But Hubei -- known for its car factories and bustling capital Wuhan -- is paying the price, with the mortality rate for coronavirus patients there 3.1%, versus 0.16% for the rest of China.

“If the province was not sealed off, some people would have gone all around the country to try to get medical help, and would have turned the whole nation into an epidemic-stricken area,” said Yang Gonghuan, former deputy director general of China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention. “The quarantine brought a lot of hardship to Hubei and Wuhan, but it was the right thing to do.”...

Heartbreaking. These poor innocent souls. I don't think I can even imagine the suffering and the feeling of abandonment these people must be enduring.

I’m reading this article for the second time. I came across it again while looking for influenza death stats in China. I am finding it an interesting read in light of all this.

Almost a dozen infants and nearly 80 children are among hundreds of Australians who were on board an evacuation flight from Wuhan to Darwin today.

A spokesperson from the Health Department confirmed to 9News 266 passengers were on board the flight, which touched down in Darwin just before midday.

Of those, 178 are adults, which include a 90 year old, who requires a wheelchair.

Eleven are infants and 77 are children.

One of the last planes carrying US citizens has landed at Eppley Airfield and have arrived at Camp Ashland. The group of 57 plus the airline crew are healthy and doing well. Apparently even the airline crew will be quarantined.

Something else I think would be in short supply during an epidemic of this (compounded by being at the peak time in the Northern Hemisphere for flu/pneumonia) would be ventilators. Surely that must be having an effect on the mortality rate in Hubei?

Holding nose to release pressure in ears, Which I counted seven times that I had to do.
Keypad check in at kiosk -use knuckles
Buckling belt - hands touching where doubtful has been cleaned
Opening and Closing potty door in public restroom
Tray table up and down
Etc etc

I only saw one airport worker wearing a mask, and he was Janitorial. I only saw one person on the flight plane wearing a mask.
A mass transit, I saw just one single individual wearing a mask.

As I've stated before, I live in a city and state where it has not come yet.

Yes, I saw a video explaining about acute respiratory distress syndrome and how many resources they need to do ventilation, For equipment and for people to monitor continuous to do such correctly. It's the thing between life and death for many that get this disease in the later terms. There's just no way they have the resources in Wuhan to do such for all the people that may be needing it. And all the hospital rooms that would be needed 2 have the equipment and negative pressure isolation rooms. MOO

Would ventilators be the same thing as mechanical apparatus mentioned in the most recent WHO conference? That there’s a shortage of the equipment but also the people trained to use them, hence the new WHO training course which starts in March that has had many (1000ish) registrants?

An Associated Press analysis of domestic travel patterns using map location data from Chinese tech giant Baidu shows that in the two weeks before Wuhan’s lockdown, nearly 70% of trips out of the central Chinese city were within Hubei province. Baidu has a map app that is similar to Google Maps, which is blocked in China.

Another 14% of the trips went to the neighboring provinces of Henan, Hunan, Anhui and Jiangxi. Nearly 2% slipped down to Guangdong province, the coastal manufacturing powerhouse across from Hong Kong, and the rest fanned out across China. The cities outside Hubei province that were top destinations for trips from Wuhan between Jan. 10 and Jan. 24 were Chongqing, a municipality next to Hubei province, Beijing and Shanghai.

Six more people aboard a cruise ship quarantined in Japan have tested positive for novel coronavirus, bringing the total on the Diamond Princess to 70, Japan’s health ministry said Sunday.

The ministry said one of the six confirmed cases is a woman in her 70s who has Hong Kong residency, but is also a U.S. citizen. That brings the total number of American passengers who were confirmed to have the virus to 14.
