'The situation is extremely serious': Return to full Level 5 restrictions until 31 January

THE GOVERNMENT HAS announced the country is to re-enter Level 5 lockdown for a month, until 31 January.

The new restrictions were announced by Taoiseach Micheál Martin in a speech outside Government Buildings this evening, following a Cabinet meeting this afternoon.

Level 5 will come into effect at midnight tonight, 30 December for all measures, with the exception of non-essential retail and gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools. These businesses should close from close of business on 31 December. A list of essential retailers can be found here.

Level 5 restrictions will remain in place until midnight on 31 January 2021.

I'm in LA County.
today: " In Southern California, Los Angeles County officials described the grim situation there in a tweet Wednesday, and said one person dies from Covid-19 every 10 minutes."

I have a good friend, who, along with her husband and teenage children, has been super cautious and staying home. But her husband came home from a necessary meeting (precautions, masks etc), and developed Covid.....the whole family. My friend ended up in Cedars-Sinai, 3 days on oxygen and steroids being treated in a store room. No room, no beds, ICU full, sometimes 8 hours wait to even get into ER.
Frightening everywhere.
And still people flout the rules and don't care.

Things were very challenging back in March. Testing was new, if even yet available, contact tracing barely in place, there were shortages of PPE, and scientists were still learning about this new virus. It's terribly sad that this great man was taken down by the virus. I wish that there was a way to honour those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

This man, your friend, deserves to be honoured, but we hear almost nothing about the deaths of health care workers. Instead, we hear about politicians who have died after spurning mask regulations, travelling against the advice of those who care about them, and attending Christmas parties that never should have taken place. Bah!

without the threat of punishment, these people who flaunt their flagrant non compliance

Only those that cross the blood brain due to infection itself, or byproducts or the fever such as AIDS, malaria and syphilis.

Is the PEG used in vaccines the same type used in miralax?

Long term care center about 20 miles from me gets vaccine given by Walgreens.

Courtyards Community Living Center in Fulton held its first COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Wednesday, Dec. 30 for both residents and staff.

I guess there is some overlap on tiers bc I thought only healthcare workers were currently receiving. I’m happy for the residents and staff members at the facility, though. Hopeful it won’t be too much longer before the residents are able to mingle with family and friends. 2020 has been tough on everyone but especially the elderly

Yes MsArk the majority of the UK are now tier 4 which is essentially lock down. Most shops closed, take out only, you cannot go inside anyone else's house or garden, you can only meet one other person outside, no salons, no gyms, work from home etc. Most significantly they are keeping many schools closed until late January and Uni kids are only going back if their course has a practical element. Hospitals are declaring emergency status. Its really really bad.

FM ‘cannot rule out’ restrictions tighter than level four

The First Minister said she cannot rule out the need for tighter restrictions than those currently in place in level four areas.

Nicola Sturgeon’s warning in the Scottish Parliament comes as she announced a new strain of coronavirus is “fast becoming” the dominant one in Scotland.

The Scottish Government will continue to assess the situation daily, as well as considering whether it will be possible to reopen schools as planned on January 18.

But Public Health Scotland analysis showed that on Tuesday, 42.8% of positive tests processed for Scotland in the Lighthouse labs had the S gene drop out that is indicative of the new strain.
