PLEASE someone tell me that the article posted above re: people throwing their cats and dogs off towers is fake news. PLEASE.

ETA: I said in thread 1 that it gets worse and worse, every update. That was an understatement.

And now there has been the biggest spike yet, it seems, per NYT article above.

I hear ya Greg. Absolutely. We know how much you love your cat. :)

Please still pass the Valium though.

ETA: @gregjrichards , Winston right? :)

I wish I could tell you that article was fake news the photos at the link have left me traumatised. It has been horrific and horrendous seeing these images and the ones in the markets. My cat Winston is going to be 11 this month and I love him as a family member I could never imagine causing him any harm.

I cant do the animal/pet stuff. I just cant. I appreciate the posts tho as to what the he77 is really going on.

I totally understand. Hopefully the message is getting out that the cats and dogs are not spreading the virus and also there is no government cull going on.

How long are they saying to develop a vaccine ? I know earliest articles I read said like a year. I’m guessing that might be on more a faster track. Now if possible ? Though there has to be trials etc etc so that’s got to take time.

I wish there was a way to speed the process up but they have to be really careful about checking the safety of the vaccine before giving it to humans.

US companies suspend China operations, restrict travel as coronavirus outbreak becomes global crisis

“Most of the economic cost of the outbreak “is not related to the virus,” said CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council Gloria Guevara, who was the tourism minister for Mexico during the H1N1 outbreak. “It’s related to the panic,” and it can take between ten months and 19 months for tourism and spending in an area to fully recover from a local outbreak.”

So speaking of Mexico, we haven’t seen cases in Mexico and South America yet, knock on wood.

Wondering.....How much of the world’s ingredients for medicine come from China?

Good question and there is much on the subject on google. A couple articles:

FOX:
America too dependent on China for its medicine, experts warn

“Experts are warning America has become too dependent on China for its medicine -- everything from painkillers, to antibiotics, and even aspirin can all be sourced back to a country the Department of Defense considers an adversary.

The Food and Drug Administration estimates that at least 80 percent of the active ingredients found in all of America's medicines come from abroad – primarily China.

"Imagine if China turned off that spigot," said Rosemary Gibson, author of "China RX: The Risks of America's Dependence on China for Medicine." "China's aim is to become the global pharmacy to the world -- it says that. It wants to disrupt, to dominate, and displace American and other Western companies."”

U.S. officials worried about Chinese control of American drug supply

“Basically we've outsourced our entire industry to China," retired Brig. Gen. John Adams told NBC News. "That is a strategic vulnerability.”

Antibiotics, which turn life-threatening infections into minor nuisances, are considered the single biggest advance in modern medicine.

But imagine if the supply of antibiotics to the United States was suddenly cut off.

American national security officials are worrying about that scenario as they come to grips with this little understood fact: The vast majority of key ingredients for drugs that many Americans rely on are manufactured abroad, mostly in China.

As the U.S. defense establishment grows increasingly concerned about China's potentially hostile ambitions, the pharmaceutical supply chain is receiving new scrutiny.

"If China shut the door on exports of medicines and their key ingredients and raw material, U.S. hospitals and military hospitals and clinics would cease to function within months, if not days," said Rosemary Gibson, author of a book on the subject, "China Rx."

Or, Gibson told NBC News, China could potentially "weaponize our medicines. They can sell us medicines without any medicine in them. They can sell medicines that have lethal contaminants in it.””

Will be accelerated for sure MOO, as even what I posted upthread this am, one of the California folks has been given something unproven under the ruling allowed due to WHO declaration. That wouldn't probably have been allowed unless the WHO did that declaration. IIRC, that allows countries to give a "compassionate exception" for novel drugs/treatments in addition to government fundings which are then released by law/agreement with WHO MOO. That's just come to mind when responding here as to compassionate exclusions for drugs going to market, perhaps others here will have to look into, and I think we'll be reading more about such in the next weeks in MSM.

I'm with ya! It's just some things that set you off, and pet cruelty is one which I will quickly just fly by and not read... I cannot handle it also. Don't F *ck with Cats! I don't want to break down crying again in the grocery store as I did last week for sure and posted about here. But, it may happen to you or I again as emotions just build up in us and let out when our bodies cannot handle anymore.

I wish USA would bring back more manufacturing here. Wishful thinking, I suppose, but it does feel vulnerable when a world-wide situation arises. Food, medicine, just plain ol' stuff....wish it were more local while still being part of global trade. Seems like a patriotic thing to do....without getting isolationist about it

That's all probably OT!

