No the preview was not of the joker shooting a crowd. It was for a movie called Gangster Squad. two men open fire in a movie theater on the crowd

PSA: Just want to take a moment to say the discussion in here has been lively and interesting.
There just has not been any sleuthing family members or posting questionable sites, bad FB linking or any of the things that we usually see with high profile,busy cases like this that can really create problems. The idea exchange has been enlightening and educational.

I believe when they forensically search his computer he may have written some kind of manifesto. I think he wants it known why he did this, and in his mind, whether he is an extremist of some kind or mental.... he thinks these horrific acts were justified.
He had a good reason for not wanting to kill himself. Does he see himself as some kind of martyr I wonder?

There was no central registry, depository, or linkage system in place to report or compile any of this. Well actually there are parts and pieces of one with many noticeable deficiencies. Anyone could report suspicions to the FBI or homeland security and leave it up to them. The gun side has rules and regulations administered by lawmakers and individual people who had some suspicions. There were enough hints that someone different in the same situation may have gone a little further into checking on him, reporting on him, and may have triggered some investigation. The signs were there as said, people were suspicious as noted by the university profs statement, he first thought of Holmes.
We evolve as a country through experience. Maybe we can't deal with this sort of thing yet but maybe we can learn from it all how to for next time. Laws can change, investgative bodies can learn, computer systems can be modified to better collect, catch and collate information. (if we know what we are looking for)
In this case there were some pretty high powered eyes on him. He was in the middle of a high level psych class, his professors supposedly some of the best in the business. His grades plumetting, from top of the heap to dropping out in a very short period of time. His courses included studies on abberrant behaviour.
The mentorship program is an explorable and demonstrable connection. Very early a mentor is noted in his first temporal illusion discussion. Will have to go back for the link but it is in a video showing the cover of a mentorship.

He had recently withdrawn from the competitive graduate program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado Denver, where he was one of six pre-thesis Ph.D. students at its Neuroscience Program to be funded by a prestigious grant from the National Institutes of Health. The program of 35 students is dedicated to training outstanding neuroscientists and academicians who will make significant contributions to neurobiology, the university said in a statement.
In the first year of the five- to seven-year program, students take classes and complete three, three-month research rotations in the labs of different professors.
Professors who worked with him either did not return calls or declined to comment, saying police and university officials had told them not to speak to the media.
At one point in the year, Holmes was engaged in research about RNA and was to present a paper May 8 about RNA Biomarkers, according to a class schedule. It was unclear if he presented the paper.
Holmes recently took an intense, three-part oral exam that marks the end of the first year. Those who do well continue with their studies and shift to full-time research, while those who don’t do well meet with advisers and discuss their options, including retaking the exam.

I thought I read somewhere, he/mother decided it may be best if he went on for his Ph.D. since he couldn't find a job in field
Now, he didn't do well on his one year evaluation...
Another setback....life wasn't working out as planned.....he was smart....why was he being treated this way......
He would show us how smart he was.....he would show us his anger........
Just ask the survivors how angry he was.......
Sidenote....scene is previous Batman movie there was a scene where the Joker had on a red wig...

There's only a few got invited to spend a weekend at AZ campus and he's one of them
