EDIT: And come to think of it...it's quite obvious you care about your opinion very much. Based on your signature you feel the need to point out that your statements are your opinion only. Why? Doesn't that go without saying?

As others have pointed out, we were asked to do this. Sorry my signature seems to bother you so much.

Whoops, double post.

I'm glad you're offended. I'm not glad because I'm mean spirited or I'm doing it to hurt anyone. Everyone should be offended at the way our country is currently. Stand up and question your government, rather than question those who aren't afraid to speak up against it.

I'm offended because you're being rude. You can have your opinion, and I can have mine, but to say that a poster hasn't thought things through (because they don't agree with you), or that the DC's are more American than the poster, is not right.

Do you think arguing with us will change our minds? Do you think saying we are un-American or not thinking clearly will make us change our minds? This is a forum, and we all have different ideas, however, trying to bully posters into thinking like you do or to go along with your reasoning isn't why most of us post here.

And just because YOU think everyone should be offended at the way our country is currently, doesn't mean I believe that. Face it, not everyone agrees with you. I don't. But...I sure am not going to try and change your mind. So think what you want...but do not say we are un-American (or whatever you said), or we aren't thinking things through.

Because that's what I think of them. You can think they are "smart" for doing what they did, I just think it was a dumb move, and they did pay the price for speaking their minds.

We own our own business, and I can tell you if we voiced our political opinions to our customers, we'd probably lose half of them. Not a smart business move. Nor is it my job to voice my political opinions to our customers. They have minds of their own...they don't need me telling them how to think.

I think there is a time and place for everything, and I think the Dumb Chicks should stick to singing. I am sick to death of these types of people spouting their political views. I somehow doubt Natalie would have such a big mouth if she was a WalMart greeter...money sure does make these people think their opinion needs to be known by everyone.
I think that they INITIALLY paid the price for speaking their minds, but the amount of support they have received in the aftermath seems to trump the amount of opposition they got. I think the fact that they got 6 Grammys and were very well received speaks to that.

I understand what you say about how talking about your political opinions would hurt your business. I'm sure it would--regardless of what those opinions are. I don't think giving ones political opinion is akin to telling someone else how to think, though. But I agree with you that it's a bad business move, period.

As far as Natalie not having such a big mouth if she were a Wal-Mart greeter....I don't know about that. She doesn't strike me as a shrinking violet--as evidenced by her not being afraid to say how she feels. I think she would probably voice her opinion just as much, only we wouldn't know about and it wouldn't be heard on every radio and tv station.

When you say you are "sick to death of these types of people spouting their political views"---do you mean that you believe it's okay for "other types" of people to do so, just not entertainers? I'm not trying to rip your post apart at all, I just don't understand what you mean. Or do you mean that NOBODY should spout off their political views? The way I look at it is this: Entertainers have opinions and views just like everyone else does. The fact that these people are well known shouldn't mean they should be afraid of saying or standing up for what they believe in. If it ends up biting them in the butt, well then it's a chance they take. If it offends someone then they have every right to stop buying their music or watching their movies or whatever. But entertainers don't have any less right to share their opinion than someone who is less well-known than them. Becoming "famous" and in the public eye doesn't mean they have to hide their viewpoints. I personally like the fact that Natalie wasn't afraid to say how she felt. I have lost a very dear family friend to my family (I've known him my entire life) to the senseless war in Iraq over 8 months ago, and I am still asking "why". What the hell for??? He left behind a young wife and 2 beautiful babies. Why. Why. Why. And his wife and babies are asking the same. The thing about war is that it doesn't determine who is right, but only who is left. But I digress, I don't want to get into that right now because it's just too hard....

I respect your opinion and your right to voice it. Just as I respect Natalies opinion and her right to voice it. Just as I hope my opinion is respected and my right to voice it.

I long for a day where things like this won't be an issue anymore.

luvbeaches,

While you and I don't see eye-to-eye on the Dixie Chicks, we definitely see eye-to-eye on everything you have expressed in this terrific post! ;)

Hear! Hear! for the freedoms we have in the United States of America - including Freedom of Speech and the right to speak our mind in public if we have an opinion.

Dixie Chicks: What - this doesn't have to be a monopoly now; your album was good but we could have spread the joy among Corinne Bailey Ray and James Blunt IMO.

Do I smell a "political decision"?

Perhaps. But the Grammy voters are also notoriously inclined to give awards to acts they already know.

Well put. And I would add that on the contrary to what some posters have said here, having a bigger audience brings with it a bigger responsibility to speak up.

I agree with you. The DC and other entertainers have every right to speak their minds to their friends and family. IMO, they have no right to use a national forum afforded to them solely because they are entertainers for their own personal agenda. That's why I am appalled.

I also respect the Office of the Presidency, no matter who is in office. I do think that Bill and Hillary Clinton have done many illegal things and then lied afterwards. However, I have never wished them either ill will or ill harm. I have never called either dumb, stupid, idiotic, Nazis or whatever. I think that it is a reflection on those that resort to personal attacks such as these.

Because DC and other celebrities have chosen to pretend that they are political experts and use public forums to spew their venue, I have chosen to react in the only way that I can to show my disapproval. I hit them in the pocketbook. I don't buy the DC's or Barbra Streisand's CD's as I don't pay to watch any movie of the likes of George Clooney, Tim Robinson, Ben Affleck, Susan Serandon (sp?), etc., etc.

I realize that these people are talented in their fields of expertise. That's where their efforts should be focused. I and many others are not interested in their political views.
And therein lies the problem.

Stand by your man right ;)

I agree. Plus James Blunt's song was so overplayed and extremely repetitive. The guy even admits he wrote it in 5 minutes. Corrine is amazing - I predict big things for her, but I didn't think she would be recognized this year.

Exactly. One never hears complaints when a performer sings "God Bless the USA" or "Okie from Muskogie," yet these numbers are every bit as political as anything the DCX say or sing.

And anyway, what are singers supposed to sing about? Puppy love and nothing else?

In fact, everything is political. If an artist isn't calling for change, s/he is supporting the status quo.

Exactly. A lot of very good art -- movies, songs, plays, paintings -- are political statements.

Well, thank you. And you are right, we don't always see eye-to-eye on things, but even though we disagree at times, your comments are always directed at an issue, not the other poster. And there have been times after reading your posts (and others) that I have had a change of heart about certain issues.

First of all...I am so sorry for your loss and for the loved ones this young man left behind.

Yes, these celebrities are certainly entitled to their own opinions, and they certainly are entitled to voice them. I am just sick of hearing them. I don't go to see my doctor to get a lecture on what's right in this country and what's wrong, nor do I expect our customers to listen to what my political ideas are concerning the state of things today in our country.

I am just sick of the DC's at this point. And Tom Cruise, and all the other Hollywood celebs who are spouting off about one thing or another.

They sure can do this...but I am just sick of it. From Jane Fonda, to Barbra Streisand...to the DC's...and Tom Cruise. Enough already.

But I do agree...I also long for the day when this won't be an issue anymore.

Thank you for the kind words about my friend. It's still like it's just a nightmare.

I can appreciate your point of view---I'm certainly sick of Tom Cruise also  LOL....;)

Sometimes it is hard for all of the passionate people on Websleuths not to take things personally! But usually we do a really good job of keeping a civil tongue in our heads, I think.

I always appreciate what you add to this board and am deeply respectful of your opinions even when they differ from my own. Maybe it's because we both love beaches!:)

(Not really, of course. But this is getting sickening.
