Thought you lot might like to see this. Graph shows hospital admissions vs vaccination status. Basically: At age 50 plus, 703 fully vaccinated hospital admissions are from a population of 19.1 million. Meanwhile, 458 unvaccinated are from a population of just 1.0 million.

Cags... do try to keep us informed of the analysis of the lowering numbers.... could that happen here?
Not sure what the parallels and contrasts would be.. but I know we have felt we are following you guys often....

Sorry Toots.. I KNEW you were down under...

I’m sure it WILL happen where you are, just got to let it burn through a few more folk yet. I read last week (don’t quote me on it as I can’t find the source) that a combination of vaccines and infections means around 87% of Brits have antibodies.

EDIT: found a link:

Scientists believe the UK may be close to achieving herd immunity against coronavirus as weekly case numbers continue to fall. There are hopes the end of the third wave may now be in sight after experts at University College London calculated the total population’s immunity is at 87%. The current threshold for herd immunity is 93% due to the contagious delta variant – which was originally detected in India – making the virus more transmissible.

Idk why I’m not seeing more about UK numbers in my daily news browse. Some on Twitter but harder to copy quotes/link the actual sources sometimes

aren’t we like 3 weeks behind uk trends in general ?

Also saw Germany and somewhere else? going to announce boosters. I think for older folks anyway. No link

UK has announced boosters in autumn, for the vulnerable and the over 50’s. Dammit I’ve just missed out by a couple of years.

I think 3-4 weeks behind sounds about right, I really hope we’ve just about hit our peak, but again, with schools out for summer there will be a huge increase in international travel (mainly Spain, Greece etc) so we shall see. Always a big BUT lol.

Covid Live Updates: Germany Plans to Offer Vaccine Booster Shots in September

As concerns grow over a rise in coronavirus cases driven by the highly contagious Delta variant, Germany will offer vaccine booster shots to older people and people with underlying health conditions starting in September, according to a draft plan that is expected to be announced on Monday.

Germany’s move came after a top European Union official criticized the bloc as falling far short of its promises to donate vaccine doses to Africa and Latin America. Many health experts say the priority should be inoculating high-risk people around the world, and scientists also still disagree on the need for booster shots.

UK begins donating millions of COVID-19 vaccines to countries overseas including the Philippines

Over half a billion doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine have been delivered at a non-profit price globally, with two-thirds going to lower and middle-income countries.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said:
This is a global pandemic and Covid-19 vaccines are the best way to protect people and prevent the emergence of new variants.

^^^^^ THIS is why we need to get as many people vaccinated as possible. The fewer hosts, the less chance of mutations. Good to know our vaccines are not being sold at inflated prices to make a profit, unlike most of the others.

Yes at the very end of the article, Murphy says if it doesn’t work, he’s open to mandatory vaccinations in these fields, unless I misread it. I know without a doubt though, loopholes will still be found and those who think “Covid is stooopid” will stick together and stay silent. I’ve been watching it happen for 16 months now.

Good, every state should do this. I see that for now, there is still the option of frequent testing for those unvaccinated. But I would not go to a nursing or rehab facility if there were unvaccinated staff (if I could find that out, I guess).

Study: Severe COVID, higher viral loads, immune response linked to obesity

Among US Military Health System (MHS) beneficiaries diagnosed as having COVID-19, obesity was independently and strongly associated with hospitalization, need for oxygen therapy, higher viral load, and an altered immune response, according to a prospective study late last week in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

A team led by researchers from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, used logistic regression models to compare the viral loads and immune responses in obese and non-obese patients at seven military treatment sites, stratified by hospitalization. Patients were included if they had confirmed or suspected COVID-19 or had a recent high-risk exposure to the virus.

Underweight or normal body mass index (BMI) was considered less than 24.8 kg/m2, overweight was 25 to 29.9 kg/m2, obese was 30 to 34.9 kg/m2, and severely obese was 35 kg/m2 and higher.

Of 511 COVID-19 patients, 24% were obese, and 14% were severely obese. Obesity was tied to hospitalization (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.91) and need for supplemental oxygen (aOR, 3.39). Over three-quarters of COVID-19 cases occurred in overweight participants. Among outpatients, those who were severely obese had higher viral loads and greater peak anti–SARS-CoV-2 spike protein immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations.

Same with obesity and cancer. Seems that obesity strains and changes the body's abilities in several ways.

It can cause chronic low-level inflammation, excess estrogen, increased insulin, cell growth stimulation or inhibitation, effects on cell growth inhibitors ...... (and, importantly, adverse effects on breathing under strain - which wouldn't help in fighting covid imo).

Probably none of this is good when the body is trying to fight any disease, let alone a disease as aggressive as covid.

Obesity and Cancer Fact Sheet

Which is not to say that obesity is a precursor to cancer or covid. Or that non-obese people cannot suffer from either. Lots of evidence of that. imo

When it comes to Covid is there any such thing as herd immunity? Just when you think you are immune to Covid through a vaccine or natural immunity along comes another variant (surprise, surprise) and you find that you are no longer immune.

And as a reminder............ India still has many delta variant cases daily...

The situation is still bad, data shows, but not as bad as it was when the second wave peaked in the country, when daily new cases were more than 400,000.
The seven-day average of 38,548 in daily new cases marks a 3% decline from the previous average, according to data from Johns Hopkins University and Our World in Data.
