Many hospital systems are now requiring vaccines, but it depends on each individual health system and its hospitals. In Ohio, where I live, it is all across the board. The Cleveland Clinic, for example, strongly encourages but does not require vaccines. The Mayo Clinic doesn't require vaccines, but implements weekly testing for non-vaccinated health care professionals (nurses and doctors).

When your in the emergency room and then they bring you back to see a doctor you get the covid test and asked if your vaccinated, in my experience.

I’m 4000 miles away but headlines like this are stressing me out. How have they got to capacity so fast? Did they send out prior warnings about bed shortages? What if there’s a big traffic accident, or shooting, or natural disaster, what happens to those people?

I know not all Americans follow UK news, but it’s been very obvious for about 3 months now that Delta is way more contagious than previous variants and that it’s mainly affecting the unvaccinated. Plenty of warning.

Well, it was hardly a surprise, given their leadership.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a limited state of emergency aimed at giving medical providers flexibility on staffing and capacity decisions and easier shipment of emergency equipment and supplies. The Republican governor stressed she would not be issuing any closure orders or mask mandates.

”I want to be abundantly clear: there will be absolutely no statewide mandates, closures or the like. This state of emergency is strategically targeted at removing bureaucracy and cutting red tape wherever we can to allow our doctors, nurses and hospital staff to treat patients that come through their doors,” Ivey said in a statement.

The order came as medical providers described a “tidal wave” of COVID-19 cases that is putting severe stress on Alabama hospitals. The state on Friday tied the record low for available intensive care unit beds with just 39 vacant beds statewide, said Dr. Don Williamson, the former state health officer who now heads the Alabama Hospital.

Please be careful! I’ve been fully vaxxed since May 26 and other than quickly catching up on my dentist, optometrist, haircut and routine medical tests, I have done NONE of the other things you list because…Delta. It took about three weeks after my second jab for me to realize it was not a “get out of jail free” card because…Delta. The cases and deaths in my county are burgeoning because…Delta and low vax rate. Even a vaxxed young friend got it and has been very sick.

Delta is a game-changer even for those of us who are fully vaxxed.

As I’ve mentioned repeatedly, I was hospitalized in February with original Covid just prior to being eligible for the vaccine. The vaccine would probably keep me from getting extremely ill with Delta, but none of the fun things listed would be worth it IMO if I have to pay with my health or risk someone else’s. I’m resigned to maintaining my own personal lockdown for whatever the duration is. Because…Delta or the next ugly variant.

Guess I will keep wearing my mask and avoiding indoor activities, etc....

Most around here used to wear masks now I feel self conscious because I often am the only one.

These so-called leaders in Southern states are really running out of options, on ways they can kill their constituents.

I'm expecting that next they'll start arresting and/or fining people if they choose to wear a mask.

Thumbs up! I wouldn’t have realized what a game changer Delta is without this thread! You’re wise to heed the warnings even if a mask makes you stand out. You’re protecting others as well as yourself. Will any of the mask-and-vax-free people who think you’re silly be your caregiver if you get sick?! Ignore them.

I absolutely agree that without this thread I wouldn't be anywhere near as knowledgeable as I am about Delta. Or about so much more.

I am with you--I go to the dentist, other docs and hair stylist (both of us
are masked and vaccinated), and to the grocery store--no dining in, no
socializing--- I watch the news where all these people are flying, taking
vacations and living like there is no Delta and I just dont get it---the vaccines
can only blunt an infection and prevent hospitalization and death in most,
but not all.

Ours are almost exclusively minorities with a high school education or GED. The reasons they give defy logic: It’s a government conspiracy, it changes your DNA, it’s the government trying to track us, the vaccine has killed more people than covid has, covid isn’t even real, etc etc etc.

It might be worth the nursing homes giving these CNAs a 'required' coffee evening(s) of education - as part of their job, pay them for the couple of hours that they need to spend at the education evening.

Perhaps invite some doctors to give a presentation that shows clearly what the effect of not having the vaccines can do to them and their families.

I am pretty sure that there would be many doctors who could and would help, and offer real life experience of the unvaccinated people that they have not been able to save, and what those people have gone through prior to dying.

Take some decisive action to educate these low-educated people.

At one point almost no one wore masks around here (after mask mandates were dropped), but now people are wearing them again. Delta is breaking through the vaccines, so if one wants to avoid infection, one should wear masks in public-and not just any masks but N95s or KN95s.

I had to provide either a vax card by email ahead of time or a negative Covid test followed by avoiding any public transportation or going in public without a mask ahead of surgery. I expect (from what I was told) that this policy will be updated to require tests for all very soon at the hospital. I do not ordinarily like being told what to do at all. I want my freedom as much as the next person. I’m generally stubborn and refuse to do as I’m told just because someone says so. However we are talking about life or death here and a virus that is spreading like crazy! In this case, I feel like the considerate and intelligent thing to do is follow the science. I am vaxxed and I mask diligently and I don’t care if I don’t see my pals or go to malls or any of the other things I enjoy doing as long as I can help keep my loved ones safe and lower the chances of others dying or getting sick. I just don’t understand, in this situation, putting “self” or “wants” above the greater good. If we want normalcy back and our pre-Covid lives back, then we all need to pull together, read the scientific reports, change our minds when we realize we are being dumb or selfish. We need to grow. Like what the heck!

On a radio program this week, one of the directors of a large puplic health department was on a panel of county public health directors, and he said that cloth masks and surgical masks provide only about 20% of protection from Covid-19 to the person wearing the mask, and that mask-wearing by an infected person is about 60% effective in stopping the spread of Covid to others. He was promoting mask-wearing, but also noting their limits. I have seen Scott Gottlieb in interviews and others (like Mike Osterholm) advising people to wear N95 masks now with the Delta variant to be better protected.

i strongly agree. I thought with this "oh god, here we go again" I decided, ignorantly, to buy some fun and whimsy masks to get back with the program... but then i realized the 'hell' i am living in here in Northeast Florida, and bought some N95s. I do feel much better wearing the N95s. And quite honestly, I truly feel one can breathe better with these.

i know I felt that way too.... 6 or so weeks ago, when the numbers here in Northeast Florida were just starting to inch up.... but I actually felt it was "like getting back on a bicycle" and just felt downright comfortable wearing the mask again..

Now, in stores, masks are .... i would say... at least 80%.

So just think of yourself of "ahead of your time".

I travel quite a bit and have spent the last 3+ weeks in Louisiana where there is a mask mandate. I would say 20% of the people I saw there were wearing a mask. I am now 8 hours away in Texas where there is no mask mandate and easily 80% of the people I see are wearing them. After being in several different states over the last year, it still surprises me how different cities can be, even within the same state.

Yes ur right I got the first dose from pressure to be able to fly. Once I did my own research I never went back for the second. Biggest regret is getting the first dose and caving to pressure.

Ah, well, chin up. It just may save your life despite how you feel about it.
