Decorah, IA - Bald Eagle Cam: Watch the babies! #2

  • #481
Now they're alone. With that owl on the prowl, this is extra scary.

What I try to remember is that these two have successfully raised 8 other babies so that indicates to me that they are very good at being parents. I don't think an owl will stand a chance.

It looks like the babies grew a couple of inches just since yesterday.

I'll go ahead and admit it - my name is adrienne37 and I'm addicted to the Decorah eagles!!

Momma and Daddy Eagle are both on the nest now.

A WONDERFUL article about the man behind the camera, his passion is falcons :)

http://thegazette.com/2011/04/13/eagle-cam-latest-success-for-bird-preservationist/

In a nutshell, when live falcons were extremely rare, Anderson figured out how to “make” them for the restoration effort, using artificial insemination to breed captive females at his acreage near Decorah.

Anderson’s chicks, released at nest boxes attached to bridges and power plant smokestacks, have produced 1,500 progeny — a decisive factor in the birds’ removal from the endangered species list.

I have been trying to use how far the mandible extends under the eye theory, it seems to me we could have three little boys. Anything on chat about the sex of the chicks?

  • #488
This is incorrect information, Chat mods at ustream said we would be able to see them fledge. That article is wrong.

I hope it's wrong. It just doesn't make sense that they would go off-camera so it didn't interfere. I don't get how the camera would interfere??

Both mom and dad were sitting on the edge of a branch for awhile with babies all alone in the nest. The camera was on mom and dad. Now they're getting fed again with a closeup of the squirrel and the stringy mean. Yuck!

Looks like Mom is creating shade for them with her wing. She's amazing!

Oops, looks like Dad. How could I miss his fierce guyliner! He should be on People's top 10 most beautiful!

Bob Anderson is amazing too!

This really scares me. I will be devastated if something happens to any of these eagles.

Did we have another scare last night. I seen the previous one.

It was so amazing to watch the video from the previous night's scare. Never knew eagels made those sounds. It is so dark at night and the eagles don't see well at night. I am guessing their hearing and scense/scent is quite well.

Those eagles are bad. I wouldn't want to be what ever is jacking with them if they get ahold of them.

OMG, I have been away for the last day or so and haven't checked on the eaglets since day before yesterday. I rushed home all in a panic because my sister told my kids that one of the babies had died!!!

I have read the last three pages of thread, caught up on the owl attacks etc but I see nothing about one of our babies being dead.

Someone tell me my sister had it wrong. Please? I can't bring myself to look until I know what I will see.

whew, I could shoot my sister! I just looked at the nest and they are all still there and all still breathing.

I have half a mind to call her and give her what for!

  • #495
No babies are dead, all are very much alive and well!!!

  • #496
feeding time again.

  • #497
I honestly can't believe how quickly they are growing.

  • #498
I know, they have gotten so big so fast.

I am still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that 10-12 weeks after hatch they will be almost as large as parents. That is just mind boggling.
