So interesting! and I think you nailed it perfectly.MOO
She is IMO a poser, a grifter, but she played this hand badly. It's clear that she was being misled by FD. Gaslit. He played her.
Had she come clean she might've gotten a sweetheart deal, FD would be in prison where he belongs and she'd have gotten a soft sentence. Man, they gave her every opportunity and then some.
And to think all that blame and she never even met Jennifer. Took FD's word without question.
It's really telling. A decent person would have genuinely crumbled, realizing they'd been misled, that they'd played a part, witting or otherwise, in murder. She didn't. Every question, she goes back to the script. Can't supply a natural answer to save her soul. Easy stuff. Did you x? Usually I... what did you wear? Probably I...
These detectives, best I can tell, made a fatal mistake in these interviews. They tried to appeal to her, as a mother.
She seems only to be that when it serves her.
Appealing to her greed might have worked better. It's her language at least.
Greed. Entitlement. Standard of living.

Your point about LE appealing to her as a mother is so spot on and I'm glad you pointed it out. No matter how much training LE has I think that even they can be thrown when dealing with a narc/sociopath/psychopath that goes against preconceived ideas about people or those who only focus on themselves. LE thought that by appealing to motherhood (wrongly in the case of MT as you point out) as the core of MT being they miscalculated as to what they were dealing with in her as a suspect.
I do think the female detective might have piped up but then seemed to stop but I do think the males in the room all assumed that MT cared about her daughter more than herself and so would base her decisions on this fact. Sad that they didn't really look back at the duration of MT and FD relationship to see how it progressed and how much priority (none imo) MT placed on her daughter when making life choices. But, it probably was too early in the investigation and probably not a priority research item.
BIngo on Greed!
