Was the animal cull (dog) related to a fear that the virus spreads through mammals, meaning people needed to kill house pets to prevent the spread of disease n China?

There is conflicting stories about the cull because the health authority in China made a statement saying there is no evidence that coronavirus can be spread by cats and dogs. People were throwing their pets off balconies because of the false rumour that they could spread the disease. We don’t know for sure if there is a cull going on.

That's what I've been thinking.

When they started building new hospitals in record time, alarms went off. Surround communities and towns are guarding entry at gun point. Quarantining on military bases, islands and cruise ships indicates more that an epidemic. Imo...Facts, photos and social media reports don't match what the government is reporting.

Are only counting deaths of tested and verified cases?

Could this be a "super" virus, able to host in any mammal? Coronavirus appears extremely contagious.

If that is true in over-populated China, and there are only this small number of total deaths reported during a period of over a month, why are the crematoriums overworked?

I think so. Never in my life have I thought about putting aside food for a month, and I felt like a fool buying too much food until I saw that the hand sanitizer shelves were bare. Then I realized that I am not alone, even though there is no risk in my world.

My husband brought up an interesting question, what could be happening in North Korea?

Africa and South America are similarly silent. Russia was silent for too long as well. Perhaps North Korea borders are indeed secure and so one from China, Hong Kong, Philippine, or South Korea can cross the border.

Did you guys see the "accidentally" leaked, real numbers? The article came out yesterday and it's nearly at 25,000 deaths.

A good news story in the midst of this horror:

A British man who has been providing video updates on social media of his time on the quarantined Diamond Princess has urged concerned loved ones of passengers to get in touch so he can make sure they're alright.

David Abel has posted regularly about conditions on the cruise ship since passengers onboard were diagnosed with the coronavirus.

His updates have been drawing international attention, and Mr Abel thanked everybody for their comments and well-wishes.

In his latest video, posted this morning, he noted that many people getting in touch with him had expressed concerns about elderly or lonesome loved ones on board the ship, which is currently off the coast near Yokohama, Japan.
"I'm asking you to please let me know their names and their cabin numbers," he said.

Would the Chinese government be able to keep a death toll like 25,000 a secret if it was true? That’s a massive number of people.

I have a lot of questions about that. Do they have enough test kit capacity to have tested so many cases to return that number of confirmed infections given that some tests will return negative?

If that's the true death toll, why isn't that suspected cases far higher than even the elevated count on that screenshot?

If that's the true number of confirmed cases, then how many cases are out there that haven't been confirmed? That number of deceased would suggest a mortality rate up to 7%, which doesn't appear to be borne out by the figures from outside Hubei or outside China?

I would be interested to hear what epidemiologists are thinking about the numbers in general, and about these numbers in the screenshot.

Whether those numbers are correct or not, I am thinking it's more and more likely for a pandemic to be declared soon. The numbers on the cruise ship docked in Japan are terrible. There was a lot of spread just from one index case in Bavaria. We have no idea if many countries in Africa that have daily planes from China are even checking for the new Coronavirus.

On the other hand, current figures for places like the UK and US are very encouraging.

2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

Transcript and audiofilefor CDC Telebriefing: CDC Update on Novel Coronavirus
Press Briefing 12:15 pm Wednesday, February 5, 2020

  • This is the beginning of what could be a long response. Right now we’re aggressively intervening to contain introduction into the United States. If community spread in the US is established, we’ll implement broader measures to mitigate the impact of the virus on our communities.
Snipped by me. I wonder what kind of broader measures they're referring to?

A fifth case of the deadly coronavirus has been confirmed in Queensland, bringing the nation’s total to 15.

A 37-year-old Chinese national, who was travelling as part of a tour group in Australia, has tested positive for the virus and is in isolation at the Gold Coast University Hospital, Queensland Health said in a statement.

“All five people who have been confirmed to have novel coronavirus are stable,” it said.

10 more cases on the 10 already infected from the ship = 20

Google translation might help
Feb 06 @ 09:01

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, as a result of conducting a virus test on people with symptoms and their close contacts on a cruise ship on which a Hong Kong man infected with the new coronavirus was on board, 10 people were infected.

Newly confirmed. So far, a total of 20 passengers have been confirmed infected with this cruise ship.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, quarantine of about 3,700 passengers and all crew members were carried out on board the cruise ship Diamond Princess, and 120 people who had symptoms such as fever and cough, We have collected specimens from a total of 273 persons, including 153 persons who have been in close contact, and conducted virus tests sequentially.

On the 6th, results for 71 new cases were found, and 10 of them were confirmed to have been infected with the virus.

The cruise ship will be berthing at the port of Yokohama, and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare will send 10 newly infected individuals to medical institutions in Kanagawa Prefecture.

As a result, the number of infected passengers on the cruise ship has been confirmed to be 20 including the 10 confirmed on the 5th.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has been requesting that approximately 3,700passengers and crew members remaining on board the ship be kept on board, and in principle stay in the cabin for 14 days, as the inspection continues.

Trying to catch up on the thread, so apologies if already discussed...

As sad as this situation is with so many quarantined on this ship, I believe this controlled environment will end up producing invaluable data regarding this virus. Hopefully the researchers can use the data in such a way that this terrible event will provide some enlightenment.

Or perhaps I’m just looking for a “silver lining” amongst the multitude of heartbreaking stories.

It does sounds like they had no clue. But they certainly should have (JMO). It was already known to be an outbreak in China by the time he flew in to San Jose airport in the US.

The does concern me that if, at the end of January, the US medical caregivers were not already screening for CV, then how many people were seen in emergency rooms and regular doctor offices where the staff didn’t screen for CV?

And then my next thought is, how many people in end of January were seen for “flu-like symptoms” and then, as is often the case, told to go home and come back if they get worse.... but CV was never suspected or mentioned. Because medical caregivers were not on alert.

ETA: In other words- potential that there were people sick with CV who did seek care for flulike symptoms and then went home and no one was the wiser.... and they exposed a ton of people.

^^^ THIS ^^^

If a scenario such as this hasn’t already occurred, I believe that it will. It only takes 1 !! And with the mass quantity of confirmed cases around the world, it’s statistically probable that not all cases will be identified and contained.

New York City tests 5 people for potential coronavirus

The NYC Department of Health said it now has five “patients under investigation” for the virus and is awaiting test results on four of them from the CDC. “This means they had recently been in China and presented with fever and cough or shortness of breath without another common cause, like influenza and other respiratory viruses, identified through testing,” the agency said in a statement.

The two new potential patients are both under 40. One has been hospitalized and the other is under isolation with daily monitoring by the health department.

3 Americans on quarantined cruise ship test positive for coronavirus

Three people from the United States are among 20 cases of the Wuhan coronavirus that have been confirmed in passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined off Japan.

Their cases were identified through health screenings of all guests and crew by the Japanese Ministry of Health. They have been taken off the vessel and transported to local hospitals.

The Diamond Princess is anchored off the coast of Yokohama, near Tokyo, with 1,045 crew and 2,666 passengers on board -- including 428 Americans.

Officials are still waiting for the results of 171 tests.

Chinese official: Suspending flights to China is "neither cool-headed nor rational"

“I must stress that certain countries’ ill-advised decisions to suspend flights to and from China are neither cool-headed nor rational," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.

"China is strongly concerned and dissatisfied. We hope relevant countries will bear in mind overall relations and people’s interests and resume normal operation of flights to guarantee normal people-to-people exchange and cooperation."

KLM and Air France suspend all flights to mainland China over coronavirus

Dutch airline KLM has temporarily suspended all flights to mainland China as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The airline plans to resume flights to Beijing and Shanghai on March 16 on alternate days, with a connection from Amsterdam to mainland China.

KLM’s daily flights to Beijing and Shanghai are to resume March 29, but for the time being, services to Chengdu, Hangzhou and Xiamen will remain suspended up to and including 28 March.

Air France has also extended its suspension to Shanghai and Beijing -- which started at the end of January -- until March 15.

Air France said in a statement it plans to alternate one daily flight to both cities with KLM “depending on the evolution of the situation.” It plans to resume a normal flight schedule, including to and from Wuhan, from March 29.
