GUILTY CT - Maren Sanchez, 16, fatally stabbed, Milford, 25 April 2014

BBM:
Standard practice for any individuals within a healthcare facility, offers the accused the ability to be present yet continue medical treatment.
This psych eval. was a joint decision, provides the prosecution & defense a "baseline" of competency to stand trial.

Yep, IF the defense decides to go with diminished capacity, it WILL be an up-hill battle. There's also the possibility of a plea bargain eliminating a trial.

Thank you for clarifying this joypath.

It makes sense. I realize the protocols vary from state to state, and we don't have all the details yet.

The baseline will be crucial, and we will have to wait and see what the defense ultimately decides to do. I don't expect this process to happen quickly. It should take a much time as is needed to properly, and ethically evaluate CP (speaking from a forensic psych perspective), even though it must be torturous for Maren's family.

Prayers for all involved.

I think metal detectors work best for schools in the inner city, which is where they mostly where they are. If you have a school where you have kids in gangs, then you don't want a fight starting, and someone pulls out a knife.

I have to wonder why so many school shootings happen in middle class or higher towns. There is a huge problem with crime in Chicago and Detroit, but you don't hear about about school massacres there.

I wonder about that too.

Family and Friends Say Goodbye to Maren Sanchez

(snip)
Sanchez will be buried in her in prom gown and with the rose her boyfriend was to give her the night of the prom, a source said.

(snip)
As Gov. Dannell P. Malloy put it when he spoke at the vigil: “She was everything we want ourselves and our kids to be.”

Even the therapy dogs who have comforted students in the days after Sanchez’s death were there Thursday to comfort mourners.

Milford Community Gathers for Maren Sanchez's Wake

(snip)
Beachwood Florist, which does business with the funeral home, said that as soon as they learned that Maren Sanchez’s favorite color was purple, they started stocking up.

“Everything from purple carnations to purple larkspur. I mean, it’s an endless amount of stuff that we ordered,” said Vinnie Lambiase, Owner, of Beachwood Florist.

The florist called their wholesaler and told them to send everything they had in purple.

All of the flower shops in Milford chipped in to donate the arrangements Maren’s family requested.

Maren Sanchez and Rage as the Male Emotion

(An extensive analysis - another must read from the Huffington Post) :moo:

(snip)

I agree with Soraya Chemaly's assessment that this and many other examples of violence against women at the hands of men are the "product of pervasive, violently maintained, gender hierarchy."

As Chemaly notes, these assaults happen every day and will continue to occur until we face and change those in our society who promote and teach entitlement and superiority to boys, and who fail to teach boys self-control.

As Chemaly says, there is a Self-Control Gap encouraged by the "boys will be boys" mentality and when a boy lashes out with violence we need to immediately think about status and power, and the use of violence to retain power.

But there is more...

http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/04/justice/connecticut-school-killing-plea/

A 17-year-old Connecticut high school student pleaded not guilty Wednesday in the slashing death of a classmate in a school stairwell in April, a court official said.

Christopher Plaskon appeared in Milford Superior Court, where he waived his right to a probable cause hearing and elected to be tried by a three-judge panel rather than a 12-member jury, according to clerk Linda Kautzner.

His attorney, Richard Meehan Jr., told CNN that he is considering a mental health defense.

Interesting question, Eileen. I think the answer is that crime in inner cities is for "gain" - drug crime, theft crime, revenge gang crimes where the goal is to never have the crime solved and the perp gains property or power or territory - and there's some effort to avoid prosecution for the crime.

School shootings are for revenge, seeking justice from some kind of rejection, and the perp usually doesn't care if he's discovered and usually kills himself afterwards. So really, they're completely different motivations and so involve different types of criminals.

Plaskon was in court today, along with his uncle, Paul Healy, who served as his guardian. Several family members were in attendance, too, including his mother, father and a brother...

The attorneys involved in the case gave the judge a status report, and Plaskon’s next court date was set for Oct. 16...

Plaskon is being held at the Manson Youth Institute in Cheshire on $3 million bond.

And there you have it. We knew this was coming, but it still hurts, knowing what Maren's family will have to endure now.

My heart goes our to them. I hope the State is able to prepare the strongest of cases. The burden is now on the defense.

The crime was brutal. Maren was robbed of so much. She suffered tremendously. Her family, loved ones, friends, cohort, and schoolmates will never, ever be the same.

I hope the adjudication process will result in the maximum sentence - in a correctional facility. :moo:

This latest turn of events is self-serving, but I admit my bias. He exerted a final act of brutal control. :rose:

As the discovery process and case draws closer, perhaps I will change my mind (not likely).

http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=15...ling-suspect-faces-another-psychiatric-review

A judge has ordered a Connecticut teenager accused of stabbing a classmate to death on the day of their prom to be examined by psychiatrists for the state, after his lawyers announced they were pursuing an insanity defense...

Milford State's Attorney Kevin Lawlor requested Tuesday that the prosecution be allowed to have its own experts evaluate Plaskon's mental health. A judge is giving Lawlor until July 7 to have that review completed.

Essentially the same as earlier info as earlier editions.

Here's the official "maximum security site" information: http://www.ct.gov/DMHAS/cwp/view.asp?a=2900&q=412462

P: from "friendly FREE legal advice" aka a State Attorney, the Judge panel does NOT have to be unanimous just a 2 to 1 ruling! AND.....just for more information re: CVH, a defense attorney provided THIS link: http://www.clrp.org/legal-issues-we...nt-hospital-issues/whiting-forensic-division/ , again "friendly FREE legal advice"! (YES, sometimes there are both sides of a case in my office at the same time but today, we were @ lunch!). :happydance: :loveyou: :happydance:
