I just talked with our Daughter. No screening at Pearson as of her travel. She is back to work tomorrow so not sure if anything is in place at our Hospital.

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control:

On the basis of the information currently available, ECDC considers that:

  • the potential impact of 2019-nCoV outbreaks is high;
  • further global spread is likely;
  • there is currently a moderate likelihood of infection for EU/EEA citizens residing in or visiting Wuhan, Hubei province, China;
  • there is a high likelihood of further case importation into countries with the greatest volume of people who have travelled from Wuhan, Hubei Province (i.e. countries in Asia);
  • there is a moderate likelihood of further case importation into EU/EEA countries;
  • adherence to appropriate infection prevention and control practices, particularly in healthcare settings in EU/EEA countries with direct links to Hubei, means that the likelihood of a case detected in the EU resulting in secondary cases within the EU/EEA is low;
  • the impact of the late detection of an imported case in an EU/EEA country without the application of appropriate infection prevention and control measures would be high, therefore in such a scenario the risk of secondary transmission in the community setting is estimated to be very high.
Risk assessment: outbreak of acute respiratory syndrome associated with a novel coronavirus, China; First cases imported in the EU/EEA; second update

Good example of a reporter interpreting incorrectly MOO. The reporters interpretation is put within the quotes, but is not part of the quotes. The screening is for two weeks, it has not been determined that is the timing for how long a person can spread it prior to symptoms. Health officials have not determined how long after exposure symptoms and transmissions occurs. The screening now is for folks that have been exposed within the last two weeks.

MOO
China’s National Health Commission (NHC) said on Sunday that the new coronavirus is contagious even in its incubation period, which lasts up to 14 days, and that the virus’ ability to spread is getting stronger.

I would be concerned about flying anywhere right now - even domestic flights. Cannot ascertain where plane has previously been or who's been on it or who has used a bathroom before you or sat in a waiting area seat or even more.

The globalization of the workforce means we don't know if someone at O'Hare airport in Chicago might walk by a coughing passenger just in from Wuhan. That's why universal precautions like those used to prevent the spread of influenza would apply for any traveler, he adds. Wuhan coronavirus: Is it safe to travel?

Wondering if authorities have considered banning flights from certain places for the time being? imo.
Man believed to have coronavirus in Toronto showed symptoms on flight
''January 26, 2020 rbbm.
OTTAWA -- The first Canadian patient diagnosed with a novel form of coronavirus began showing signs of illness on the plane that brought him back from the disease's epicentre., Canada's Chief Public Health officer said Sunday as she stressed the risk of future infection is low.''

''Tam said authorities are now working to help track some of his fellow passengers, but said the case demonstrates that the country's public health protocols are working''.

''Tam said the Ontario patient did not report his flu-like symptoms upon first landing in Toronto, but did share his recent stay in Wuhan with first responders when he sought medical help the next day. The man remains in hospital, where Ontario health authorities said he's being held in a negative-pressure room used to contain airborne illnesses.''

I hope no one at my job gets it. Some of these people run around coughing and sneezing without covering their mouths and right now the business office has three people with cold sores because they all use the same copiers and stuff.

I guess the only thing one can do is be incredibly diligent with hand washing. My job takes me into various settings where people share computers, phones etc. etc. I am crazy diligent when I have to go to Hospital weekly any time of year. I have a cheap pr. of gloves I use to push any buttons which I launder after use. I carry my own hand bac as the Hospital's is so drying. In my mind if u want to get sick go to a Hospital :rolleyes:

Admittedly i get super grossed out by spit and unfortunately it seems a lot of people do it on public sidewalks, ect.
Maybe i am taking it too far, but i sometimes wonder if when people walk on it, then maybe bacteria/ disease ect will transfer to the footwear and then be spread around all over, including on to hands when the shoes are removed.
speculation, imo.

“germ factory” is how Many of us refer to our place of employment. We might have separate shoes that don’t leave the building, wash our clothing separately from family’s stuff, still catch everything going around, have to go to work sick due to staffing issues and attendance policies.

I’ve been wearing a mask since October after having cold symptoms twice in a months time. Anecdotal sure but I’ve managed to avoid anything “sick time off” worthy since. Despite the widespread occurrence a nasty respiratory bug thing going around since like late summer.
I think we’re currently moderate for diagnosed flu activity.

I’m not a provider but do come into contact with patients, visitors, employees and everything they touch,flush, cough/sneeze/spit on, or throw away (we really need a puking smilie):rolleyes:

Hospitals/dr offices should have masks available. If they’re not out front and center you can ask for one. The obvious hand washing and hand sanitizing oh and Don’t touch your face!!!!!!! ( this one comes from the old timers as rule #1) Don’t be there unless you need to be ( and leave the kiddies at home unless they need to be there-visiting uncle joe after hernia surgery reallllly isn’t worth exposing your kid to the flu or cdiff or whatever). And don’t let your babies crawl on the floor fortheloveofgod

Yes and folks still show up to work sick. I just got over a nasty bout of pneumonia. Started as a sinus infection. So many things people can do to limit exposure. My Dr's office has a sign posted if you have respiratory symptoms please use a mask. They are provided and available any time of year.

"The patient is a student at Arizona State University but does not live in university housing. ADHS officials said the person had recently returned from travel to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the illness."

ETA the school's website says January 13th is when school started.

My above MOO post was incorrect, I was wrong. Things are moving so fast, Sorry about that.

5 US coronavirus cases now confirmed; infection can spread before symptoms show

"China Health Minister Ma Xiaowei said Sunday that it appeared the "ability of the virus to spread is getting stronger” and that it is infectious before symptoms show, a characteristic that could make it harder to contain.

“From observations, the virus is capable of transmission even during incubation period” of one to 14 days, Ma said. “There are hidden carriers.”

"That makes this outbreak different from severe acute respiratory syndrome, SARS, a virus that was not contagious during incubation."

Containing new coronavirus may not be feasible, experts say - STAT

Tools like quarantine and isolation — which were key to controlling SARS — are unlikely stop spread of a virus that can transmit during the period from infection to symptoms, experts say.

Holy moly, possibly days of being on campus :( I dont mean to be insensitive to the poor person who's ill. It just shows how hard to contain this thing it is.
