The other side of the river ?
The Anacostia joins the Potomac some distance upstream, and the section where the crash is is the Potomac, not the Anacostia.

This ABC Australia article has a map showing the position of the crash site.

World champion Russian figure skaters confirmed as being on board crashed US plane

US Figure Skating said on Thursday that several skaters were on an American Airlines regional passenger plane that crashed near Ronald Reagan national airport on Wednesday.

It appears they have found one of the black boxes.

Also, two people familiar with the airport think the plane was turning left (according to radar data) and lining up to land on runway 33, and that it was at less than 300 feet elevation ... very close to touching down. That it is possible that the pilot didn't even see the helicopter as they would have been focused on the turn and the runway. They are wondering what the focus of the helicopter pilot was.

A dive team found what appears to be one of the plane's two data recorders — the so-called black boxes. It wasn't clear whether it was the cockpit voice recorder or the one that stores data about the plane's performance.

Divers have had some access to the aircraft's cabin.

Luggage is among items divers have recovered.

The helicopter is upside down but appears to be mostly intact, Van Cleave adds.

I wish they had all 67 people before they started talking about black boxes. IMO.

If the black boxes reveal something that affects an entire fleet of aircraft, it's important to know that asap.

While this incident appears to be straight up human error at first blush, it's not always the case that it's that simple and straightforward.

Air traffic control asked the Blackhawk to confirm visibility of the CRJ which they did. Then 13 seconds later the collision.

The controller then said, “PAT 2-5 pass behind the CRJ.”

Additional air traffic control audio shortly before the collision captures the helicopter pilot saying, “PAT 2-5 has aircraft in sight, request visual separation.”

Officials indicated a number of people died after an American Airlines flight collided with a military helicopter Wednesday night, causing both to crash into the Potomac River.

This accident is 7 hours old. They could be finding people ..yet they reserve those people to search for the boxes. It is why the dive team is there.

This about to be merged ..into a different thread .

You're making an assumption that they're prioritising the black boxes over saveable people.

I think within half an hour to an hour they knew there were no survivors.

This is a recovery operation, and retrieving the black box is part of that recovery, as it is for every air disaster.
