Shouldn't we try to flatten the curve? Anyone listening? I think sirens should be blaring. I can't imagine what the graph will look like in Mid-December after the Thanksgiving feasts.

WHO: "There is no excuse for inaction. My message is very clear: act fast, act now, act decisively." (Thank you, @margarita25 )

Christmas Parties, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, New Years Day.....

Are they still having the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Christmas Day Pasadena Rose Bowl Parade?

For an emotional break I suggest watching Hallmark Channel Christmas Dramas. No, not kidding. A USA lady falling for a European Prince is always good.

Pretty snowfalls and lights and decorations! Watch that stuff!

I'm in Victoria and we have just come out of one the harshest and longest lockdowns. We are now on day 19 with zero cases. Our neighbouring state, SA has an outbreak at the moment and have just implemented a swift shutdown to prevent this wildly contagious virus from spreading.

'No time to wait': South Australia is forced into a brutal six-day lockdown with residents not even allowed to leave their homes for exercise as the state is hit with a virulent covid strain
South Australia will enter six-day hard lockdown at midnight on Wednesday
Drastic restrictions come as the state battles a COVID-19 outbreak in Adelaide
Residents will not be allowed outside for exercise and masks will be mandatory
Weddings and funerals will be halted while construction industry will freeze
Premier Steven Marshall said they are battling a 'highly contagious' strain

Yes. At midnight we are going into a very strict circuit breaker lockdown. Only essential workers (nurses/doctors/police) can leave home, and one person if they are taking care of someone elsewhere.

The only thing that will be open is supermarkets and pharmacies - one person can go there once per day - and I noticed tonight when I stopped in (for chocolate :) ) that they are already counting and restricting the number of people in the shop. The line is out the door and down the street at BWS (liquor store).

Must wear a mask if you go to the supermarket.

The plus is the weather is beautiful. :D

This is what Nicola Spurrier (CHO) just told us .....

- Testing has shown that the infection came from the UK
- This is a rapidly spreading infection
- People are infectious within 24 hours
- Many of the infected people are showing no symptoms
- Each generation of the infection takes 3 days (to regenerate/modify, I think?)
- We are on the 5th generation already - the infected source person just landed here on 2nd November

Premier just said "we've got one chance to stamp this out, we must do it now".
The lockdown is for 6 days at the moment.

(ETA: We currently have 22 cases, with 7 more exibiting symptoms but testing negative)

Never heard of a circuit breaker lockdown, how does that work?

And how do you enforce how many people leave home?

If that can even be done?

Oh wow, that does sound like a super strain. Hang in there and hopefully because you've gone in hard and fast, it will turn around really quickly. We in Melbourne know how and what you are feeling.

We were and still are mandated to wear masks whenever we are outside of our home, which I think was a great decision.

At least you managed to stock up on your chocolate, that's what I did as well haha. I still don't understand what the obsession with toilet paper is though!

It means a hard lockdown for a short period, meant to stop the virus in its tracks.

The police will be out cruising. They will pull over any car with more than one person in it, and pull over other cars randomly to see where people are going. People will comply (except the odd numbskull), because that's who we are.

Thanks for answering my question. I thought maybe electricity was turned off!

Guess some people will be laying down in the back seat........The "odd numbskull"

Hope your strict lockdown helps alot. Please keep us posted on the results.

Vaccine Unproven? No Problem in China, Where People Scramble for Shots

Ethan Zhang needed to get back to work. Work was in Ivory Coast, however, and since January the global coronavirus outbreak had stranded the 26-year-old translator in mainland China.

Then friends told Zhang of a way he could get his hands on what might be the world’s most coveted prize: a coronavirus vaccine.

Zhang took a plane to Yiwu from Beijing that night. He stood in line for four hours outside a hospital. He paid $30. He got his shot.

“I feel more relieved now that I have protection,” Zhang said. “Since they’ve started using it on some people on an emergency-use basis, it shows that there’s a certain guarantee.”

Though China’s vaccine candidates have not formally been proved safe or effective, officials have been injecting them into thousands of people across the country, ostensibly under an emergency-use policy.

