Woman refused vaccines for her daughter. Now she regrets it. — NBC News

“Angela Morris said she resisted Covid-19 vaccinations for herself and her 13-year-old daughter believing that other preventative measures, like mostly staying home and wearing masks, would be enough to ward off infection.

But on July 1, Morris wrote on Facebook that her daughter, Caia Morris Cooper, had tested positive for Covid. Two days later, she updated her friends that her daughter had been admitted to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock and was on a ventilator.”
——
Mostly staying home and wearing masks....so it should be easy to contact trace and possibly identify transmission?
If you’re not going many places, school is out for summer, 13 year most likely not working - shouldn’t be hard to retrace the week or so beforehand? Knowing how/when/what is very helpful and informative.
——-
“Morris said she regrets not vaccinating her daughter against Covid when she had the chance.

"I just had a false sense of security that it was just like the flu and it wasn't that serious," she said. "Obviously it is that serious and it was that serious. Now I can see."

It's unclear if Morris, herself, has since gotten vaccinated, but she appeared to no longer be skeptical.

"I just want people to get their kids their shots," she told the local TV station as her daughter lay in a hospital bed with tubes snaking around her. "Everybody just needs to get the shot.”

I saw her on TV yesterday- her daughter was laying in a bed, I think in ICU
so many people make the assumption "it is just like the flu" - Sigh
What can you say?

Delta Is Driving a Wedge Through Missouri
More at link
While experts are still uncertain if Delta is deadlier than the original coronavirus, every physician and nurse in Missouri whom I spoke with told me that the 30- and 40-something COVID-19 patients they’re now seeing are much sicker than those they saw last year. “That age group did get COVID before, but they didn’t usually end up in the ICU like they are now,” Jonathan Brown, a respiratory therapist at Mercy, told me. Nurses are watching families navigate end-of-life decisions for young people who have no advance directives or other legal documents in place.

I had my second AstraZeneca shot last week. I was so happy I didn't have the same violent reaction that I had to the first shot.

Excellent news, Tootsie! :)
We are really starting to plough ahead with the vaccinations now. This week we have had huge numbers (for us) getting vaccinated. Thank goodness.

Comments? What if it got together with Delta? Delta Lambda? Sounds like a fraternity.

The unusual Lambda variant is rapidly spreading in South America. Here’s what we know.

A coronavirus variant known as Lambda, which has largely slid under the radar for the past nine months, is now causing almost all new infections in Peru.

Lambda (also known as C.37) was first detected in Peru in August 2020 and has spread to 29 countries, many in Latin America. And, since January 20, 2021, 668 Lambda infections have been reported in the United States. In Peru, Lambda is now responsible for more than 90 percent of new COVID-19 cases, a steep rise from less than 0.5 percent in December. The country has already suffered the world’s worst mortality due to COVID-19; the disease has killed about 0.54 percent of the population.

The Lambda variant likely caused the high number of infections during the second wave between the end of March and April, Peruvian Minister of Health Óscar Ugarte said in a news conference. In neighboring Chile, where the primary vaccine is China’s CoronaVac, Lambda accounts for 31 percent of sequenced cases in the last 60 days. The high case numbers are occurring even though 58.6 percent of Chile’s population is fully vaccinated and another 10 percent has received a single dose. The poor efficacy of the vaccine maybe partly to blame. A study by the University of Chile found that a single dose of the CoronaVac vaccine was only 3 percent effective, but that rose to 56.5 percent after both doses.

“Why Chile is getting such high infection rates is perplexing, and it’s likely due to several factors. Because of their high vaccination coverage, the restrictions were relaxed a little too soon, and that could have led to [a] rise in cases,” says Pablo Tsukayama, a microbiologist at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. It was Tsukayama who first spotted the Lambda variant after routinely sequencing the samples deposited between January and March 2021. “But it is also possible that the main variants in circulation, Gamma and Lambda, have some immune escape properties that lead to reduced protection from vaccines.”

The unusual Lambda variant is rapidly spreading in South America. Here’s what we know.

WaPo’s brilliant satirist-in-residence Alexandra Petri’s latest column nails the opposition to vaccination of kids perfectly. Read it and rage.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...tm_source=newsletter&wpisrc=nl_alexandrapetri

Thank heavens someone was pushing back against this horrible new pattern, protecting young people who would otherwise succumb and be vaccinated, almost guaranteeing them a miserable 60 or 70 additional years on the planet.

“Do you know what happens to the millions of teenagers who are vaccinated against diseases like polio and HPV?” a concerned party demanded. “It’s right there in the studies: They go on to lead healthy, normal lives instead of dying excruciating early deaths. Not only that, but they protect those around them through herd immunity."

She is good. As usual, I had to read comments...

Uh-oh, I wonder how many people will not abide by the new mask rule. FYI, 1902 new cases were reported in LA county on July 16.

Sheriff Villanueva won't enforce county's new mask order, claims 'not backed by science'

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva is criticizing the county's decision to order masks to be worn indoors again, claiming the mandate is "not backed by science" and contradicts federal guidelines.
...
"Forcing the vaccinated and those who already contracted COVID-19 to wear masks indoors is not backed by science and contradicts the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines," Villanueva said.
...
The day before California's reopening, June 14, the county reported 135 new cases, while on Thursday the figure had spiked to 1,537 new cases. The rise is fueled in part by the more-contagious Delta variant, as well as continued resistance to vaccination. All of the COVID-19 patients in county-run hospitals are unvaccinated, officials say.

BBM (LOL)

Should vaccinated people still wear masks? SoCal doctor says new LA order makes sense

The mask order applies even to those who have been vaccinated. And that has set up some criticisms and questions from those who say vaccinated people should not have to wear masks.

But Dr. Anthony Cardillo, CEO of Mend Urgent Care, explained to ABC7 why requiring vaccinated people to also wear masks is important as the Delta variant continues to rapidly spread.

Basically, he said, it's to stop even stricter COVID protocols from being necessary.

"The mask mandate is really to offset the possibility of going back into a lockdown status," Cardillo said.
...
"The reality is once you're vaccinated, it prevents you from getting severely ill," Cardillo said. " ... It doesn't really help with transmission. It decreases the viral load in your system. But the real way to decrease transmission is to wear a mask."

Cardillo, who has been vaccinated, wears a mask in public settings so that he doesn't transmit the virus to those around him who have not been vaccinated, such as his young children or his patients.

In fact, on a recent JetBlue flight to Florida, Cardillo went so far as to wear a full respirator hood around his head, the same device he wears in the emergency room. JetBlue eventually asked him to remove the hood and replace it with a standard mask.

LOL -- it really does sound like a fraternity. I heard a couple of weeks ago that they were using the Greek alphabet to name the variants, and I thought the same thing.

Singapore and the UK are both planning to 'live with Covid.' They are worlds apart on how to do that

While the UK has one of the highest numbers of Covid-19 related deaths in the world -- nearly 129,000 since the pandemic started -- only 36 people have died of Covid-19 in Singapore.

Around 40% of the Singaporean population have received their second dose of the vaccine .... the country is on track to vaccinate three quarters of its entire population by August 9. Unlike the UK, adolescents over the age of 12 are included in the vaccination figures.

Singapore is currently averaging 26 new Covid-19 cases a day; no firm date has yet been set for its reopening.

Back in England many are watching Boris Johnson's reopening gamble with alarm.
More than 100 doctors and scientists last week warned that not only was the move premature, but that "unmitigated transmission will disproportionately affect unvaccinated children and young people who have already suffered greatly."

... reliance on personal responsibility has raised eyebrows. "It is very easy to [shift] that onus on personal responsibility and push the blame on the population" if deaths rise.
