Decorah, IA - Bald Eagle Cam: Watch the babies! #2

  • #861
Yea, it appears that it is the mama from the nest that they just banded last week. I watched them for a couple of days before they were banded. I'm so sad to hear this but I am thankful that it wasn't our mama as well.

RIP mama eagle :rose:

I watched the banding too. This is very sad. I think the Eagles had up to 3 nests in the botanical gardens and had been together for several years. :(

I just read that the Daddy came back to the nest to feed the Eaglets. At least some good news while my tears are streaming....
I also watched Mom give her last feeding this morning. It was actually the first time I saw a feeding as I don't watch their nest like I do our Royal Family.

I'll worry myself to death now every time mama or daddy leaves our babies behind but at least thank heavens there isn't an airport close by although I know a million other things could happen.

I'm so glad to hear he is back at the nest. I'm sorry Sterling. It was nice that you got that last shot of her though.

So so so so sad!!!! My heart hurts :( Do eagles mate for life? I'm wondering if Dad will now just be alone for the rest of his life.

They do mate for life but our Decorah dad lost his first mate and then found his current one so I'm sure dad won't be lonely forever.

Ok the thank you button is just not enough. I feel better now knowing that so thank you for the reply :)

Somewhere I was reading, sorry can't remember where, was talking about another pair of eagles that lost the mother and another female took up with the father and ended up raising the eaglets that he and the mother had. Amazing how it all works out.

I can't tell if the Dad is there or not as it is dark and the nest isn't centered in the pic. This is just so sad. What are the odds of this happening to this Mama?

Does anyone know how much time is left before they start flying?

I guess this is mom. I just think it's awesome how she can stick her head into her feathers like that.

I am also deeply saddened to hear about the other eagle Mom!!! What is wrong with me that I can sit here reading about horrible crimes every night, and here I sit crying my eyes out over an eagle I have never seen before. The Decorah eagles have given me hope of "life"...... they seem to represent all that is good about life. From what I have learned, eagles DO mate for life and they live to be about 30 years old. If one of them dies, the other one will find a new mate. Watching our Decorah eagles, and how closely they have worked together has convinced me that they DO FEEL something beyond basic instincts! I will never forget some of the pictures with the nest covered in snow and BOTH parents sitting side by side, close together, so that their babies were warm and protected. That is the only time I have seen them sitting like that. I have pictures of it, and they will inspire me to the day I die. So very, very, sad for the Norfolk family of eagles. If I ever get to Heaven, I want to meet that Mom.... and many, many, other wonderful Mom and Dad's that have made it there.

Amen Raeanne, Last night about 4 to 5am there it was snowing way up high in that cottonwood tree. I checked the weather in Decorah and it was only for rain. So I guess it was colder up in the top of the tree. I saw the rain and snow mixed at first falling right in front of the camera and then the nest became gradually white. I think she was the one sitting on the nest. xox

They have about a month to go before flying. They said he wasn't on the next tonight, but close by as always. He did bring in fish tonight and I hope he brings them breakfast tomorrow.

I feel the same way Reannan. I was so emotional tonight that the slightest thing would make me cry. Maybe it's our emotional outlet for all the times people have hurt us during our lifetime. I NEVER cry. But darned those birds, they make me cry a river.

I just read about the norfolk eagle mom being hit by a plane and am in tears like I can't remember crying in a long time. My heart is broken. :(

Dear God, Please look over these little motherless eaglets, who are Your divine creation, and help them to survive. Give the eagle daddy the strength and savvy to provide for them and see them through til they learn to fly. And please continue to watch over our Decorah eagles who have faced so much adversity with this terrible weather. Amen.

Our little eaglets have been active this morning...picking at the nest, Sassy and Wobbles biting at each other, lol! Papa brought a huge stick to the nest and Mama helped him lift it over the eaglets heads. It was so cute! The eaglets talons are really growing!

Gonna log off now and finish my cry and say a little prayer for all of God's creatures.

We have these stupid ads interrupting our coverage on Ustream now. I guess they figured since so many people were watching the cam, they may as well make money off of it (not RRP). It's a tad bit aggravating.
