Jurors on Tuesday afternoon began deliberating the fate of Tony Moreno, the Middletown father accused of throwing his 7-month-old son off the Arrigoni Bridge to his death in July 2015.
During closing arguments Tuesday morning, Moreno's defense lawyer, Norman A. Pattis, said that Moreno never intended to kill his son, Aaden, and pointed to Moreno's own testimony in which he said he dropped the boy accidentally into the Connecticut River.
But Middlesex State's Attorney Peter McShane urged jurors to convict Moreno of murder and risk of injury to a minor, charges that could put Moreno in prison for up to 70 years.
McShane argued that when Moreno left his house on July 5, 2015, he could have left Aaden with three potential caregivers. A few nights earlier, McShane said, Moreno left Aaden home while he went out to dinner with friends.
"Those three were in the house, yet he chose to take his son out of bed at 11 p.m. on a Sunday night," McShane said.
