So are the masks everyone is wearing useless?

They're not useless, but they're not foolproof either. They prevent you from touching your nose or mouth (and you should also avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands). They offer some protection, just not full protection. And they won't help much of people don't wash their hands during the day, or if someone rolls down the mask and coughs or sneezes into their hands.

I have read that the respirator type are definitely better for preventing virus spread. The thinner masks need changing every now and then, and they can get moist from our breath and lose some of their protective ability in that way. But even they will stop someone from directly touching their hands and mouth, and hopefully provide a reminder to not touch the face at all while the mask is worn.

I wouldn't be surprised if the people repatriated from Wuhan are asked to self-isolate for 2 weeks following their return. They should also be given a number to call if they do get cold/flu symptoms so that they can be tested for the new coronavirus.
And we know how well that works. Remember some of those exposed to Ebola running around, even going to pick up food from a restaurant?

And they are pretty much sold out if you look (I did). I guess we just have to hope an immune system does its job.

Wuhan coronavirus: Thousands of cases confirmed as China goes into emergency mode - CNN

The video at the above link (Ground Zero : Wuhan) says the virus is likely to mutate.

—-

“Thailand and Hong Kong have each reported eight cases of infection; the United States, Taiwan, Australia and Macau have five each; Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia each have reported four; France has three; Vietnam has two, and Nepal has one.

There have been no deaths from the virus reported outside China.”

There are a lot of points on the genome where it can mutate. Mutations on different points would have different effects. Some might make the virus more dangerous to us in some way (more contagious, virulent or deadly) but they can also have the opposite effect.

Of the first 31 possible cases in the UK, none tested positive. Most of the countries with positive tests have ten times more who tested negative. So if someone does get off a plane from Wuhan (which I believe have been stopped for four or five days) and get some cold/flu symptoms it still seems more likely that they have a cold or flu. They should report their symptoms and get tested if doctors think that's necessary, but it's not a foregone conclusion that they have the new coronavirus, and definitely not that they're going to die from it.

The symptoms of this corona virus (at least initial ones) sure resemble those of the common cold. Which I don't know how many people have right now (but a lot). People coughing all over the place. And some of those who get of the plane from Wuhan will have the corona virus.

Fortunately no one did get infected with Ebola in that way in the US. It turned out that particular virus is a lot more transmissable the further along the disease is in a patient.

This one, they're saying, can be passed on before symptoms occur, so it's more concerning in that way.

Yep, this virus is different in that it appears that it can be transmitted before the patient even shows symptoms. If they evacuate the people from Wuhan here, they better figure out how to stop the virus spreading.

Yes, but they should still be isolated if they contact a doctor or the ER, and most of them will come turn out to have a cold or flu.

Well they like eating Bat and snakes so I’m sure their is loads of wild animals they can turn to in tough times
Isn't that what caused this virus to spread to people to begin with?

It's not yet known which animal was the direct vector from animal-to-human.

The family of coronaviruses that both SARS and this new coronavirus belong to do tend to have a bat reservoir. However, with SARS it went from bats into civet cats and then to humans. This one might also have something else in between the bats and humans.

I don’t know how anyone could eat them I would rather die of starvation.

“Mayor Zhou Xianwang said in an interview with the state broadcaster CCTV that he and Ma Guoqiang, the city’s party secretary, would resign to “appease public indignation.”

Mr. Zhou said he and Mr. Ma would take responsibility for the crisis.

“Our names will live in infamy, but as long as it is conducive to the control of the disease and to the people’s lives and safety, Comrade Ma Guoqiang and I will bear any responsibility,” Mr. Zhou said in the interview.

Medical workers in the city have accused the local government of reacting too slowly to the crisis, and residents have used social media to complain about an impromptu ban on travel that has made getting access to food and health care difficult.

The mayor defended the travel ban enacted last week, which effectively cut off the city of 11 million people. He called the restriction “unprecedented in human history.””

Dr. Oz on coronavirus outbreak: Chinese leaders' new comments 'alarming'

“Oz said it's "concerning" to hear that 80 deaths have been confirmed, and there are "definitely" thousands of more cases yet to be confirmed. He said the youngest and oldest are being most affected, which is typical for such a viral outbreak.

"It's also alarming, this is the big news today, the Chinese leadership is starting to say 'this incubation period is a lot longer than we thought,'" he said, adding that it appears that someone who catches the new coronavirus can be contagious for weeks before even realizing they're sick.

"That would change the infectious nature of this. It does seem like once you've got the virus, you do seem to infect more people than usual," he added.”

Random thought, I wonder if Corona Beer sales will take a hit, considering the conscious and subconscious factors proven to be associated with advertising.

2nd presumptive case of coronavirus in Toronto, wife of first patient
''Public health officials in Ontario are reporting a second presumptive case of the new coronavirus.

They said the wife of the man who became the first case of the illness in Canada has also tested positive for the virus.

The province said the woman has been in self-isolation since arriving in Toronto with her husband last week.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams said Monday the woman tested positive for the virus at Ontario’s public health laboratory.''

“Given the fact that she has been in self-isolation, the risk to Ontarians remains low.”

''The province is expected to provide an update on the situation at 11:30 a.m. on Monday.

Public health officials have said the woman’s husband, a man in his 50s, had been showing mild symptoms on his flight from Guangzhou, China, to Toronto.

They’ve since been reaching out to those aboard the China Southern Airlines flight who sat within two metres of the man''

Confirmed Wuhan cases 2700 (or more). How and where do you treat that many people? How can you isolate that many?

What difference would it make if the mayor resigned? Maybe he just wants the heck out of there.
