The NFL's giant COVID-19 experiment ends Sunday with the improbable feat of an on-time Super Bowl, capping a season with no canceled games.

Why it matters: The season suggests that with the right resources, safety measures and cooperation — all of which have been lacking in the general U.S. response — life can go on during the pandemic without uncontrolled spread of the virus.

How the NFL countered COVID-19, capping a season with no canceled games

"Dispute widens between Gov. Newsom, school employee unions over reopening campuses | EdSource" Dispute widens between Gov. Newsom, school employee unions over reopening campuses | EdSource

I used to teach school, and I believe that schools should have been open a long time ago. Other states are managing it. Schools here have managed to stay open. And I have been going to work every single day since March. Yes, I see children, people of all ages all day long. They wear a mask, I wear a mask.

Kids should be in school.

Yep. But they must wear masks (especially the 12 and overs). And in California, they won't (haven't been). We've got better mask compliance now, in the past month.

But in my own school district, parents voted with their feet. They were given the option to stay on the distance learning model - and 75% of the parents chose that, meaning that even if teachers volunteered to be in the classroom, most of them were needed online instead.

It is, I believe, against federal law to inquire about the health conditions of individuals, so any parent who thinks it's too risky for their child (and most did) kept their kids home. Also, people with other vulnerable individuals living in the home kept their kids home.

We need better ventilation (per the CDC, schools got money to do that - my granddaughters' school seems to be using it properly - but in my hometown, nothing has been done). We need more hygienic bathrooms (not caves with heavy doors and no ventilation). And, we're supposed to put only half the number of kids in the class! (per the CDC and per local district assessment in nearly every CA district).

That means either having kids come 2 days a week per cohort (most schools are going 4 days right now) or hiring more teachers (not available, no money). The 2 day a week thing is complicated for some parents, who'd just as soon leave kids home with grandma or older sibs/cousins.

Whole situation is a mess.

Ours in England are still closed. Only vulnerable kids and key worker family kids actually attend. I cant begin to imagine how tough it must be for young families. My teacher friend isnt having the best time either :(

So now we have a returned traveller who tested positive after they did their 14 day quarantine and had been released.
Keeping in mind they are tested prior to being let out of quarantine, as well as a couple of other times while in quarantine.

NSW has introduced a Day 16 (after quarantine) test, to try to capture things like this. And the person tested positive when they went for their Day 16 test.

"Test results indicate that the person has a low level of infection and their household contacts have returned negative results to date.
"Investigations to date suggest the infection was likely acquired overseas and there is no indication at this stage that there was transmission in the hotel quarantine setting.
"Close contacts of the case not associated with venues have been identified and are already in self isolation.
NSW Health say COVID-19 streak unbroken despite mystery case

‘The Best of Us': Patriots Fly 76 Health Care Workers to Super Bowl
More at link
The Patriots thanked health care workers from across New England Sunday morning at an airport sendoff for 76 frontline employees who boarded the team's plane and flew to watch Tom Brady play in Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida.

Patriots President Jonathan Kraft was joined by team captain Matthew Slater and Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker at Logan International Airport in Boston for a short event held before the plane took off around 10:00 a.m.

Baker recalled how the last time he was at the airport hangar, it was last year, during the pandemic's first surge in the United States. Patriots owner Robert Kraft had offered up the plane's services to help fly much-needed personal protective equipment he'd purchased from China to Massachusetts.

"I’m thrilled to be back here today because today the Kraft family and the Patriots and the NFL are saying thank you to so many of our health care workers who have carried a tremendous burden of servicing, taking care of and saving the lives of so many people during this pandemic," Baker said.

One or two people packed in at the Superbowl, isn't there? We are seeing footage on our morning TV. A mixture of masked and unmasked people in the huge crowd, from what I can see. No socially distanced seating. Is there not a pandemic raging in the US?

Schools have struggled here with a shortage of substitute teachers, cafeteria workers and especially bus drivers. They couldn’t open some schools and not others - so they are still in remote learning only.

I know nothing of TB12. I just figured he was unmasked on the sidelines pregame (with a moment of silence for the 440,000 deaths, “thank yous” to the front liners and all the “mask up and vaccinate” talk and advertising) because he’s....idk.... special or insert other excuse here

Tom Brady's father says QB ‘probably takes 45 pills a day'

Brady is maniacal about his TB12 Method and clearly doesn’t think all of those supplements are just for show. In an interview with ESPN, Tom Brady Sr. (who was hospitalized due to COVID-19) was asked whether he encourages his son to wear a mask more often. He said does, and added that the Buccaneers quarterback takes almost four dozen pills a today in an attempt to stay healthy.

“Yes,” Tom Brady Sr. said. “You know what, he’s 43 years of age. We keep harping on it
. Frankly, he thinks his body with — he probably takes 45 pills a day. So far, God willing, he’s still healthy. But the answer is yes, we do.”

Both of Brady’s parents had COVID-19 last fall and his father was hospitalized for three weeks.

UK Covid-19 strain is spreading rapidly throughout the US, study says - CNN

More
(CNN)A new study finds that cases of a more contagious coronavirus variant are rapidly increasing in the United States, and significant community transmission may already be occurring.

Although the B.1.1.7 variant first identified in the UK is currently at a relatively low frequency in the United States, the paper says it's doubling every week and a half, similar to what was observed in other countries. The report estimates this variant is 35-45% more transmissible than strains that appeared earlier in the United States, and it's doubling about every 10 days in the country.

I love this too although I sort of wish it said "I could potty train a toddler faster than this" because that's what so many of them act like ... toddlers! lol :p

Now that I think about it ... I need one of these signs in my office!

I wish this sign was at Aldi grocery yesterday, small store yet saw 3 totally unmasked and others below the nose. Emailed when I got home and received a very polite phone call from corporate office within 15 min, on a Saturday at that!
Hoping it helps although I know it isn’t Aldi’s fault, I wanted awareness and have sympathy for the employees who have no choice but to spend all day there

My daughter reassured me that card board cut outs a spaced between people for social distancing. I was freaking out!
