On a related note... I think I remember seeing Ian Hunter and Mott the Hoople open for someone else in the late '70's. Possibly Eddie Money. (The connection is that David Bowie wrote "All The Young Dudes" for them).

Didn't realize there was so much Bowie I liked! I saw The Man Who Fell to Earth in the theater when it came out. My favorite songs: Space Oddity, Rebel, Rebel, Suffragette City, Young Americans, Heroes, Changes, All the Young Dudes, and Star Man.
F.Y.I., he would have been the other Davy Jones, but he changed his name- good thing!

Didn't care so much for Jean Genie, China Girl, Let's Dance, Fame, or Under Pressure

Back in the mid-80s when I saw Bowie at the Tacoma Dome on the Serious Moonlight tour, I went as much because The Tubes were opening for him. (My ex and I had been huge fans of The Tubes back in the day.)

What a night that was.......the Tacoma Dome has a wooden dome, so the acoustics in it are wonderful.

I so appreciate everyone sharing their memories and video clips and news stories. That Guardian article was especially good IMO. It'll be good to come back to this thread when time has eased my heart a little bit more. It's still too raw right now.

Coming up with a top 10 or 20 is proving impossible.

Watching video after video and this came up. I'd never seen it before.

I saw him in Montreal and the internet is a wonderful place where you can find setlists to almost every show you've ever been to.

What I love about David Bowie

--I imagine David Bowie has a “stardust view” of planet earth; I imagine every song, writing, film, retro files, videos, lost concerts, messages, tweets, re-pub of past articles, and new; the beautiful outpouring of family, friends, fans, professionals, and others…. Internet, Facebook, twitter, Instagram, etc… is somehow reflected back from planet earth in real time "to him", and received in heaven in real time, "to him"…

--I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news about John Lennon’s murder. No other artist with the exception of Michael Jackson has hit me with such a force as to make me stop, and 'turn around'.

--What I love about David Bowie is his creative process: cut up the words, throw in air, let fall, and arrange lyrics; find Stevie Ray Vaughn at jazz festival, find Nile Rodgers, worship Little Richard, make a worldwide hit: Let’s Dance”!!!

--I love the preproduction album version that showcases SRV’s full guitar, and the horns are amazing.

--I love that he took Blondie on tour, loves the Iggy and velvet underground, and found an unknown jazz quartet to record Blackstar. (Though I think that was planned for anonymity)

--What I find myself loving is “the man”, he is a romantic. I don’t know about his love story other than what I read in the press – BUT his references to love are ever felt in Blackstar.

--My goodness, David Bowie – you are the quintessential man – so beautiful, so handsome, iconic, and even in your final hours, I can only love you more, more, more!

The button isn't enough. Thank you for this thoughtful post.

Arcade Fire’s David Bowie parade shuts down New Orleans

This afternoon Arcade Fire and Preservation Hall Jazz Band held a second line parade in honor of David Bowie. Joined by hundreds of fans, many of who came dressed in their best Bowie outfits, the two bands marched through the streets of New Orleans performing his music.

Long ago, David Bowie entered our dream lives.

I know it is not what a more 'pure' Bowie fan would probably like but 'Modern Love' (live) is one of my favorites! Not just that I like the song, but I like the interactions on stage between Bowie and his band and the back-up singers. I was only about 6 when he first hit the scene.

David Bowie's Son Breaks Social Media Silence to Share Emotional Thank You Letter from Palliative Care Physician

http://www.people.com/article/dunca...+people/headlines+(PEOPLE.com:+Top+Headlines)

"Thank you for 'Lazarus' and Blackstar," Taubert said. "I am a palliative care doctor, and what you have done in the time surrounding your death has had a profound effect on me and many people I work with. Your album is strewn with references, hints and allusions. As always, you don't make interpretation all that easy, but perhaps that isn't the point."

I was a big Bowie fan. I did drift away somewhat after Let's Dance. But back in the day, I had about 80 Bowie albums from different countries on different media. With respect to him, after his death I decided to gift my signed Davie Jones and the Kingbees album to a local women's shelter.

I had heard that he'd been rather ill for the past 18 months. Godspeed to paradise, to the Thin White Duke.

Bill Flanagan is one of my favorite music writers. He's penned a nice piece about David Bowie:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-artistry-of-david-bowie/

With every metamorphosis he lost old fans -- and gained new ones.

Bowie would never be pinned down. But over the decades and through all the changes, something remarkable occurred. The audience found sincere, empathetic and at times universal emotion in the music of this quick-change artist.
