The Anacostia joins the Potomac some distance upstream, and the section where the crash is is the Potomac, not the Anacostia. The other side of the river ?
TY.The Anacostia joins the Potomac some distance upstream, and the section where the crash is is the Potomac, not the Anacostia.
This ABC Australia article has a map showing the position of the crash site.

Search for remaining bodies in Washington DC crash continues
First responders have recovered the bodies of 28 passengers from the American Airlines jet that collided with the helicopter, US officials said.www.abc.net.au
I believe that is about the number usually on board. I have been on commuter planes about this size. The number of passengers of approx 60 on board the passenger plane seem little.
Would this be a usual number for a domestic flight on such a large aircraft?

It appears they have found one of the black boxes.
Also, two people familiar with the airport think the plane was turning left (according to radar data) and lining up to land on runway 33, and that it was at less than 300 feet elevation ... very close to touching down. That it is possible that the pilot didn't even see the helicopter as they would have been focused on the turn and the runway. They are wondering what the focus of the helicopter pilot was.
A dive team found what appears to be one of the plane's two data recorders — the so-called black boxes. It wasn't clear whether it was the cockpit voice recorder or the one that stores data about the plane's performance.
Divers have had some access to the aircraft's cabin.
Luggage is among items divers have recovered.
The helicopter is upside down but appears to be mostly intact, Van Cleave adds.

Search for victims in D.C. plane crash continues in Potomac River
An American Airlines plane with 64 people on board collided with an Army helicopter over Washington, D.C., and crashed into the Potomac River.www.cbsnews.com
I wish they had all 67 people before they started talking about black boxes. IMO.
This accident is 7 hours old. They could be finding people ..yet they reserve those people to search for the boxes. It is why the dive team is there. If the black boxes reveal something that affects an entire fleet of aircraft, it's important to know that asap.
While this incident appears to be straight up human error at first blush, it's not always the case that it's that simple and straightforward.
MOO

Officials indicated a number of people died after an American Airlines flight collided with a military helicopter Wednesday night, causing both to crash into the Potomac River.
You're making an assumption that they're prioritising the black boxes over saveable people. This accident is 7 hours old. They could be finding people ..yet they reserve those people to search for the boxes. It is why the dive team is there.
Is there already a thread for this? I tried to look for it before I posted a new one, sorryThis about to be merged ..into a different thread .
