This is why I have such a hard time with the DP.
Who among us can be the judge and jury as to what the effect the abuse that happens in our childhoods has upon our adulthood? I don't know if what he went through as a child factored here. But, does anyone of you?
Is he playing this up? Very possible. Does it really matter in the long run?
Not much, imo. LWOP or DP? Doe he deserve the same fate or worse than his victims? Absolutely! Who is qualified to determine that? Not me. jmo

My initial thought was that JK would NOT testify. But then reading that article where Judge Blue previously allowed a capital defendant to testify and not be subject to cross-examination made me rethink that. I would think that if JK can get the same deal, then why would he NOT testify?

I don't know what, if anything, he says is the truth because I think the truth and JK are not well acquainted.

Therefore I judge by what he's done since that's the only thing he could (and did) control. And based on what he did and has continued to do (taunt Dr. Petit), he is not remorseful in the least. He could have done a thousand different things to prevent that family from being tortured and burned alive. Instead he participated in their massacre and, as far as I'm concerned, probably engineered it as well.

Yes I could make the ultimate decision to fry his buttocks. And I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. In reality he'll likely die of natural causes before the state ever executes him.

I think after the defense dragging this out for so long and showing the video of JK's daughter I think it's very unlikely that this jury will sentence JK to death. What's the real shame is that once JK's daughter grows up and realizes that she was a pawn used to avert the DP from being given will she be angered? Probably. I think again we're witnessing a scorched Earth technique by JK and his defense where they think any means justifies the end. In this case if after following both cases (Hayes and JK's) I personally think the DP is more warranted in JK's case than I do Hayes. I think even given LWOP JK is by far the more dangerous prisoner and who has the ability to further damage others including his own daughter and the only surviving victim Dr. Petit.
And I surely hope Judge Blue does not grant JK the opportunity to testify without being cross examined. If he wants to testify he should do so but also be cross examined.

I am sure very few of them who were damaged by the practices of that church went on to commit crimes of the magnitude of JK, does not mean they and he were not severely damaged emotionally and spiritually by that church,

I will. I have no problem judging whether there could possibly be anything mitigating to the absolutely historically horrendous crime he committed. I vote for it doesn't really matter. He's not insane; he's morally bankrupt.

Two witnesses.

One was the officer who took JK's confession about two burglaries he did with Hayes THE NIGHT BEFORE he killed the Petit family. He (JK) explained they did the robbery because he needed $$ for gasoline (Even though JK had a full time paying job and paid no rent to his parents and had no other bills). He spoke as calmly about the robberies as if he were going to an ATM to get money. Also of important note he AGAIN robbed the same house that he had robbed 5 years previously. Which in my opinion shows he doesn't learn from his mistakes and will continue to make them over and over again.

The second was was a probation officer who made the pre-sentencing report for JK on the 19 burglaries. She spoke of JK's alleged claim that he was sexually assaulted by a stranger in an alley after he ran away. It's important to note this alleged assault is completely different from what the defense had submitted during their case. Which I think shows that JK tends to either out right lie, embellishes or otherwise makes up his claims of abuse. Also in her report JK made a claim to this Prob. Officer that his parents sought all the help possible for him. Again I think this just shows that JK will lie and do whatever and by whatever means to get him out of the jam he currently faces. He reminds me too much of Casey Anthony.

I agree Ziggy, it doesnt matter. I'm not saying that a person's childhood shouldnt be taken into consideration, but in this case first, I just dont believe JK, second, I dont think it had the effect on him that he now claims, and third, even if it did, it doesnt mean that he shouldnt be executed.

This crime, for me is way too close to home. I live just 5 minutes from the Petit home. My town borders Cheshire and is also a small town and tight knit community. The thought that comes to mind is that this could have happened to anybody, including my family. I remember the day we heard the news like most remember 9/11. I was at work and my mom called to tell me what happened, we started to pull live news feeds to see what was going on. They had the "suspects" in custody already, which was a relief. The details were horrific and literally everybody was shocked and talking about what happened. Still to this day people are calling for justice and in my opinion JK will get the death penalty! I have been to the strip mall and grocery store MANY times where JK first saw the Petit family. I can't help but think that this could have happened to anybody. Such a senseless, random, cruel and vicious act that will forever leave me and everyone else with more questions than answers.

IMO:
Is there one more responible than the other, NO!!
Does any prior abuse to the victims (no matter how young) out-weigh their actions, NO!!
There is literally NOTHING that can convince me that JK life should be sparred after he and SH took the lives of three beautiful women/children and left our community in such fear and grief. He poured gasoline on those girls while they were tied to their beds, Discusting and unforgivable!!!

God bless the Petit family and may Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela (just 11 years old) RIP.

Hi Nicki007 - I'm sure it was terrifying and sickening to be so close to that tragedy. I completely agree that even though he may have been abused, we can't allow people to have excuses for being bad people. If we make concessions for him, then we have to for everyone who had something bad happen to them. There are plenty of people who endure drastically bad childhood trauma but they don't become vile criminals.

I think the only thing that matters is that he is responsible for the deaths of 3 people and there are aggravating circumstances and the death penalty is a justifiable homicide in that state and he should be sentenced accordingly.

Mostly, when I'm super cranky I think he's just whining about his trials and tribulations. I'm so over them both.

Praying for justice and praying that the Petit family can finally start to heal from this nightmare...I know their lives will never EVER be even remotely the same, but I pray that justice is served and that Dr Petit and his family can have some kind of closure, however small it may be. God bless them...this is probably the worst act of cruelty I've ever heard of (in our generation) in my 25 years of life. Personally I think JK is a monster who shows no remorse. He deserves far, far worse than any punishment the justice system would be allowed to give him.

Bout time----this is the longest penalty phase i've ever seen. Justice hopefully will be imposed.

Fingers crossed that DP is imposed.

I believe this is necessary not only because the crime deserves it and there are not enough mitigating factors to overcome the heinousness of the crime, but also I believe it is something important in the long healing process for the Petit family -- not that they will ever heal from this.
