comment: oh oh! 30% of vaccinated showing syptoms is not good!

Gov. Beshear reports COVID-19 outbreak in eastern Ky. nursing home, appears to be new variant (wkyt.com)

The governor says a COVID-19 outbreak has been reported at a nursing home in eastern Kentucky. There are 41 cases reported, including five residents that have been hospitalized.

Dr. Steven Stack says 30% of vaccinated individuals are symptomatic and 83% of the unvaccinated at the nursing home are showing symptoms.

He says the vaccination has reduced symptomatic disease. One of the five residents in the hospital has been vaccinated.

They say it appears to be a different variant from the United Kingdom, Brazil, or South African strain. Dr. Stack says it is the same cluster that they are doing some research on.

The name of the facility in eastern Kentucky where this new variant has been detected is not available at this time. The governor says they’re working to identify the facility and better hold of the situation..

Today I was picked to do the Crossword game in our retirement community- where you stand up at this board and call out the clues and others call out the words....of course I am double masked...and I felt like I was going to have a riot on my hands because everyone wanted me to take off my mask (!!) so they could hear me better- ummmm nope - I shouted literally as loud as I could - one lady said "I won't be coming back until we don't have to wear masks any longer!" oh did I mention that they ALL took off their masks but for a few to play the game...First time and last time I will be hosting that...I was going stir crazy here in my apartment so I ventured down and wow...we get our second Moderna vaccine on Saturday...BUT there are quite a few here who have not and will not get the vaccine- and a few are residents and a few are staff!!
(p.s. see my recent entry re: new varient in a nursing home- I am not stupid!)

Thanks, as said by poster... in the US, all antigen tests are nasal... antibody tests are blood.

I've never heard of any different in following the past year. May be a typo by the OP?

That makes sense and is what CDC US says. Perhaps some other places have different that the US and EAU and first world countries don't use ?

(But the OP said in US... I'm thinking typo getting legs here at WS)??
CDC site re testing - Labs

Tips for Using Rapid Antigen Tests
Below are links to documents for select SARS-CoV-2 specific antigen tests procured in large numbers by the U.S. government. Based on CDC experience with these tests, following these tips will help to ensure the tests are performed correctly.

There are cheek swab/saliva tests for antigens. So it is not true that "all antigen tests" are nasal.

FDA has authorized their use. Here's an example.

These are being used for school screenings all over the world.

Rapid tests that are 15 minutes are not as sensitive as these that take 24-48 hours for return results, but there are definitely non-nasal antigen tests.

At some point, these tests may be in wider use as we get control over COVID and are more worried about asymptomatic transmission (we're obviously worried about it, but right now, the system is still overwhelmed with people who seek testing after they develop symptoms). I know people who are using the 15 minute cheek swab ones before social gatherings - and it is certainly better than nothing and would likely catch active cases that are asymptomatic (but probably not all of them). These were small gatherings of people who were trying to be very careful (nurses, actually).

It's really scary and a big problem when people in group living situations don't get vaccinated, because large numbers of them will get COVID eventually and that gives the opportunity for more and more variants. It's possible the KY variant is a child or grandchild of the UK variant (most common variant that's more communicable).

I to0 would be worried about going into a nursing home, whereas I think I'll be able to venture into a socially distanced grocery store two weeks after my second shot (masked and with glasses of course - and only for a quick trip).

I have to mention that I have questioned the ones that will not get the vaccine and their answer across the board is: "I am afraid of it"

“Gov. Beshear also says Kentucky is monitoring the situation of an Ebola outbreak in two African countries. He says 11 Kentuckians have been in one of those two countries. However they don’t believe there to be significant risk to spreading here. But they are keeping an eye.”

11 people from Kentucky?! Traveling to Africa during Covid and Ebola? Yikes

Brazil is reporting record numbers-over 84,000 new cases 2798 new deaths most if not all due to the P1 variant-as far as there is sequencing. Lack of health care capacity does mean other people can not get treatment they need so the real number of pandemic related deaths in a healthcare crisis country is higher then the reported number.

Peru has been reporting higher numbers for some time, but also Argentina is reporting over 8000 new cases.

Vaccinations may limit-for now-the damage in Chile. No doubt the P1 variant has now spread outside Brazil in the region.

Plus Brazil's vaccine acceptance is declining. Bolsonaro refuses to get vaccinated. Evidently not understanding the importance of leading well by example, and not spreading the virus.

In mid-December, as Brazil’s Ministry of Health scrambled to answer questions about its rudimentary vaccination plan, Mr. Bolsonaro said in an interview that he wouldn’t take the vaccine. “That’s the end of it,” he proclaimed. “Is my life at risk? That’s my problem.”
Meanwhile, as Mr. Bolsonaro continued to raise doubts about the safety of Covid-19 vaccines, Brazilians’ confidence in them shrunk.

My 99-year-old home bound grandmother, 2 weeks shy of her 100th birthday, has tested positive for COVID. She was infected by my fully vaccinated mother who also tested positive. You can still contract and transmit COVID after vaccination. Be careful. Prayers appreciated.

comment: the grandmother was not vaccinated. the mother was fully vaccinated in Feb. The mother has mild cold symptoms that she thought was "only a cold" bbm

So, we are sending 8,000 of our very limited supply of vaccines to Papua New Guinea today. Trying to help them get their covid workforce vaccinated. Have also sent millions of gowns, facemasks, gloves.

And we have asked Astra Zeneca to divert 1,000,000 doses of our current vaccine order to Papua New Guinea. (If EU lets it ship o_O )

Papua New Guinea is in a real mess, and is a close neighbour of ours. Papua New Guinea is especially geographically close to areas of Australia where we have a significant indigenous population (Far North Queensland and Torres Strait Islands).

MSM link to all the people who drank bleach, please.

Poisoning stats - from the US Poison Control Centers - seem to reflect that. Due to the timing of a significant increase in this type of poisoning.

Accidental Poisonings Increased After President Trump's Disinfectant Comments

From the article you linked.
"Most of the poisonings were the result of inhalation of fumes, but there were ingestion cases as well, typically among children who got their hands on chemicals left out in the open."

If you read carefully, you will see that the portion you have bolded and quoted is from prior to the bleach comment (Jan-Mar).

I am not debating the point, I just responded with some stats to a previous comment - in an overview by Time magazine.
