the patients - he was a very, very sweet doctor. But...well, probably not the best doctor because sometimes a doctor has to say no or be tough.

It depends on what sort of support structures there are for mental heath services, Senior community services and so on. Even with stricter lockdown measures, there were free services a phone call away.

Obviously, there are complexities to the situation. And responsible leadership means weighing the pros and cons of each decision in a measured way. Because quality of life is not just a zero sum deal. That's why one must have trust in one's public health officials (and government officials) to make the best, most informed decisions based on scientific evidence and facts for the community at large. Which means they should be fully transparent and accountable for their decisions which affect so many people.

Their leader is also very tough and intelligent. I remember when she demoted a cabinet minister for violating the quarantine rules. She castigated him publicly, demoted him, but kept him in a level where he was still useful to the effort. He publicly took responsibility. My kind of leader. No cronyism or malarkey there.

I have to admit, from personal effects when taking just a short term lose dose of Prednisone I’m wondering if his elated state of mind isn’t at least partially attributable to the Dex

Yeah, steroids can be interesting. What concerns me more is the sheer number of drugs he's been given, at least one of which is completely experimental and first tried in humans only four months ago. The possible interactions cannot really be anticipated. Allowing an elderly 74 year old patient to leave the hospital, while still on these drugs, is concerning to me.

Of course, he's not going "home" in the traditional sense. Rather to a hospital suite at the WH only marginally less equipped than WR, so there's that. I imagine the WH has used the past few days to further equip and staff the medical suite there to accommodate his illness and, hopefully, recovery.

That's the only way I'd feel remotely comfortable discharging a 74 year old patient under these circumstances. imo

Here's the deal - they are our employees. He is our employee. We pay them all. We're the big boss, he's the little boss. We need to insist on better for them if he won't.

Jacinda is a remarkable and protective leader.
We are opening up travel to NZers ... they can come to three of our states, without quarantining, when 16th October arrives.
Can we go there without quarantining? Not yet. She is going to wait and see how things go. We are still struggling a little in Victoria. Good numbers, but still too many resistors who may foul their efforts.

Scottish cities though are v densely populated to be fair. Edinburgh and Glasgow in particular are busy transport hubs too, and the Scottish Unis are v sought after.