Morning y'all.

Can't bear to read the link wrt to pets.
As the thread becomes dismal will have to digest
In small portions.

Is anyone here optimistic about containment
or is the virus out of the box, so to speak?

Great question, tadpole.

Short answer: IMO everyone is doing everything they can do, to the best of their abilities. The responsive is massive, and so much has been learned from SARS and other outbreaks to help with the situation at hand. The various measures being taken IMO will help to control spread, but IMO it will get worse and it IS out of the box. Jmo.

I have been personally involved with this subject heavily for the long time now. I wish I could go into more detail. Let’s just say metaphorically that I’ve written books on the subject, America’s dependence on China and the various issues associated with it.

I will say that until the mindset of American consumers changes, as far as willingness to pay more and exerting the initiative to be more productive...

Maybe this is the turning point.

Everything is JMO.

MOO it's out of the box as to containment in China. It's a wild virus that's going to run it's course from 41 cases Jan 11 to over 12,000 now. MOO there is no way in heck they can do contact studies for all those folks. Not enough resources.

The priorities by WHO are #1 diagnosis testing (working on), #2 treatments (starting with a few, a California pt. is one I read/posted above), and #3 is vaccine. There are companies which have been pre-contracted by the US DOD and other agencies to ramp up. This is a biggggggggggg ramp up for any company even though they are supposed to be prepared. MOO

They can slow it down and have resources to try to contain outside of China I think in MAJOR industrial countries because numbers are so low. Gosh forbid if this ends up in a third world country that doesn't have the capabilities and resources to catch and monitor and follow and treat and isolate etc.

But the word that many might be thinking but no one has ever mentioned is eradication. Not gonna happen MOO.

It's a new world virus. Will it be like SARS and go pretty much poof in the world? That would be the best case for sure. Doubt it due to the lengthy incubation and transmission without symptoms we have had read recently. Subject to change as we are only 3 weeks into international involvement and understanding.

What REALLY makes me reconsider outbreak is those cases from places that don't catch patient zero in their community outside of China as they aren't screened to be even tested as they had no history in their city or history of coming from China in the last 14 days.

How that taxi driver got diagnosed so quickly, WOW! He fits the perfect bill for secondary contact spreading... within 2 meters more than 15 minutes.

That they were exposed to a healthy infected asymptomatic person. This I think will happen sooner or later, somewhere.

One thing that gives me a little comfort is that according to some things I’ve seen and read, this virus itself is comparatively less medically severe than SARS and MERS, though it obviously is still deadly and dangerous.

Someone was asking upthread when the first cases appeared in December. I just came across the Jan 11 WHO update on this that says December 8th was first symptom onset that was confirmed as 2019nCoV.

Weird to look back just to January 11th, 20 days ago when reported

"The cluster was initially reported on 31 December 2019, when the WHO China Country Office was informed. The Chinese authorities identified a new type of coronavirus (novel coronavirus, nCoV), which was isolated on 7 January 2020. .... According to information conveyed to WHO by Chinese authorities on 11 and 12 January, 41 cases with novel coronavirus infection have been preliminarily diagnosed in Wuhan City. Of the 41 cases reported, seven are severely ill. This is when the one death, mentioned above, was reported, in a patient with other underlying health conditions. Six patients have been discharged from hospital. Symptom onset of the 41 confirmed nCoV cases ranges from 8 December 2019 to 2 January 2020. No additional cases have been detected since 3 January 2020. "

There were just 41 confirmed cases at that time blows my mind.

For those that want to read how far this has come, here's the reference of the update from that day
Novel Coronavirus – China

And here are the daily situation reports listing since January 21st. Just 10 days ago they started daily WHO reports.
Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) situation reports

I have been waiting to see if Mexico will close their border from North America. If this disease continues, one could easily understand if Central and South America expects Mexico to maintain border security.

Note to google Mexico and how prepared they are.

Last night I read a scientific report from ???? and it had projections, due to China flights, where it may appear. I can't find which link as I read so much last night.

I would love to read this if you can remember.

If advanced countries can’t contain the virus, it’s gonna be a rocky road for under developed ones.

Yes, this is what the WHO director stated, his concern for those countries whose health infrastructures are not as good, that the PHEIC is due not to China alone, but because of the other countries.
