Crafts To Do During Covid Restrictions

I went from saying I would not do a video tutorial to doing 2 video tutorials today on those paper crafts. Very redneck rigging job with the video. We took my husband’s car phone holder and suction cupped it to a lap tray that has a hinged table top. We put the whole contraption on a regular table, angled upward so that the phone hung down on a 45 degree angle and I could video my hands making the project up-close.

I’m thinking about a clothes pin wreath with washi tape next. I’ll find a picture.
Where theres a will, theres a way! Good for you. Videos don’t need to be fancy to get the info across.

Don’t know if anyone has ever made safety pin jewelry. It’s easy and great for a little gift. Here’s a link to how to make them... plenty are out there, just google safety pin bracelets, etc.

No cats crashed it, either, which is almost unbelievable when you consider how my book club meeting went tonight. I was just a member, not the host, thank goodness. And it was at a suburban Chicago library hours away where nobody knows me. We were discussing The Splendid and the Vile, and one of my cats decided to show both. He kept pushing against my face during the zoom meeting and then he started giving himself a SLURPING bath right into the microphone. I had to assure them I wasn't the one making the disgusting noises.

At least he didn't moon anybody tonight.

LOL! We have Zoom calls with some friends who have a cat, and he almost always shows up. And often moons us! I will call his name and he looks at me, but he doesn't reply.

Have you made gingerbread houses with your kids? I used to do this every year when my son was young, and even as he grew up, he still wanted to join in with my young nieces... lots of fun!!

I would start with a gingerbread house kit for each (you can buy many places for about $10). I would assemble them ahead of time and secure them on a piece of foam core. We wouldn’t just decorate the houses, but rather make whole scenes. I would buy additional candies, cookies, Santa wrapped chocolates, etc. One rule... everything had to be edible, so I would make a paste out of confectioners sugar and water, put it in a pastry tube and that would be our glue. Those Keebler fudge logs are great for chimneys with a chocolate wrapped Santa going in or on a sleigh. We had decorated pathways and trees along the way. After all decorated, I would spread a thin layer of that sugar paste and we would fill with mini marshmallows for snow.

Everyone proudly enjoyed viewing their creations the days leading up to Christmas!!

This sounds delightful! And on/after Christmas... I assume these charming creations were eaten?

I've been, well, knitting my fool head off. My two favorite fellow knitters and I have been having video stitch and chats, but I can't show-and-tell there because I'm knitting a project for one of them. I'm desperately trying to finish it in time to leave it on her front porch by Christmas.

I make bags for no reason. LOL! I quilt but sometimes I just need a little side project. This is the one I use for my meds. I have to take them when I go to the doctor. I don’t have a pattern. I just wing it.
I make bags out of Christmas fabric with ribbon pulls and bells or something at the ends... they end up being super easy wrapping year after year and I have a pile in different sizes.

Oh I'd love to see photos! One year my daughter belonged to this wine club. She got this case of wine with 12 different bottles from 12 different wineries. So we made a cloth wine bottle bag for each bottle (they were different shapes) and she gave them as gifts. I did the same thing, used ribbon, drawstring, added beads and bells. She wanted to keep the bags. I had to explain they were part of the gift. I think she was 23 or 24 at the time and had just graduated college. Adulting lesson for sure.

These are some of the bags... not the best quality lol you can see the “Joann fabric” edge one one... but they work to make wrapping super fast! My project this year is making permanent tags out of copper, so we don’t toss anything. I started doing this after I lived in Japan, so the red snowman fabric is not a bag, but is just pinked around the edge so I use as a furoshiki. Some of the bags are 20+ years old!

That is such a good idea! I am going to have to copy this for sure. However, I sort of scared to touch any of my Christmas fabric until I determine the fabrics for my quilts.

I have this quilt pattern I want to do called Bountiful Boxes from Quilting Quickly Nov/Dec 2018. It is king size but I am going to make it as 2 twin size. One for each of my girls. It requires 20 Christmas or coordinating prints.

Have you ever knit with ribbon? It's gorgeous.
