Cruise ship to 'evacuate its 1,300 passengers after sending mayday signal off the coast of Norway'.

SISTE: Politiet har fått inn ny mayday-signal

Norwegian news with apparently no-too-great Google translate saying Hagland Captain crew jumping overboard so they can get picked up by the helicopter, Flightradar shows chopper still circling so could be true, hopefully not because that sounds like a disaster all on its own, those waves are high...

Anyone here read Norwegian?!

Wow, that is pretty scary. Sounds like the entire rescue situation is deteriorating. If the crew is jumping ship, I wonder if things are worse than reported.

So much for lifeboats. In a treacherous environment, sounds like it doesn't matter much.

The post you quoted is for the cargo ship Hagland Captain, not the cruise ship. Just saying to be sure.

Some of the crew on Hagland Captain have jumped into the sea, and it's decided that all nine onboard shall be air-lifted off the ship. At first it was decided that the crew was to stay onboard, but it seems that the situation have became worse, and they will now abandon the ship.

Update from NRK:

So far, 139 have been evacuated, about 1200 passengers are remaining on Viking Sky. Three have been reported seriously injured and have been brought to hospital ashore.

There will be a press conferance held by midnight (Norwegian time).

Several of the crew on HC jumped into the sea and were picked up by helicopter.

As for the question about lifeboats: The passengers are much more safe inside the cruise ship because of the weather. It's very cold in the area + the waves are high. I remember when Estonia went down in 1994, majority of the lifeboats became quite useless because the bad weather either turned the lifeboats upside-down, or filled them up with cold water (many died of hypothermia, not drowning).

Britons tell of ‘frightening’ evacuation from cruise ship off Norway’s coast

“Footage online appeared to show the ship rocking dramatically, with debris falling from the ceiling and furniture including chairs sliding across the floor as passengers sat waiting to be rescued.”

“Derek and Esther Browne, from Hampshire, said the ‘whole boat was swaying, it was very rough’ before they were airlifted to safety.”

“Mr Browne told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Stephen Nolan: ‘We had a few people on stretchers, several with cuts, two with broken limbs, but fortunately we were alright. We were airlifted onto the helicopter which was quite a frightening experience.’”

166 passengers on Viking Sky have been evacuated so far.
All crew on HC are safe.

The press conference: The Livestream via NRK will start at 23.59.
VPN should solve your regional problems if you can't access the stream.

Siste om evakueringen av cruiseskipet Viking Sky og lasteskipet Hagland Captain

Edit/update:
The evacuated are brought to Brynehallen (a sports centre) before being taken to various hotels nearby.

The situation seems to be under control; there really isn't that much fuzz about it in MSM now, other than an update every once in a while. The evacuation is slightly delayed because of the dark of the night, the weather, and the troubles HC ran into, but otherwise runs smoothly, so it seems.

All 9 crew of cargo ship Hagland Captain are safe ashore, ship is anchored at sea and expected to be okay even though it's listing to port visibly.

Oh thanks for that! I saw the choppers land near there and looked it up on Google maps and saw the huge hall. I don't know how accurate Flightradar is, but it looked like they were landing on a nearby field across the road, not the soccer fields next door.

so they're only able to rescue one by one and there's only three helicopters and 1300 passengers???

  • #52
It looks like they can lift one at a time to the helicopter, but the helicopter can carry a dozen or so people each trip?

5 helicopters, taking up to 15 people for each trip. The weather makes the rescue challenging. They can not use the lifeboats.

199 rescued so far. Ten brought to hospital; one brought to Haukeland university hospital in Bergen.

Numbers and updates from NRK.

that makes more sense ... I think some of the media is confused or not being clear with their wording

Some of it might be translation issues, I imagine...it's a difficult situation for everybody.

I have been on a cruise, and decided that I prefer to just enjoy vacations by train instead.

One worrisome thing is that many seniors who have disabilities prefer cruises. They are hardly in shape for a precarious rescue situation. I noticed that when a cruise ship off the coast of Italy had to be evacuated. I hope everyone will be safe.

Viking cruises tend to have older customers who prefer smaller ships without the kids and theme park attractions of Royal Caribbean cruises. The Viking Cruises are expensive and cater to the luxury end of the market prices start at £3,500 $4,625 and sometimes double this per person.

They all must be very frightened it is even worse getting rescued at night.

338 rescued so far. 17 are brought to hospital; three have serious injuries (fractures), and one brought to Haukeland university hospital in Bergen. The most injured passengers are elderly people (70-90 y/o).

Three of the four engines on Viking Sky are working now, and the cruise ship is moving at 2-3 knots; two other boats are waiting to eventually navigate it back safely to Molde. However, the evacuation continues with three helicopters in action.

Out of six ship meant to depart Molde Saturday, four postphoned their departure due to the weather, while two decided to go despite of it. VS was one of the latter. VS is a relatively new ship (from 2017), and this was its first trip during winter in Norway.

All Search and Rescue Teams have been mobilized in the entire region, and many have volunteered at the evacuation centre at Brynhallen, making sure it was heated up properly and making coffee to the rescued passengers :)

Numbers and updates from NRK and VG.

I believe you are on to something here, @carbuff. From what I see, Norwegian MSM regarding this case is pretty clear and matter-of-factly (some clumsy wording here and there), but IMO, Google Translate works much "better" with Swedish and Danish (which should tell you something in itself..), but can make an absolute dog's dinner with Norwegian! Like, wth is a "shoe-lasher"?? *smh*
