This was a very interesting article, with embedded video of a family that has been slated in UK for quarantine. Looks like they did a short blog with photos too. It shows the quarters and the guy does a tour of where 80 people arrived at Arrowe Park Hospital on Friday night after flying to the UK from China for their quarantine.

Coronavirus quarantined patients are 'allowed outside'

• It was revealed on Thursday the Wirral teaching hospital would be used to keep the patients in isolation for 14 days after they returned from Wuhan, where the virus is believed to have originated. Staff were informed of the decision by hospital chief exec Janelle Holmes in a leaked memo on Thursday, just after 4pm.
• He said: "Every single thing that we have asked for we get. There is an army of people here who are looking after us extremely well. They are running out and buying everything.
• "'They've bought us televisions, radios. You name it. Anything we've asked for, they've bought for us." He added: "We being looked after to the absolute maximum that anyone could possibly expect." Television sets, blankets, toiletries and food could be seen in Mr Shaw's video, as well as tea. Families will be living in a former staff residence complex on the site of Arrowe Park hospital in Wirral.
• The 240-bed complex has en-suite bathrooms, communal lobbies and shared living rooms. It was built in 2006 at a cost of £7.4million.
  Families will be able to stay together, they won't be separated and meals will be provided for free.
• Kitchens and food will be made available for those who want to make their own meals. Mr Shaw said: "We're allowed to have contact with anyone in the facility, as long as we're wearing facial masks. In our own apartment, of course, we cant." Opening the window, he added: "We can go outside and get fresh air. The windows we can open."

Def important to share that info. I just can’t personally deal with it.

I’m expecting to see a shortage of masks next week At work.
Not working without one so hopefully employer is being proactive there. am skeptical of that though.

I’ve been wearing a paper mask daily since early October.
Have been questioned by several Medical staff as to why are you wearing that. Usually in whispers and out of plain nosiness. (I’m positive -see what I did there- I’ve been the subject of much giggles and gossip). Haven’t been sick all winter giggle all you want, yk?

And then. I get on the bus to go home and promptly realize I should have a mask for that. Lots of germs and hacking going on for public transport riders. Ick. I usually bury my mouth and nose in my coat. And rewash hands and phone when I get home.

12,024 cases now reported worldwide.
98.6% of the cases are within mainland China

134 cases are outside of China (The regions of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau combined have a total of 30 cases not included in the 134 figure).

Zero deaths have been reported outside of China. I hope it stays that way.

The 134 cases outside of China are spread over 23 countries. The highest number of cases outside of China, current as of latest update, are in:

Thailand: 19 cases. 7 recovered.
Singapore: 18 cases. All reported stable.
Japan: 17 cases + 2 cases diagnosed without symptoms.
Australia: 12 cases. 2 recovered.
South Korea: 12 cases.

This has nothing to do with the Coronavirus Global Health emergency.

These children died from regular flu, it happens every year to many thousands of people, esp the elderly, young and those will pre-existing health issues.

I think it's interesting info to compare/contrast to the current coronavirus news story.

People are scared of the new virus, which isn't spreading quickly outside of China (134 cases outside of China) and hasn't killed anyone, to date, outside of China. Meanwhile, the flu continues as it always does, spreading, infecting, killing.

It would be an awesome benefit if all the personal hygiene info and precautions against the coronavirus in turn prevent the flu from being as deadly this season! The same precautions will help with both - wash hands, don't touch face, cover cough/sneeze, stay home if sick.

"As the virus began to spread through Wuhan in early January, people who spoke out about it online were silenced by censors and, in some cases, held by the police. When journalists from Hong Kong — whose news media were among the first to shed light on the virus — visited a Wuhan hospital, police officers detained them for hours."

To me, the scariest part of this new virus is in that paragraph. Once the information was shared internationally, effective protocols were put in to stem the spread.

We don't want the virus to spread, we do want accurate information to be spread, and to be spread widely. Yay to every journalist, medical professional, and public health authority who made the information available. They are heroes, imo.

Agree, as a few times I have posted the comparative information to the flu on this thread.

Looking at it from a Global Perspective, the flu causes significant illness and death and impact to Global economies. Huge MOO. And there has never been a 100% targeted vaccine for the flu because it mutates too much.

With all the flu vaccine shots, look at all the deaths that occur, yet because of the mutations, they don't cover every mutation and is not 100% effective. Add to that of course many folks don't get the shots. So many deaths even though there is a flu vaccine shot . Cannot fathom the death toll if there wasn't a vaccine.

Coronavirus... I can't even Envision the numbers and deaths if there is not an eventual vaccine as the flu vaccine shot. But long ways away.

What in the world is done in the meantime?

As to contact tracing which is being done outside of China now, the individuals that are being monitored and tracked are guinea pigs/case studies to learn more about the virus for the future and its impact In addition to containing it. While diagnostic tests, treatments and vaccines are being worked on.

With over 11,000 documented infections in China, the countries that are isolating and quarantining and testing them and following them with serology Etc are going to be able to contribute to knowing more about this virus.

In the next couple of months, I don't see how they're going to be able to do anything other than track and let the virus Go free range in China as China cannot track and isolate as well as the countries where it has just appeared. MOO. Consider all the resources just to track the 400+ returning folks from Wuhan in the United States and the United Kingdom.

China criticizes U.S. border closure as coronavirus death toll rises
It is certainly not a gesture of goodwill, China's foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement Saturday.

“A U.S. ban on foreign nationals traveling into the country if they have visited China in the last two weeks is "neither based on facts, nor helpful," Chinese officials said Saturday.”

On PA-leeeease. What are we supposed to do? Take the chance of becoming Wuhan the second? There are still a lot of unknowns and countries have to take their precautionary measures. That’s a fact IMo MOO

In the White House Briefing it was mentioned SEVERAL times how much we are trying to help China. The official expressed their goodwill and sympathies for China several times in that White House Briefing and states several actions The US is taking to assist.

Grrr.

ETA: The US clearly explained why we/they are doing this—many reasons explained but one is that this will help relieve the already overloaded check points, etc etc.

We learned from the WHO that China has released the sequence of the virus (and other countries likely can get that on their own now that the virus is out in the world), and I'm assuming that means a vaccine will be effective as it will be targeted directly to it....unless/until the virus mutates.

I have to say, I'm impressed with the international response, not only by countries but by individuals who comply with the protocols. Accurate information is a great medical tool.

(And I probably owe an apology to my sister who works in Infection Control for all the teasing and eye-rolling I have done over the years making fun of her precautionary actions. Sorry, Sis, and keep up the good work!)

How long are they saying to develop a vaccine ? I know earliest articles I read said like a year. I’m guessing that might be on more a faster track. Now if possible ? Though there has to be trials etc etc so that’s got to take time.

So if I have this right. So far the only Canadians out are the Diplomats and Family. Folks who secured the last flight out. It appears that's been it so far. IMO there are underlying reasons for China not giving immediate permission to get these planes in

The video I saw said clinical trials can hopefully be expected this summer/in a few months, but most estimates I’ve seen are putting it at a year out.

One thing which is good though is that this “timeline” for a vaccine is “unprecedented” (exact quote I recall from a scientist). Since the genetic code from China has been released, everything is accelerated.
