I wonder which vaccine Biden and Harris will get? I think that's the one I will want.

I would think those two would receive the safest and most effective vaccine. I'm down the list a ways, but my mom, being in her 80s should be within a couple of months I should think. Maybe by then we'll have more data on side effects from specific vaccines.

I hope.

As the world moves through the "first vaccines available" which are the Moderna and the Pfizer (later later and the AstraZeneca, J&J etc which will take longer as they aren't as quick to market as the mRNA ones)... it may not be a choice to pick from the 5 that may be available this summer and later on as the Moderna is 10 times the cost of others. I would think that the government, if over threshold, will purchase and move out more of the cheaper ones vs. the profitable mRNA ones. MOO. (this could be a reason why the US didn't order more Moderna/Pfizer as they thought those, at 10x the price of the Oxford at $3/dose, they wanted more of the Oxford which they did calculations on being available after the first wave of vaccines for Moderna and Pfizer were available which are up to 10x the price?? Dunno)

Fact Sheet for Phizer vaccine. Somebody upthread posted a video wherein a physician addressed some concerns about potential allergies to the vaccine. The physician stated that the only ingredient that could possibly cause an allergy was polyethelene glycol, which she stated has been known to cause allergic reactions in some people. She stated there were no other ingredients that were known to cause allergic reactions. In case you are interested Polyethelene Glycol is in the colonoscopy prep that most of us have taken at one time or another.

However, I am still concerned about having an allergic reaction since, after those two people had allergic reactions to the vaccine in England, it was stated to be cautious if you are allergic to any medicine or food, or if you have had a significant allergy requiring an Epi Pen. So what I glean from that is that you can have a reaction to the vaccine, not necessarily to an ingredient in the vaccine. For example, I am allergic to shell fish, and start wheezing right away if I eat that food (which i never do)-- I am also allergic to sulfa (swell up). So I am really concerned about not being able to have that vaccine. By the time it gets around to people in my group (elderly) there should be more information about this issue, I would imagine.

Coronavirus: 38 more deaths in Scotland as cases rise by 689

A further 38 people have died in Scotland after being diagnosed with coronavirus, the First Minister has confirmed.

Total confirmed cases of the virus has risen to 108,438 – a jump of 689 in the past 24 hours.

The official death toll in Scotland currently stands at 4173, however weekly figures on suspected Covid-19 deaths recorded by National Records of Scotland suggest the most up-to-date total is now at least 6154 – which takes into account this week’s additional deaths.

WASHINGTON — The State Department said Wednesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had come into contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19 and was quarantining.

The department said Pompeo had tested negative for the virus but was being monitored by medical professionals. It said it would not identify the infected person with whom Pompeo came into contact for privacy reasons.

The announcement comes as Pompeo and the department have been criticized for hosting holiday parties amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Secretary Pompeo has been identified as having come into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID," the department said. "The Secretary has been tested and is negative. In accordance with CDC guidelines, he will be in quarantine. He is being closely monitored by the Department’s medical team.”

Pompeo had been expected to attend President Donald Trump's Cabinet meeting later Wednesday although the appointment was not listed on his public schedule. He had also tentatively planned to meet with President-elect Joe Biden's nominee to succeed him, Antony Blinken, on Thursday. The status of that meeting was not immediately clear.

Some of the people he inevitably infected at the highly "Necessary" holiday parties will also have access, so they'll be fine as well.

It's paywalled for me, but we have followed many many many mutations and clades since March. That's how they have followed how the virus crept across the world and how superspreaders were associated and how NYC was primarily from Europe etc etc etc etc.

It's slow mutations, and none of significance.... unless the article is stating that it's one which would make the vaccine (spike protein) not work.

Can someone glean if this is just another one expected and timing due to vaccine coming out, or it's significant.

I do think that now that this is coming out, it will educate MANY as to the reason that vaccines give these symptoms afterwards as so many have said "the vaccine gave me the flu".

More education for the masses in that this is a NORMAL reaction of the immune system, especially when 100% cannot give the COVID disease with the mRNA's. MOO (If the mRNA smmmmmaaaaaallll piece of a few AA's gave such, we would know by now with the trials)

A good reason why many of the vaccines are for DIFFERENT parts of the virus. As I have read and IIRC, the mRNA vaccines are for different parts of the spike protein. Can it be assumed that J&J and AstraZeneca are also for different AA sequences?

Does anyone have a link of comparisons that they have saved as I think I 've read such for 3, but have no idea where to find that information in my history or on the threads as I don't think I posted such at the time.

All of this makes perfect sense. I guess what I’m struggling to figure out is why it’s never once been even hinted at during all of my children’s vaccines over the years. They grew up with an active duty military dad, so their vaccines came from multiple military facilities, civilian docs, clinics, etc. I’ve never been asked, nor is it recorded on their vaccine records because I just looked out of curiosity, what manufacturer produced any of their vaccines. They’ve had 2-3-4-5 doses of different vaccines over their lifetime, and I cannot imagine all of them came from the same manufacturer. I know they couldn’t have possibly all been the same because the combinations of vaccines given in one shot weren’t even always the same.

Perplexing, but probably just a lack of knowledge on my part as to why this was ok for all of their childhood shots but not so much the covid vaccine. I could see not mixing the different types of vaccines, but two mRNA vaccines from different manufacturers doesn’t seem like it shirk be such a huge deal to me. That’s going to add one more wrinkle to this whole thing because I can’t imagine everyone keeping up with their vaccine info or remembering which one they had, etc. Will this also be an issue if we need yearly booster shots? What a mess.

Those are really good questions. I am not sure of the answers, either. But I think that the reason it doesn't matter which MMR vaccine you get is that all of the vaccines are the same type (attenuated live virus). And with some vaccines (like polio) is an inactivated live virus type (which is similar to attenuated).

I think we will learn that the Chinese vaccine, the Russian vaccine, Pfizer and Moderna are all very similar, although they may each use a slightly different set of mRNA sequences that code for the spike proteins (some seem to include other proteins as well - the whole goal is to train the immune system to recognize and neutralize a virus by its unique mRNA codons). It may be the case that the immune system needs to see the same mRNA sequences a couple of times before it mounts a full defense (so slight differences among the vaccines might make that second shot less useful but both shots would still have some effectiveness).

I think we're seeing the same thing with the increasing number of people who are getting COVID twice. The first time through, their bodies mounted an adequate defense, but over time, with the threat gone, the body lost some of its "memory" of how to mount the defense. So they get it a second time. So far, it seems that the second case isn't usually severe (although there's at least one case of a person getting a severe case the second time).

But really, no one knows. If immunity fades to the extent that people can get COVID twice (seems to happen more at the 6 month mark), is this because all of those people had mild cases first? Or not? We just don't know yet. It seems clear that the mRNA based vaccines cause the body to produce way more antigens than most severe cases of COVID and far more antigens than mild or moderate cases of COVID. Will this train humoral immunity to be alert for COVID...forever? 5 years? We simply cannot know.

Recommendations about boosters will surely be made based on aggregate data, and not on personal serology (although those of us with good insurance or extra spending money could go get tested six months and then 12 months out to see how our immunity is doing....)

I found it interesting that no live attenuated virus vaccines have gone to clinical trials for COVID, as of the time of that article (Sept 2020).

That same chart also gives the various types of vaccines and the legend explains briefly how each of them works.
