I think it is the most likely scenario. Sepsis was the cause of death, but the infection leading to sepsis was caused by a failed soap abortion.

The use of dirty instruments, infection to the soft tissue, and damage to the uterus and cervix can all cause septicemia. It can even cause gangrene in the uterine tissue.

Glycerin soap and anything under the kitchen sink were used in this type of abortion...it was one of the cheaper back alley or do-it-yourself options rather than finding a "sympathetic" gynecologist to preform a C&D under the guise of a miscarriage which would be more pricey.

Was there ever a follow up with her maternal DNA matches? Did the family always reside in the Virginia/North Carolina area? If so, searching year books may help...but seems like a very long, time consuming shot.

I go with you...the failed soap abortion started it all up.....leading to sepsis, blood cloths, maybe a shock...the poor girl.

Yes, many questions about the DNA too here.....

I wonder how long it would take to die from something like this? Did she die immediately during the "procedure"? Was she at home recovering and died then dumped by family or a boyfriend? Or did she do this on her own then left on the roadside by whoever found her and didn't want to be associated or accused?

I can't imagine the pain she felt.

Depending on cause and how long she was dealing with whatever (abortion or what have you) and the severity of her sepsis, it could have been hours for her to die, she would hve passed out unconscious and then died. As the infection shuts down more and more organs. I am not sure if it is painful I am sure in beginning stages it is but as to pain once unconcious I do not know. Hope it was quick and as painless as possible whatever happened. :/

I got sepsis from a bad kidney infection once. I was working two jobs and legitimately did not have time to go to the doctor so I used Azo and cranberry juice. I passed out at work and they took me to the hospital. They said I was lucky and a few more hours to a day it would have been fatal.

ETA: I don't remember pain other than the flank pain from the kidney infection. Maybe a little chest pain. I just got really sluggish, dizzy and confused and then passed out the next afternoon.

I had symptoms for a few weeks and started vomiting a few days before the dizziness and confusion. I was in the ICU almost 4 days and then was on IV antibiotics in the hospital for another week. They thought I would need dialysis or maybe they did do dialysis (details are super fuzzy) and then I came home with picc line for fluids and more antibiotics.

Oh my...it's sad to think she could have suffered for hours+ with no access to proper medical care :(

Wow, from a kidney infection?? That sounds like an awful experience, glad you are ok!

Yeah it is not necessarily immediate like another person said it could take weeks or hours depending on severity of infection. And what caused it etc. People really need to treat infections and things as soon as possible. :/

What if it was a miscarriage? And it wasn't complete and she didn't see a doctor for a d/c?

Glad you made it! It's very dangerous all together...

That's definitely possible, but why dump her body if there was no crime involved?

You are right...that's why an illegal soap abortion (finding soap at the autopsy) is the most logical explanation....

I would like to believe if someone died while I was with them that I could call 911 tell the cops the truth and that be it but it scares the hell out of me how facts can be distorted. I would seriously confess to anything just to end an interrogation. I don't do well with confrontation or under pressure.
I'd probably do something dumb like leave the body, go to a pay phone and call 911 and then it'd be traced to me and I'd be charged with obstruction or something and spend years in prison then die in prison because I pissed someone off and they shanked me all because someone had like a heart attack and died near me.

Oh my! lol. Well I would like to imagine if she did died from complications of a miscarriage and some paranoid person didn't want to call 911, they would have at least had the dignity to dress her and not leave her naked in a dirty laundry bag on the side of the road :/

As far as I know there are no updates on what I linked with family matches

I agree that a failed abortion is the most likely scenario

I never saw any updates to the ancestral DNA matches. From what I could tell, investigators never revealed the type or closeness of the relationships, and when they contacted they families, they didn't know who she was. It's possible Miss X was given up for adoption, unknown to the families contacted, and the bio-mother had since passed on or chose not to "out" herself.
That's the one thing about using ancestral DNA to identify UIDs that concerns me-it may affect the privacy of someone who gave a child up for adoption, who may not want to be contacted because they never told their family or because they don't want to relive the past.

That's a very good point, unfortunately.

It's possible that Doe's mother was the one that was adopted.
My brother was put for adoption in the late 50's, I also give help for anyone looking; it's rare that family doesn't want contact

It may be rare, but people's privacy should still should be respected. If the biological parents/mother had good reason for giving the child up (rape or incest, for example) they may want the past to stay in the past. Besides, if the child was given up without the rest of the family knowing, they won't know who the adoptee is, anyway. It may show a biological relationship, but that's it, like it did for Miss X.

I have a general question about UIDs.

Can a skeleton reveal if a person was over weight or not?
