I totally understand ilovewings. With all due respect to everyone here, in general I'm feeling a sense of shame for America. There are places in the world that need/want vaccinations but a good portion of Americans have dug in their heels like a two-year old and they obviously don't understand doing something for the greater good. How sad is that?
Can you imagine how this population would have dealt with WWII when they were asked to ration gas/food and black out their homes at night? Shameful what we've become IMO.

And, it is BACK...mandatory masks at work. It doesn't matter what your vaccine status is. So much for the "no masks needed for vaccinated folks".

Sigh. It was good while it lasted.

A family member who works for the DOD told me the same today.
I’m hoping they’ll get to work from home again honestly. But i doubt it’ll happen

Phil Valentine now on ventilator amid COVID-19 battle

Conservative radio talk show host Phil Valentine, who is currently hospitalized with COVID-19, has now been placed on a ventilator.

According to a tweet from Nashville’s SuperTalk 99.7 WTN, the move to the ventilator was made “out of an abundance of caution.”

Brother of Phil Valentine: ‘We haven’t turned the corner to recovery yet’ in COVID-19 battle

The station’s tweet goes on to say the host made the decision to be put on a venilator to give his body some “much needed rest.”

Valentine had previously been on oxygen.

The statement from the radio station, which is home to The Phil Valentine Show, also states they are confident he will pull through, and thank everyone for continued prayers.

In a July 11 Facebook post, Valentine confirmed that he had tested positive for COVID. He spoke about his battle with the virus on his radio show.

“I think I’m on the other side of it,” Valentine said of the virus days later, as he described coughing, congestion, and fatigue that “hurts like crap.”

@weepingangel my personal opinion, aside from Covid, is that HR was getting swamped with medical exemptions, people who couldn't get a vaccine, had medical reasons to not come back to work, excuse that it was too dangerous to be around people who were not wearing masks.

People are using Covid as a reason to stay at home, work, or alternatively, collect unemployment.

It has been an ongoing problem where I work. And, quite contentious. People have quit, it is bare bones staff now where I work.

Side note: I just saw a commercial for Masks. I think it's been at least 2 months since I've seen one of those.

Fla. forecast to report more than 83,000 new cases of COVID per day by Aug. 9

As Florida continues to see a surge in COVID-19 cases from the delta variant, the latest forecast from the Mayo Clinic offers up a sobering look at what is likely coming for the state just one day before school starts.

According to the Mayo Clinic’s COVID-19 forecast tool, almost all of Florida will have cases above 100 per 100,000 and most of the counties around Tampa will be reporting more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 per day.

Statewide, the Mayo Clinic forecast tool said Florida will be reporting a seven-day rolling average of 49,398 cases of COVID-19 per day by August 9, a 132% increase from the current numbers. The overall range showed Florida could be reporting just 31,357 cases on the low end or 83,548 on the high end.

Looking at the county level, the numbers show a rapidly spreading disease. Hillsborough County is expected to be reporting 3,744 new cases of COVID-19 daily and will have 277 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000. If those numbers prove accurate, Hillsborough will see an increase in daily cases and per 100,000 cases of 152% from today’s numbers. While that’s high, other counties will see an even larger jump.

The crisis is making it onto the front page in Florida, where many times in the past it's been ignored.
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article253097693.html#storylink=bignews_main

From the article, Wednesday, July 28:

Florida has entered a peak of COVID-19 cases not seen since January’s surge as the state reported 16,038 new cases Tuesday to the federal government, the seventh consecutive day the state has reported more than 12,000 new daily cases.

The last time Florida had such high numbers of new COVID cases was on Jan. 7, when the state recorded 19,816 new cases, its highest single-day number of COVID cases.

Same thing just happened in Kentucky, for all state workers while inside buildings or state vehicles. Masks back on today. What a shocking turn of events!!!!

I notice in an article referenced in your linked article, that Broward County (Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pompano Beach area) are planning to require masks in their schools when school resumes.

My county leads the nation, right now. We are right on the Georgia line, and all of Georgia does come here to vacation. I guess that is part of the story right now....

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – NASSSAU COUNTY has the highest rate of COVID-19 cases per capita of any large metropolitan county in the United States, according to a News4Jax analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

Baker, Clay and Duval counties are also in the top five counties in large metropolitan areas in America, based on the rate of new infections in the last seven days.

Nassau County’s rate is 744.71 per 100,000, Baker’s is 708.66 and Clay County’s is 541.84.

In my local paper, behind a paywall.
Reports of people who are supposed to be locked down in Sydney, sneaking into my country town to get Covid shots.
Not happy Jan!

Sydneysiders caught sneaking into Bathurst for COVID vaccinations

PEOPLE from the Greater Sydney region have been caught leaving their lockdown and coming to Bathurst to get their COVID-19 vaccination.

It is just one of several serious issues faced by the city's vaccination hub, which now has security to deal with "unsavory behaviour" by people desperate to get vaccinated.

Not to worry, the ADF are soon going to be helping the police to remind these people that they need to stay home. While they are allowed to leave home to get vaccinated, they will be reminded to stay in their own area. Things will change a bit now.

They are probably just trying to avoid waiting at their own vaccination hubs, since walk-in appointments are now also allowed. While dangerously risking spreading the virus to regional NSW.
It really isn't fair, seeing that they are getting the great majority of vaccines sent to their own zones. They shouldn't be trying to take yours.
Stay safe, Tootsie. Keep your mask on, hey.

Sydney COVID: Defence Force called in to help with Sydney lockdown enforcement

"Asked what happens when they turn up, Mr McLachlan said his staff "manage the situation".
"But certainly it's not encouraged, particularly we don't want people from the Greater Sydney region travelling outside and coming into Western NSW so we discourage that wherever possible."

"We have seen some incredibly unsavory behaviour in the last 24-48 hours, particularly in our vaccination centres," he said.
Mr McLachlan said there had been incidents at the Bathurst, Dubbo and Orange hubs.

I have a question: with all of these cases of Delta infection, does that not contribute to herd immunity?

Thanks South! I can understand people starting to feel desperate to get vaccinated so I'm over my initial annoyance at them, but you're right re coming to a small town and taking up vaccines meant for that small town's population.

I think it's just not a very honourable thing to do

Thanks I can read our local paper ones and the Canberra Times. Just never sure how much if any can be posted here and I'm not good at all at paraphrasing.

I was REALLY enjoying the normal, mask-free life, and was looking forward to seeing and being seen by students this fall. This past spring, it felt amazing to be in meetings with co-workers and see facial expressions, and to eat dinner in a restaurant. Now that's gone. I hope the restaurants manage to thrive, though.:(

Bit of a melodramatic headline (well it is the DM!) but a Spanish study shows:

Covid UK: AstraZeneca vaccine has the same risk of blood clots as Pfizer's, study finds | Daily Mail Online

Scientists compared rates of thrombosis among more than 1.3million recipients of either jab in Spain.

Both vaccines came with a tiny risk of causing blood clots, with scientists branding their safety profiles 'broadly similar'. Pfizer's jab may even be more likely to trigger the rare blood-clotting complication, the data suggested.

In contrast, the virus itself was eight times more likely to lead to thromboembolism than either jab.
