"Dispute widens between Gov. Newsom, school employee unions over reopening campuses | EdSource" Dispute widens between Gov. Newsom, school employee unions over reopening campuses | EdSource
I used to teach school, and I believe that schools should have been open a long time ago. Other states are managing it. Schools here have managed to stay open. And I have been going to work every single day since March. Yes, I see children, people of all ages all day long. They wear a mask, I wear a mask.
Kids should be in school.
Ours in England are still closed. Only vulnerable kids and key worker family kids actually attend. I cant begin to imagine how tough it must be for young families. My teacher friend isnt having the best time eitherYep. But they must wear masks (especially the 12 and overs). And in California, they won't (haven't been). We've got better mask compliance now, in the past month.
But in my own school district, parents voted with their feet. They were given the option to stay on the distance learning model - and 75% of the parents chose that, meaning that even if teachers volunteered to be in the classroom, most of them were needed online instead.
It is, I believe, against federal law to inquire about the health conditions of individuals, so any parent who thinks it's too risky for their child (and most did) kept their kids home. Also, people with other vulnerable individuals living in the home kept their kids home.
We need better ventilation (per the CDC, schools got money to do that - my granddaughters' school seems to be using it properly - but in my hometown, nothing has been done). We need more hygienic bathrooms (not caves with heavy doors and no ventilation). And, we're supposed to put only half the number of kids in the class! (per the CDC and per local district assessment in nearly every CA district).
That means either having kids come 2 days a week per cohort (most schools are going 4 days right now) or hiring more teachers (not available, no money). The 2 day a week thing is complicated for some parents, who'd just as soon leave kids home with grandma or older sibs/cousins.
Whole situation is a mess.
I don’t understand. Why are there people unmasked in the stands ? (Super bowl)
I was gonna watch for a bit but idk. Am I ever going to be comfortable around uncovered faces again. Yikes
Schools have struggled here with a shortage of substitute teachers, cafeteria workers and especially bus drivers. They couldn’t open some schools and not others - so they are still in remote learning only."Dispute widens between Gov. I wish this sign was at Aldi grocery yesterday, small store yet saw 3 totally unmasked and others below the nose. Emailed when I got home and received a very polite phone call from corporate office within 15 min, on a Saturday at that!Seattle, WA

One or two people packed in at the Superbowl, isn't there? We are seeing footage on our morning TV. A mixture of masked and unmasked people in the huge crowd, from what I can see. No socially distanced seating. Is there not a pandemic raging in the US?
