Crystal was last seen heading home from St. Joseph, Missouri to Kansas City, Missouri about 2:20 am on February 24, 1997. Her 1989 Maroon Ford Probe LX was found on the side of the road locked, out of gas with flashers on. She has not been seen since.
On April 24, 1999, her suspected killer, John E. Williams, hung himself in his jail cell. He left no suicide note. Williams had told authorities he accidentally hit Crystal with his car as she stood on the shoulder and buried her. Police believe he killed her and disposed of her body. Police discovered Crystal's ID cards, a paycheck stub, jewelry, her car keys, a mock turtleneck and a pair of "Lucky U" brand jeans in Williams' apartment. They also found a missing-person flier, in addition to computer files.
Crystal's body has never been located, though areas in Platte City and near where her car was found were searched extensively.
