Meanwhile in NC....
(Duck hunting is essential?)

https://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/article248591820.html

“Two North Carolina state legislators have tested positive for the coronavirus in the past two days.

Rep. Brian Turner, a Democrat from Asheville, announced he tested positive for COVID-19 Monday. And on Tuesday morning, Sen. Bill Rabon, a Republican from Winnabow, said he also tested positive.

Rep. Jason Saine, a Republican from Lincolnton, confirmed both Turner and Rabon were on a duck hunting trip over the weekend with other lawmakers including himself. Other Republicans on the trip included Sen. Jim Perry of Kinston, Rep. John Bell of Goldsboro, Rep. Bobby Hanig of Powells Point.”

https://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/article248988910.html

“State Sen. Natasha Marcus, a Democrat from Davidson, tested positive for COVID-19, she said in a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon.

“I have not been to work in person since January 13th, have not attended social gatherings, and have limited trips outside my home to just a couple trips a week for essential needs,” Marcus said in the post. “I hope that I’ve avoided spreading it to anyone else and that this news serves as a reminder to be extra careful in our efforts to combat this contagious virus.”

:(

NC sees highest number of reported COVID deaths in a day since the pandemic began — News & Observer

“North Carolina reported 169 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, the highest single day total since the pandemic began.

The previous high of reported deaths in a day was on Dec. 30.

January was the deadliest month of the pandemic as DHHS reported 2,587 deaths across the state.

As of Wednesday, 9,578 North Carolinians have died due to the virus.”

Guess state legislators don’t read, don’t care, don’t believe, etc.

So much for leading by example.

Did coronavirus come from a lab?
France says no evidence Covid-19 linked to Wuhan research lab set up with French help
No, the new coronavirus wasn't created in a lab, scientists say
China Bat Expert Says Her Wuhan Lab Wasn’t Source of New Coronavirus

I don't want to keep banging on about this. But I hate to see misinformation believed and create wrong impressions. It is not good for all the innocents who live all over the world who may experience backlash due to misinformation.

I am well aware of China's poor humanitarian record, and other detrimental things. But the 'created in a lab' thing just isn't so, according to top independent scientists.

some states have traditionally had off from school for the beginning of hunting season (deer, do not know about ducks)- PA and MI come to mind but I do not know all of them. I know that most people get their food from another source these days, but you might be surprised.... would think that hunting is one activity during which you could socially distance .... IMHO

Unfortunately, I think at that point, we just let the ones who refuse to get vaccinated take their chances with covid. As long as our healthcare system can handle the positive cases that need care, what else can we really do? Once we have done what we can to protect ourselves and our loved ones with the vaccine, if others choose not to vaccinate and end up getting very sick or dying, that’s on them. We all make choices about what risks we are willing to take.

problem with this is that those people can provide a "place" for the vaccine to mutate and still be a danger to both the vaccinated and the vulnerable who cannot respond to vaccines. This is why we need a world response too.... If 10 wealthy nations eradicate COVID and one poorer more remote nation does nothing, we can all sink.

If they had each gone individually to duck hunt for the sole purpose of providing sustenance for their family - that’s a different scenario versus getting together with 6, 7 of your buddies from one end of the state to the other for a weekend fun trip.

When their constituents are told to stay home and not see relatives outside their household much less friends. Those that haven’t seen a single friend IN A YEAR.

Wonder whose place they stayed at?

Also this tidbit.....

“In a press release, Rabon said he was experiencing cold-like symptoms Monday and got a test, but was not experiencing symptoms as of Tuesday.

Turner was not present for the opening day of North Carolina’s legislative session Wednesday, he said. Rabon was.”

Rabon was sick on Monday and got a test.
Rabon was present for the opening day of the legislature session on Wednesday.
He got a positive test result on Tuesday morning.

Thoughtful fellow huh?

I'm in Washington State and just got an email saying my school of about 15,000 students is likely to return face-to-face this fall. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

That's just the university's total undergrad student population! Not many on campus now though.
Oh, thought you were referencing an elementary school. If that many kids were there, I’m sure I’d be dead LOL.

my idle speculation is that they did not infect each other while actually hunting. my bet is that they traveled together in a vehicle, or were eating and drinking together, IMH idle speculation.
crazy that he went to work sick but this is what all the people who do not take COVID seriously do- so does the whole NC legislature have to quarantine now?

Ft. Hays State student-athlete is first in Kansas to test positive for UK variant of COVID-19
Feb. 4, 2020

“TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A student-athlete at Fort Hays State University has tested positive for the U.K. variant of COVID-19.”

CIDRAP / COVID-19 challenges continue across US
Feb. 4, 2020

“Kansas identifies first B117 case
In other COVID-19 news, Kansas has identified the state’s first B117 variant case, in a person from Ellis County. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is investigating exposure and possible case contacts. According to the CDC, at least 33 states have reported B117 cases.”

Officials: Coronavirus variant likely more common in Kansas
Feb. 3, 2020

“A faster-spreading coronavirus variant first identified in the United Kingdom is probably more widespread in Kansas than a single confirmed case in the state’s northwest suggests, officials with a major health system said Thursday.“

Coronavirus variants are cause for concern, but future mutations may be the real problem.
The tiny spike proteins that cover the outside of the virus are crucial to vaccine efficacy. They're also changing.

“An early analysis from Moderna found that while its vaccineappears to be less effective against the South African variant, antibodies remained above protective levels. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is only slightly less effective against the South African strain, according to a study that hasn't yet been peer-reviewed.“

“Another mutation, called E484K, could help the virus dodge some attack by a person's immune system and may affect how well coronavirus vaccines work.“

Side effects reported from my parents after their Oxford Zeneca jab yesterday: headache, aches, heavy arm where the jab went in and dry throat. I'm glad the vaccine is working its antibody magic on them and I'm only 10 mins away if they need anything.

Was this their first or second jab?
