Depositions Cancelled In Casey Case

  • #81
What I think I believe I remember hearing (and we all know how *that* goes!) is that the $22,000 was spent on her travel and related expenses. The remainder of the $70,000 her clinic contributed (which would be $48,000) went for the computers and research.

I can see she must have paid Mort Smith probably major bucks, but the computers are still somewhere. To whom do they belong now? Why can't they be sold off and the funds returned?

It was my understanding that $22,500 was a "donation" to the budget of what Lyon calls "her Clinic." And, that she was in control of that budget, soliciting donations through fund raising efforts and also approving all expenditures from that budget. This case is not ideal to use for teaching purposes, and IMO, Lyon was very negligant in her educational and fiscal/financial duties.

Do they buy a new computer for each big case? Sounds odd..........

I think she bought them for her students/classroom! MOO

Awwww I want a new laptop TOO!!

20k is still a lot of money for computers and research. Is part of that 20K her Income? or was that 20k supposed to be used toward PI work necessities like computers and gas and whatever she would need to do her job?

And may I ask another newbie question... I was on Matleave for a year and I'm just piecing a few things back together here.. IE ICA = Incarcerated KC But what is JAC?

Hope you are enjoying the fruit of your labor SS! - you didn't really miss anything critical; this case has been dragging for some time now.

I, too, am of the impression that AL may not have been directly reimbursed for her activities on the case. IIRC, she mentioned something at the first JAC (Justice Administrative Commission, tasked with reviewing, among other things, the financials in indigency cases) that she was using resources in her non-profit foundation at DePaul University to contribute and intimated this case was already using up more than its share and depriving others of possible help. I think she seemed a little huffy at the time because the way things were worded, it didn't look as if people understood she was basically doing this pro-bono for the most part. When asked, she put a dollar amount on the time spent (including her adminstrative and research assistants, etc) that should have been invoiced but did not actually say she had received the money. I don't recall hearing her mention an actual donation of $20K either, but that may just be my memory. Alternately, she seemed to feel it a bit ridiculous that the time donated by her and her foundation should be factored as going solely to ICA because they were trying to handle other DP cases as well. IIRC, she was also using her foundation resources to bring in the mitigation expert that the defense still continues to use.

I can only imagine how much time (and money) was actually spent by both AL and LKB during the year they were both working on this. For two attorneys that were recruited for their specific expertise (forensics and DP mitigation), it seems to me they spent an enormous amount of time doing other things (including being present for routine depositions of people like AH and AL). I imagine JB was picking up the phone every five minutes asking them 101 law questions. They both flew in and were present at many motion hearings. LKB, at the same JAC hearing, seemed incensed that the court had the impression she had been reimbursed for any expenses at all. I think both women were told they would be reimbursed initially and then it never materialized. I can only imagine how they felt when they realized that $350K had been collected and there was very little work product to show for it, other than their own contributions.

Whatever we personally feel about how reasonable (or not) these expenditures are, we should probably weigh in with our legal experts here to see if they are out of line or simply normal for similar capital cases.

LOL - make it easy on yourself! Inmate Casey Anthony.....
We started referring to her like that to show our lack of respect for her - and she is an inmate, with no special star status.

Why does it cost so much to defend an "innocent" person? The truth is what it is. There is no evidence because you are innocent? I just think it's very telling how much they are having to spend to defend their innocent client. This is the first case I've ever followed but it seems like the defense is trying to make a case instead of defend a case. I guess I just never really knew how much it cost to defend yourself-especially if you are innocent. (Innocent said sarcastically).

Also wondering why cancelled and not postponed? I think JB is definitely going to ask for more time on Friday. He may blame it on changes in attorneys. imo
My guess is they ran out of money and won't reschedule until they are sure of getting more money.

computers???
AZ...anyone..Can Baez and Lyon use the money to pay for such things as computers for ???themselves or staff.
:waitasec: Baez start coming to court with an Apple Ipad, keyboard...
I don't think I want to hear that the money went into purchasing upgraded computers...
There are legal research databank companies like Westlaw and Lexis for legal research. However, they cost money and are very expensive. So, I can see using up $20,000 in mostly legal research very quickly in this case.

I love this question. The logic is so pure. I wish it was our reality.

Although a lot of people say our justice system is a search for the truth, it really isn't. Our justice system is a socially recognized system for disposing of conflicts. I did not say we resolve conflicts by finding the truth. If we can find the truth then that is part of the resolution process. If we can't, then we resolve it anyway and dispose of the case. Don't forget that. It is all about finding a disposition for conflicts.

Oh I agree. I'm sure cases like this are not what the clinic is really for - and they could have genuinely helped 5-10 people with what they flushed down the toilet for Casey.

I sincerely doubt people donating money to the clinic thought they'd be funding Andrea Lyon's book tour and fame-seeking. There are people who need real help in the legal system who are in Lyon's home state, Casey has had more than enough freebies.

Lyon is terribly unethical in my opinion. If you donate to a homeless shelter, for example, would you feel ok to learn that instead of feeding 100 in-state people, someone hosted a luxurious out of state banquet for only 10? Hope that makes sense. I am just so cynical over this and I wish Lyon could be disbarred for it.

I felt the same way at the last hearing - I remember New York, Tennessee, Texas, one of the Carolinas, Denver CO,and Holland being brought up. All this when the person who last saw Caylee has not told the truth about what happened.

I hope this is the appropriate thread for my question/comment! ;)

Does anyone know if Casey's lawyers actually followed through on their scheduled deposition of FBI Special Agent Nick Savage???
I can't find any confirmation per se, and my DH is not about to get on the phone to help seek out any answers for me today! ((pout-pout-pout))
I know it would take DH approximately three phonecalls, but NOOOOOOOPE....he's not playing. :( Waaaa. Boooo!

P.S. I hope you know I am laughing at my own obsession about this case.
Please take my comments as cheeky self-deprication, but I really am curious about this depo. Knowing Special Agent's Savage's reputation (and I have never met the man personally)----he is not about to be "intimidated" by any of the Baez and Cheney BullCaCa here. Savage is firm in his beliefs about Casey and he CARES about Justice for Caylee!!!!!! :blowkiss:
