On their site, DDP states they typically initiate a case at the request of LE (not always, but usually). Also, in a FB post on 9/18 they mentioned they try to stay clear of cases that other similar agencies are already devoting resources to.
I've noticed that there's virtually no cases from Virginia, but that may be due to Parabon Nanolabs being based in Reston, Virginia, near DC

Joan has updated the spreadsheet. Next update is on Friday, October 30th. I am wondering why Mecklenburg John Doe 2008 (North Carolina) is no longer being updated. Are they waiting for a new refined kit?

Thank you, Joan, you are amazing! You are doing such a great job. I imagine you are very busy now preparing for tomorrow's press conference. I am looking forward to hear the announcement tomorrow.

Press conference for Park County John Doe happening in an hour (10am MDT) on the Park County Coroners facebook page!

Park County John Doe has been identified as Anthony John Armbrust III.

Also interesting tidbit, according to them they've identified over 45 Does, I believe the last time they announced they said it was 40.

From the press conference on the Park County Coroners Office facebook page, Park County John Doe, or Anthony John Armbrust (age 45) died in what is believed to have been a suicide pact with his wife at the time, Renee. He was suffering from what he called a terminal illness -- emphysema. He was the leader/guru of a metaphysical church in San Diego, CA and had sent a letter to the church asking them to pack up some belongings and a puppy they would find in his new Colorado apartment. They said that he had wanted to be "taken by God" in the Colorado mountains. Renee has not been found and is presumed to have committed suicide with him.

Wow, this is an incredible story. Were Anthony and Rene reported missing? It is a very interesting story, there are so many strange things about it.

Cold Case Solved: Anthony John Armbrust, III, Found Dead In 1974, Wife Still Missing
''FAIRPLAY, Colo. (CBS4) – The Park County Coroner’s Office and the DNA Doe Project announced the man found dead in a mountainous region outside of Grant, Colorado, in 1974 has been identified as Anthony John Armbrust, III. The coroner said Armbrust died from blunt force injuries and suffered multiple fractures when he fell or jumped from a plateau. Investigators believe he made a suicide pact with his wife — and she is still missing.''

Actually, that article is not correct and I watched part of the press conference back (where they point to a photo of Armbrust and Renee) to make sure & they describe a photo of Armbrust and Renee at 33:30. The following link contains the actual photo of Armbrust and Renee. Renee was only 25 when Armbrust died and looked very young: Man found dead in Colorado mountains in 1974 is identified

You can't really tell because the photo is clipped, but she is wearing a wedding ring.

The photo you posted is of Armbrust and his first wife, and there is another photo of him and his first wife and their daughter together. Unfortunately it seems a few news outlets got this wrong.

My aunt has a similar condition to emphysema, she had the tracheotomy done. I am wondering if back in 70ies emphysema was considering fatal, I think there were still some medicine which could help. It is such a tragic case, Rene was just 25 and Anthony was 45, very young as well.

Great solve. Very fortunate that the first cousin match was still alive...born in 1929.

But this was a shameful failure by the church to keep everything quiet, instead of notifying Colorado and California authorities and media back in 1974, or any subsequent year. That is quite a round trip trek from California to Golden, CO to pick up belongings and a dog. Imagine all the thousands and thousands of work and research that could have been prevented or lessened. There was no working theory on this case. That church info would have provided one. Someone would have pieced it together, either a detective in 1974 range or a subsequent sleuth. The church did not file a missing persons report either.

It was also very fortunate they were able to learn about the note, apartment and apparent suicide pact 46 years later. Otherwise they have a name and no working theory. There might even have been speculation that Renee killed John.

Kudos again to DNA Doe Project. One recommendation: Please make sure the volume is high enough on the pressers. The Facebook version is okay in that regard but the 9news version was ridiculously low. I've noted throughout these Doe press conferences and true crime press conferences that politicians are exponentially more aware than law enforcement that microphones need to be tight to the mouth and decibel level sufficient. There is at least a 50/1 ratio of too low to too high.

Great job, DDP. 800 hours of genealogical research, looks like a tough case. If I am not mistaken the coroner Kintz said that he was informed about Anthony Armbrust being a potential candidate for this John Doe only in September this year. Just a month from finding a candidate till the announcement being done, it’s fast.

It seems our friend and admin, Mr. Koppelman, has been busy! DNA Doe Project just uploaded an updated reconstruction of "Mr. X" from 1972 on their twitter:

It seems there will be another announcement soon. Berrien county Jane Doe (MI) was moved to Solved cases on the DDP spreadsheet.

Interesting! I hope it isn't a typo.
