Coronavirus: Death toll rises to 56, almost 2,000 cases confirmed in China

Notably, SARS, which infected around 8,000 people and killed around 800, seemed to run its course and then mostly disappear. It wasn't a vaccine that turned the tide on the disease but rather effective communication between nations and a range of tools that helped track the disease and its spread.

"We learnt that epidemics can be controlled without drugs or vaccines, using enhanced surveillance, case isolation, contact tracking, PPE and infection control measures," MacIntyre said.

What is the possibility of false negatives? If the first test (24 hours) is positive it then goes on to a second lab test (36 hours). If the first test is negative then there isn't a second test.

Clinical Criteria: Evaluating 2019-nCoV PUIs | CDC

Plethora of information at this Centers for Disease Control in the United States site, which is updated almost daily, and this tab at this site about testing.

At this time, diagnostic testing for 2019-nCoV can be conducted only at CDC. (I'm only speaking to cases in the US). Screening for samples to be sent for testing includes

Fever1 and symptoms of lower respiratory illness (e.g., cough, difficulty breathing) AND
In the last 14 days before symptom onset, a history of travel from Wuhan City, China.– or –In the last 14 days before symptom onset, close contact2 with a person who is under investigation for 2019-nCoV while that person was ill -or- In the last 14 days, close contact2 with an ill laboratory-confirmed 2019-nCoV patient.

It takes time for the samples to be sent to the Centers for Disease Control for testing, so there will be lags of time when folks are isolated versus when they are diagnosed. Right now they are able to screen so closely because the date now is so close to the epicenter of Hunan outbreak. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out if it's a possibility. Right now, unless you have been to Hunan or you have been exposed to somebody sick from Hunan or under investigation, you are good to go.

Coronavirus outbreak: Latest news and live updates - CNN

Multiple articles at one link giving hour by hour updates for those that want to follow.

All MOO below based on readings and updates.

It appears a backlash to the government trying to quarantine of folks, which has shown is among the #1 ways to prevent the outbreak from spreading. Giving so much publicity and educating folks of the dangers and symptoms to the general public (another of the #1 ways to help prevent the outbreak from spreading) is causing so much anxiety from folks. Health organizations are trying to contain as they know that for every person who gets infected, it can spread and be more difficult to track and stop the spread. (Think SARS, which infected around 8,000 people and killed around 800 before it was under control without having vaccines...was all isolation and management and education and prevention)

And yes, it indeed may be very possible to spread before any symptoms appear, that they can get through the airport screening (which screens for fever and a cough) therefore the need to publicize so widely for the world to help educated folks and to track the individuals who now have carried it into distant countries...... which has created anxiety and hysteria among many.

The airports and other mass transit has been shut down in the epicenter in China, there are now 15 cities that are on full or partial lockdown in China, Beijing announced on Sunday that the city will postpone the start of the spring semester for all schools in the city, and many governments, including Britiain, Japan, France, US, India etc are trying to negotiate for specific chartered planes to take folks out that want to.

Paris has just cancelled their Lunar New Year parade within the Chinese community. My guess, they don't want someone who was asymptomatic that may have flown in from the epicenter to later go to this parade and unknowingly spread the virus further in their country. Unfortunate, yet smart move MOO. In the "virus community of health professionals", France is one of the tops for investigations and knowledge (think of Pasteur Institute, which is up there with CDC US and WHO), MOO.

OMG CNN just reported that the virus can spread TWO WEEKS before symptoms show. We (the world) are in deep trouble.

" – and information about this virus is constantly evolving -- for about two weeks, people who don’t even know they’re sick can spread the virus, which has killed more than 50 people in China and infected thousands." China says virus can spread before symptoms show -- calling into question US strategy to contain virus

Which is exactly my concern I posted about earlier. This is going to be a nightmare to contain.

Yes, especially when known that the "bird flu/H1N1 flu" came from Chinese zoonotic sources (that is what they are thinking this is from also, wild zoonotics from illegal selling) and that virus caused over 55% mortality among folks infected. It appears this virus may not have such a mortality rate. Glad that China has banned, as of today, marketing of wild animals as it appears that is where many of these flu type outbreaks come from. (Then again, the reports were that this came from already illegal selling, so who knows).

I just cannot bear to fathom the difficulties in China if a loved one was symptomtic...then diagnosed. They would be thrown into isolation in start up facilities. Someone could have a cold or flu or respiratory and thrown into such, merely to catch it when the didn't have it due to improper facilities and isolation and/or transmission by medical personnel. Oh dear... do I put on a mask and bolt to the airport to try to get to another country where I might get a bed in a hospital vs. a retrofitted isolation place that last week was a vacant apartment high rise.. dunno. My heart indeed goes out to them.

Our Daughter just travelled yesterday thru Pearson Airport (Toronto) not thru International tho. I haven't had a chance to catch up but I'm interested to hear if there was any screening. Or even at our local Hospital as she is a Nurse on Surgery. I know when Sars was prevalent our Hospital had triage at the Emerg. entrance and only Patient and Hospital Employees allowed in.

Good example of a reporter interpreting incorrectly MOO. The reporters interpretation is put within the quotes, but is not part of the quotes. The screening is for two weeks, it has not been determined that is the timing for how long a person can spread it prior to symptoms. Health officials have not determined how long after exposure symptoms and transmissions occurs. The screening now is for folks that have been exposed within the last two weeks.

For you in Canada, you may want to follow Canada Health stuff (analogous to following CDC US link I gave above)
