Decorah, IA - Bald Eagle Cam: Watch the babies! #2

  • #1,001
Thanks to everyone for the links to all of the other great sites with video and information about this inspirational wildlife! A great, and uplifting change from True Crime stories. I watch our Decorah Eagle family every morning as I have coffee. This morning, I was watching, and all three were taking turns literally hopping up and down and catching "air time" with their wings!!! It was SO cute!!! I had a long phone call at work, so I logged on while answering stupid questions on the phone, and probably startled my caller by giggling because one of the eaglets was literally hopping up and down as if he/she was trying to see how high they could get. One of the last hops, was so good, and the wings worked so well, the eaglet literally lifted off of the ground, and you could only see his talons for a few seconds before he decended. It was hysterical! They were really hot for most of the day, so I hope they get a good night's sleep and have a cooler day tomorrow to practice their "hopping/flying" in the nest. It certainly isn't going to be long before they are airborne.

Great video posted from this morning (6/8/2011) when breakfast was served! The Eaglets are almost grown, and will be "branching" any day now. That means they will be flying from the nest to a tree branch and then back to the nest. They are expected to actually "fledge" - fly from the nest - sometime towards June 25th..... They still amaze me, in terms of how they work together, and how they are a "family". People could learn a lot from these amazing eagles!!!

Thanks so much for posting that video, I too watch early in the morning but have missed the feedings. Every day I am amazed with these parents teaching methods and sit here and laugh out loud watching the young ones practice flying. Won't be long now when one is ready.

Here is one of the highlights from this morning! We almost had an eaglet branching!!! It was really more of a "trunking", but he/she DID fly to the large tree trunk that is in the lower right corner of the video, and his/her talons held on for a brief second. It might have looked like the eaglet sort of accidentally hopped up there and back down, but I am going to imagine it was intentional, and the first baby wing-flap towards soaring high into the sky! :woohoo:

We have branching!!

E-1 and E-3 are out on the limb where the parents usually sit!

E-2 can't seem to muster up the courage yet

whole family out there now:woohoo:

whole family out there now:woohoo:

I was actually watching when the last one left the nest. It was all alone and seemed to be crying and decided to go for it. Will they go back to the nest ever again? They are not use to perching on a limb and eating...

What a thrill this has been for me.

I'm so sorry I missed the branching, but was excited to see our babies growing up. Does anyone know how they feed while on the branch?

I think they go back to the nest for the fish drop-off!

More good news! E-3 has left the building!

Bob saw him fly off the nest about 10:00 am and return to the nest tree!

Not sure where he is right now, but how cool is that?

Actually most recent rports are that Bob did not see him go, but saw his return.

I haven't been able to watch as closely as I used too but I've tried to catch the latest on the RRP FB page so I was so excited to know that one of them took their first flight. I wish I had the camera on so I could have caught it. I'm sad because our babies have grown up too fast.

I don't face book so I am glad when posters share - thanks. I checked in several times yesterday and noticed one was AWOL and assumed it was the bravest one who had been going to other brances. We will have to depend on Bob's reports since the camera can't be everywhere. This is certainly something that reminds me, they are doing what they are supposed to do and with the help of good parenting - they are.

I never would have known about the Decorah eagles if I had not seen this thread one day while scrolling down the forums page. Thanks to Peeples and all of you who have kept this going. If it had not been for you all I would never have had the joy of seeing this precious family grow up and take to the air!
