Hey all,

I don't know much about this case which is why I am posting it here, I am hoping that someone is able to link me to more information about what happened to the family and if it was ever ruled out that John wasn't America's Unknown Child.

The husband and father, Harold was the only one left. I found out about this family through reading the archives on America's Unknown Child dot net and I can't seem to find any information on the missing family when I try googling it. I was hoping someone would be able to link me to some more information on when exactly they went missing.

Slain Boy One of Missing Family?
By JAMES CARTIN and HAROLD HADLEY
Homicide detectives have a fresh and exciting interest today in the case of the murdered boy of Fox Chase. A father came to police with a story that there is a chance the dead boy is his long-missing son.
Harold Sanders, 31, of Dover, Del., had a son who was fair, thin, about the age of the child found battered to death in a cardboard box at Verree and Susquehanna rds. Last February.
The father thus revived a search for his missing family-wife, two daughters, and a son. The father learned only recently about the murder, that the Fox Chase boy had not been identified.
Homicide Lieutenant David Brown said, "Even if it was not the Sanders boy, we are working on the strangest disappearance case in Philadelphia police records."
Missing without a trace are Mrs. Jean Sanders, 32, her daughters, Bonnie, 9, and Carol, 7, and son, John, more than 4, if still alive.
The boy found in the box was believed to be between 4 and 8 years old. Physicians said his exact age could not be determined. The boy was thin, even undernourished, when he was slain.
Sanders told police that his son was "that sort of child."
"John was a thin child" said the father. "He had an organic ailment. No matter how much nourishing food he ate, he always appeared undernourished."
Jean, Bonnie, Carol and John Sanders went missing in the 1950s'.

I found this. It's the only article I could find referencing it.

It was 1954, it probably wasn't super easy to get a divorce, or it was frowned upon. If she felt she and the kids needed to get out of that situation for whatever reason, I could see her maybe just leaving.

I found a Jean M Sanders who divorced a Harold C Sanders in Florida on family search, but it says the marriage and divorce happened in 1944. But, perusing other Florida divorce records from that time period, they all have funky dates. Maybe she moved to Florida and filed for divorce there? If the marriage date is correct, 1944, and they disappeared in 1954, that would work out with the oldest kid being 9. Assuming she got pregnant shortly after the marriage.

I'm still looking for obits or something for her or the kids.

That's true, without any further information we don't know what she told him or under what circumstances she left.

Wait, so did the divorce and marriage happen in the same year? 1944? If so might not be linked.

I just find it bizarre there is absolutely no information on them.

If Sanders is from Dover, Delaware then I'm going to start by looking for the missing person's report with the Delaware PD to see if they can find anything that might help with dates, as the article I originally posted stated they went missing in the 1950s' but doesn't specify a year.

Thanks all for your thoughts and theories on this.

I have been Wondering why he was thinking this particular boy from Philadelphia, did they have links there? DNA wasn’t used then sadly. Well Philadelphia is mentioned here.

All these paper articles are amazing, thank you!

So, she divorces him, then goes missing not long after.

I'm still trying to find a specific date, I am really hoping she decided to take off, change her name and her kids name and start over.

I have been trying to find any marriage or children’s birth records, Jeans maiden name, nothing...
Spent some time but all rabbit holes, anyone have any ideas?

Kids records in school ? Searching communities where he served or went to school ? Dang that's a tough one ! Let me see what I can do, not really sure.....

Does anyone have a paid subscription to Ancestry? Online search of Jean Sanders sent me to a message board of Ross/Sanders. Someone was asking about her aunt Betty Jean Ross who married Sanders in either IA or MO, & went missing around 54. Doesn't say where missing from. I dont think this could be a coincidence with same facts, but my membership has expired so I cant message her! Could be a good place to start.

I found Betty Joanne Ross married David G Sanders in MO 1956. Betty Joanne died 2009 Texas. But, still good start... and I'll keep looking around.
