For years, economists have warned that China is a super power that can cause havock to world markets.
I was brought up to believe, the bigger they are...the harder they fall.
I think that we are seeing in real time, the fruition of this statement.
China depends heavily on it's exports. Their huge shipping industry is dead in the water. Few countries want Chinese imports right now, or in the near future due to fears that the virus can transmit on anything! Pork, computers, cell phones, you name it. Because nobody in the world knows how this virus can contaminate. Better safe then sorry in this instance.
China depends on tourism. What tourism is happening now? Really? Hey honey, tickets are cheap to China. Let's go and take a gamble as to wheter we'll be dragged out of room and sent to an internment camp! A memorable trip of a lifetime!
In my opinion, and apparently most world leaders, China is lying about the severity of this outbreak.
Big time. Back to the beginning of my post.
The bigger they are the harder they fall.
China will not be a threat to the world's economics for a very long time.
With that said. My heart breaks for the hardworking, good people of China who are caught up in this mess.
Truly, my heart breaks for these innocents.

Yes but that’s going to affect the entire world. You can’t have an economic superpower fall without a domino effect. The economy doesn’t stop at most borders.

No ordering on touch screens in McDonald’s either for me. I despise them you have no idea where people’s hands have been and then you have to eat your food with your hands - yuck!

Me too. A vile invention.

Mass wedding in S Korea defies coronavirus fears
''Thousands of couples have attended a mass wedding held by the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, also known as the Unification Church, in South Korea.

The ceremony was held at the Cheongshim Peace World Centre in Gapyeongin near the capital Seoul despite fears the event could help spread the coronavirus outbreak that originated in Wuhan in China.

South Korea has confirmed 24 cases of the coronavirus - the latest a South Korean airlifted from Wuhan last week.''

Thanks for the article on the salt mask. Very interesting and its great they are starting to build a better mousetrap.

Hopefully we will see these on sale soon.

A week or so ago, there was an article about someone claiming to use some sort of herbal ointment to rub inside the nostrils to prevent infections, and at first I brushed it off, but after further thoughts, I think there maybe something to that or at least rub something on inside that is known to help prevent infection. I think there may be products or cremes that can help and be used like that.

I came up with my own thought of using Vicks Vapor rub jelly on inside of nose but I have no idea if that would do any good. I just like smell of it because it reminds me of my Mom taking care of me when I was sick as a child. :)

I swab my nostrils with listerine after being out in public where there’s lots of people. And gargle with listerine nightly (when I remember). Making sure it’s sitting at the back of my throat for 30 seconds.

Communism is alive and well.....even if the people are not.

Chen Qiushi, a citizen journalist who had been doing critical reporting from Wuhan, the central Chinese city at the epicenter of the outbreak, went missing on Thursday evening, just as hundreds of thousands of people in China began demanding freedom of speech online.

Friends and family later found out from the police that he had been forced into quarantine. By Sunday, Chen's disappearance had started to gain traction on Weibo, China's Twitter-like platform, with many pleading for his release.

In the last few hours the Qingdao public security officers and state security officers ... notified Qiushi's parents that Qiushi has already been detained in the name of quarantine. Qiushi's mother immediately asked them where and when he was taken away, they declined to say," said Xu.

He spoke out about the Wuhan virus. Now his family and friends fear he's been silenced

Yes. We can complain about how our “rights” can be taken away by our own government (for Americans) in relation to controlling the spread of the virus but this kind of thing isn’t done to citizens in the US.

I'm a bit worried, a colleague of mine returned from her month long holiday (Australia / Bali with Hong Kong stop overs) on 25th Jan. She returned to work Mon 27th Jan.
Just last week she tells us her travelling companion had become unwell / was taken to hospital last week and is being tested for Coronavirus . My colleague stated last Friday that she was starting to feel unwell also, our office isn't the biggest and I'm feeling a bit nervous.

Is she still coming to work?

Hadn’t heard that either.

I just found this:
Obesity may also impact flu transmission, not just severity of illness

“Obesity increases a person's risk for severe complications from influenza, including hospitalization and even death.”

This is just about influenza mind you, but I guess there could be some truth to saying obesity would create increased risk for Coronavirus (?)

I’m not a doctor, but it does seem a bit of a stretch for the Mexican official to want to highlight this to the public (although again, article about the flu). Seems like they would also want to state that smokers are more susceptible, or people who drink too much, etc. - I could come with a few other things that would in general seem to create a weak immune system. But again, IANAD, so MOO.

That article also is interesting in that it states obese people apparently shed more virus. At least with flu.

ETA: highlighting article is about flu, not CV

MOO.

Being obese has a similar effect on organs as smoking and other unhealthful behaviors so it makes sense that it can lower immunity. That’s a lot of pressure on organs.

Poverty inexplicably can have that effect as sugar and refined carbs can be cheaper than protein, complex carbs, fresh fruits and veggies.
Wish that got as much attention as the current virus.

Didn't realize the Moonie cult was still so active. I don't think they're as popular in the US as they once were.

JMO, I question some countries reporting on the number of cases of the new coronavirus within their borders. Russia is only reporting 2 cases?

I'm also a massive fatty, ******* hell RIP me then

I have asthma so I’m in the same boat. If I got this I couldn’t survive. The flu can easily kill me too. So I get a lot of vaccines and get paranoid about people coughing or sneezing around me. I will run, put my face over my nose and mouth, move where I’m sitting, etc.

I was thinking the same thing when I read about the mass weddings! It wasn’t linked but I thought it had to be the Moonies. They’re still around?

There is one country that is (unsurprisingly) quiet about CV: North Korea.

They may not have an impact on us, but from a humanitarian standpoint, I wonder...

Understanding the China-North Korea Relationship (Council on Foreign Relations)

China is North Korea’s most important trading partner. It has helped sustain Kim Jong-un’s regime, and has opposed harsh international sanctions on North Korea in the hope of avoiding regime collapse and a refugee influx across their 870-mile border.“...

“The two countries have expanded physical links in recent years. In September 2015, they opened a bulk-cargo and container shipping route to boost North Korea’s export of coal to China, and China established a high-speed rail route between the Chinese border city of Dandong and Shenyang, the provincial capital of China’s northeastern Liaoning Province. The same year, the Guomenwan border trade zone opened in Dandong with the intention of bolstering bilateral economic exchanges...”

And I apologize, I’m posting way too much here...:( and sounding too much of an alarmist.

@Medstudies, please keep posting at full speed !

As a fellow “melodramatic alarmist”, I, unfortunately, haven’t had the time to keep up with all the new details the way I would like to, but you have represented us well !! And I for one appreciate it !!

At the same time, I also feel the need to express my gratitude to @Amonet (among others) for contributing from a level headed more optimistic view. Your view points probably won’t keep me from falling into a “Conspiracy Theory Alarmists Black Hole” - but each of your posts forces me to pause and re-evaluate, therefore slowing my decent!

In short, I hope everyone continues to post at full speed. Personally, I’ve gained knowledge and/or insight from nearly every post on this thread!!

I honestly don’t know of any other website I could go to that would provide raw data, human interest discussions, varying (and sometimes opposing) view points, etc,.. Combine that with bits of humor, cordial discussions, and the appreciation most of us have for differing opinions....

I’ll just say this platform is very unique, and this group has been awesome!!

Certainly hope the test is negative. Seems it's going to crop up in places we don't suspect.

Yeah, the scariest new information is the virus is shed before and after ... while they are asymptomatic before symptoms and after they have recovered. So much for screening for symptoms. And fever

Do you have a link regarding the virus being shed after they have recovered? I haven’t seen that info yet and I would love to learn more about it.
TIA