Potential problems often go undiscussed. Risks have not been clearly revealed.
Copies of the vaccination consent forms for one candidate that were reviewed by The New York Times did not specify that the product was still in testing.

It is unclear how many people have already received a vaccine candidate. China has made three of its four candidates in late-stage human testing, called Phase 3 trials, available to tens of thousands of employees at state-owned businesses, government officials and company executives since July.

Once Phase 3 trials are complete, the companies would submit results to the regulators of the countries that they want to sell their vaccines in. Authorities would review and assess them for approval.

Wendy Zhang, 26, a medical worker from the eastern city of Jinan, said she had to wait 57 days to get her second shot of a vaccine in October because the candidates had run out. She said she had felt relieved after getting it.

“There has been no adverse reaction after the vaccination, indicating that the safety of the vaccine developed by China is beyond doubt,” Zhang said.

Eden Huang, 19, a student who recently arrived in Amsterdam, tried to sign up four times when Sinopharm said it was allowing students to register their interest in getting a vaccine. He also called various hospitals across Zhejiang province but to no avail.

“I am very anxious,” Huang said. “European governments do not take COVID as seriously as our Chinese government.”

Huang said he was not worried about any safety issues, citing reports that the vaccines have been tested in more than 60,000 people in trials. “This vaccine would do me more good than harm,” he said.

For those out of luck, there are always the scalpers. For a fee ranging from $600 to $1,500, they can book vaccine appointments, they say.

I agree that the majority of people will do the right thing, and also agree, there will be a few numbskulls, <modsnip> who will protest and believe that their human rights have been taken away - that's what happened here in Melbourne.

They have traced the virus from a pizza box to another person.

So they are trying to contact everyone who has used this one pizza place ... either in person, pickup, delivery, or Uber Eats.
This is our hotspot.

South Aussie, how does it work there for people financially? I.e. Say if you work in a non essential shop and you cannot work due to the 6 day lockdown. Is there a furlough arrangement in place?

Prayers for you, friend.

Yeah, way too soon to know.
My biggest concern is if the vaccine is safe for people with pre-existing conditions. Such as cancer patients, recovered cancer patients, people with autoimmune disorders, heart conditions, diabetics, etc. How healthy must you be for the vaccine to not harm you?

I feel like at this point, my preexisting condition makes COVID more of a high risk than anything from the vaccine. I feel like it’s a risk I have to take.

The news about Moderna's vaccine is really encouraging. Especially since it appears it can be kept stable at a more forgiving temp than Pfizer's. This is great!!! Having more than one vaccine to choose from in terms of efficacy. Increases our odds of getting this under control globally.

Agreed!! I’m hopeful.

@pocketaccent MOO If someone is already immunocompromised (on chemo) my guess is not a good response.

As to safety, that where we are waiting now on the 2 month safety information to get the EUA in the states. Most folks think less than 4 wks they'll be in a position to apply and have to that stage.

As to comorbidities, did you see the latest Dr. Seheult video I posted (Medcram). He reviewed that in his Nov 17th video with the Moderna vaccine (Pfizer hasn't yet released that granularity - would assume similar? as both are mRNA vaccines?) For Moderna - Out of the 30,000--->> 11,000 were communities of color, 7,000 were 65 and older, and 5,000 had comorbities. So "healthiness" scale is being considered also.

Video is at below HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL INTERESTED TO WATCH

Professor Roger Seheult, MD discusses the Moderna COVID-19 mRNA vaccine: How it works and what we know about the safety, efficacy, and side effects at this time. No mRNA vaccine has ever been approved by the FDA, but Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech hope to receive emergency approval based on preliminary data from their ongoing vaccine trials. Moderna's two-dose vaccine regimen does not require special refrigeration (the Pfizer vaccine is supposed to be stored at -70 Celcius) but a variety of questions remain: Will the vaccine prevent transmission and asymptomatic spread? How long will immunity last? Will “94.5% effective” hold up to peer-review and additional data when it is gathered?
